Davidson Media Group (DMG) and its partner radio stations around the country recently held the 3rd annual Promesa y Esperanza (Promise and Hope) radiothon raising $533,201 in cash and pledges for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital(R). Held on Thursday, October 7 and Friday, October 8, the two-day radiothon was broadcasted in Charlotte and Durham, N.C., Kansas City, K.S., Louisville, K.Y., Minneapolis, Nashville, Tenn., New Orleans, Norfolk, Va., Philadelphia, Providence, R.I., Richmond, V.A. and Springfield, Mass.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20101027/DC89471)

Participating radio stations dedicated more than 30 hours of programming in support of St. Jude and encouraged Hispanic radio listeners to pledge $20 a month as an Angel de Esperanza (Angel of Hope). Listeners also heard survival stories from Hispanic children who are currently undergoing treatment at St. Jude, including four-year-old Alejandro who was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumor. At St. Jude, Alejandro has received chemotherapy and radiation treatments at no cost to his family.

Fundraisers like Promesa y Esperanza help ensure that no child is ever denied treatment at St. Jude because of a family's inability to pay. In fact, since opening in 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, has increased from 4 percent to 94 percent - thanks to research and treatment protocols developed at St. Jude.

"We are honored to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in its fight against childhood cancer and other deadly diseases for a third consecutive year. We appreciate the support of our Hispanic radio listeners across the country and we thank them for their generous donations," said Felix L. Perez, President and CEO of Davidson Media Group. The radio group owns 33 radio stations in 17 different markets throughout the United States.

"The Davidson Media Group and its listeners have clearly embraced the St. Jude mission of finding cures and saving children," said Richard C. Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude. "Through their unwavering support, they are helping to ensure St. Jude is able to continue giving hope to our patients and their families as they battle cancer and other deadly diseases."

In addition to administering medical care to patients at St. Jude, the hospital's International Outreach Program (IOP) shares its medical advancements with countries around the world. St. Jude has 20 official partner sites in 15 different countries around the world including Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Venezuela. Also, St. Jude trains thousands of international medical professionals through consultations, faculty visits to St. Jude and the Cure4Kids program.

Since its inception in 1997, Promesa y Esperanza has grown to be one of the most successful radio fundraising programs in the U.S. Hispanic market raising more than $25 million in pledges. Seventy five stations in more than 40 radio markets across the U.S. are committed to the program. For more information, visit www.promesayesperanza.org.
Cordova’s association with Childrens Hospital Los Angeles as president and chief operating officer began on April 25, 2005. He became president and CEO, and a member of the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Board of Trustees, on April 1, 2006.

Cordova launched into his healthcare career in 1973 working for the Department of Health Services for the County of Los Angeles. Through 1991, he held various roles as a leader for Los Angeles County, serving as administrator of General Hospital of Los Angeles County (LAC/USC Medical Center) and associate hospital administrator of operations at Olive View Medical Center.

He served as the CEO of San Francisco General Hospital from 1991–98 and was a founding member of the San Francisco Public Health Authority (1996-98), which created the Medi-Cal managed care organization for the city and county of San Francisco. He then served as President of the Southern California region of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals — a non-profit integrated health care system with revenues in excess of $20 billion and 30 hospitals in eight states, a health plan with more than eight million members and eight physician groups — until 2004.

He is currently chair of the board of the California Children’s Hospital Association (CCHA), and a Board Member of the Child Health Corporation of America (CHCA) and the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). He serves on the NACHRI Public Policy Committee.

Cordova is a founding member of the National Forum for Latino Healthcare Executives; past-chair of the Institute for Diversity in Health Management, a nonprofit organization that works closely with health care organizations and educators to expand leadership opportunities for ethnic minorities in health services management; and chair of the board of trustees of the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute of the School of Policy, Planning and Development at the University of Southern California.

Cordova was selected one of America’s “Top 100 Most Influential Hispanics” by Hispanic Business magazine in October 2005. He was named one of “The 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare magazine in August 2006. He also was named a Top-25 Minority Healthcare Executive by Modern Healthcare magazine in 2008 and again this year, the second consecutive time that Cordova was selected for this biennial honor.

He completed a PEW Fellowship at the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (1987), and he is a Fellow with the American College of Health Care Executives (FACHE).

With Mount Sinais recent take-over of the St. Vincents HIV Clinic in Greenwich Village, the underserved Latino HIV/AIDS population in the greater New York area is now under the auspices of one of the preeminent, multi-disciplinary hospitals in the nation and a pioneering institution in HIV/AIDS care and research since 1989. The take-over was completed in July and resulted in the seamless transition of 2,700 patients, a majority of which were Latino.

"Treating the Latino HIV/AIDS community presents unique challenges, and this transition was especially concerning for them," said Dr. Lugo, an Infectious Disease specialist at the new Mount Sinai HIV clinic. "Knowing that they are now benefiting from Mount Sinais world-class physicians and unparalleled research capabilities, weve been able to quickly calm fears and provide the sense of continuity that was desperately needed," concluded Dr. Lugo.

The addition of St. Vincents program to the successful HIV program already in place at Mount Sinais Upper East Side campus has made the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Health Program (MSCHP) one of the largest HIV programs in the country, with an anticipated 36,000 patient visits annually. It includes primary care and, infectious disease physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, and specialists in dermatology, gynecology, and adolescent care. There are also subspecialty programs for HIV patients in neurology, renal care, hepatitis C co-infection and cancer screening.

"Ive been a patient at the clinic for thirteen years and I can honestly say that we are a familia," said Ernie Alvarez, an HIV/AIDS patient and leader of the Mount Sinai Consumer Advisory Board, a patient advocacy group. "Through the transition, Mount Sinai embraced us and now, were an even a bigger, stronger family that is optimistic for the future," added Alvarez.

"The Latino population in the U.S. has always been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and today, approximately 20% of all new cases come from within that community," said Guillermo Chacon, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS. "HIV/AIDS is not only a physical disease but also, it is a mentally and emotionally challenging one and Mount Sinai is one of the best things that can happen for this community. We look forward to partnering with them to keep the HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment at the forefront of the national dialogue," added Chacon.

The Mount Sinai clinic is currently located in the same building as the former St. Vincents clinic, the OToole Building, is serving about 300 patients each week. The clinic offers assistance in Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese and has a staff of social workers who offer case management, substance abuse, and social work services. The new Mount Sinai clinic accepts the same insurance plans as the St. Vincents clinic did and provides patients with MetroCards for transportation.

About The Mount Sinai Medical Center
The Mount Sinai Medical Center encompasses both The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Established in 1968, Mount Sinai School of Medicine is one of few medical schools embedded in a hospital in the United States. It has more than 3,400 faculty in 32 departments and 15 institutes, and ranks among the top 20 medical schools both in National Institute of Health funding and by U.S. News & World Report. The school received the 2009 Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Association of America Medical Colleges.

The Mount Sinai Hospital, founded in 1852, is a 1,171 bed tertiary and quaternary-care teaching facility and one of the nations oldest, largest and most-respected voluntary hospitals. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital among the nations top 20 hospitals based on reputation, patient safety, and other patient-care factors. Nearly 60,000 people were treated a Mount Sinai as inpatients last year, and approximately 530,000 outpatient visits took place.
