David Archuleta on Top
David Archuleta, the first Hispanic contestant to make it as a finalist on American Idol, talks to PEOPLE en Espanol about his newfound fame, how he almost did not make it, and his plans for the future. “I’ve always imagined myself on stage,” says Archuleta, who at 17-years-old, placed second, after David Cook, on the hit reality show series.
Even after millions of votes and his “Archie” fan club, he still remains humble. “I thought nobody liked to hear me sing,” says Archuleta. However, his accomplishments are nothing short of a miracle. About a year and a half ago, Archuleta received medical treatment for paralysis in his vocal cords. “The doctor said there is somebody up there who wants him to sing because, medically speaking, he should not be able to,” says Archuleta’s father.
He’s now gearing up for the American Idols Live! Tour 2008 and will also start recording his first album as a solo artist. “I feel a connection when I hear other people singing. If I can accomplish that, it would make me feel so good,” says Archuleta. (Page 143)

The Coca-Cola Telenovela Club celebrated the ugliest novela in the prettiest city in America this weekend. Several fans of the popular novela, “La Fea Más Bella,” were treated to a weekend getaway to Miami Beach, compliments of the latest Coca-Cola Telenovela Club consumer promotion. Fans and their guests attended a red carpet, Hollywood-style party at the popular Tantra Restaurant and Lounge on South Beach, where they met and dined with telenovela legend Angélica María and her daughter Angélica Vale.
“Our fans are such an important part of our lives and we strive to pick projects, such as ‘La Fea Más Bella,’ that they will enjoy,” said María and Vale in a joint statement. “Our association with the Coca-Cola Telenovela Club allows us to meet our fans and let them know just how much we appreciate them.”
“The Coca-Cola Telenovela Club reaches consumers online through My Coke Rewards as well as through local retail and radio promotions. With this promotion consumers have the opportunity to win prizes and experiences they may have only dreamed of,” said Reinaldo Padua, assistant vice president, Hispanic Marketing, Coca-Cola North America.
This year, the Coca-Cola Telenovela Club and Dress for Success Miami celebrated the importance of inner beauty and outer appearance, which was pivotal to the storyline of “La Fea Más Bella”. Dress for Success Miami is a women’s program that trains and suits women in Miami-Dade County who are struggling to secure and retain employment. The Coca-Cola Company gave the organization a cash donation and actual wardrobe items from the novela to auction off at future fundraising events.
“In partnering with Dress for Success Miami, the Coca-Cola Telenovela Club aims to take ‘dream making’ to a new level by making the dreams of women needing assistance in obtaining work also come true. We couldn’t be happier to work with an organization that has touched so many lives,” said Padua.
Coca-Cola North America also revealed details of the next phase of the Telenovela Club consumer promotion. Scheduled to run from September 1 to October 31, it will celebrate the novela, “Destilando Amor”. Telenovela fans will be able to redeem points for prizes related to “Destilando Amor,” such as recipe booklets, memorabilia, a flat screen television and DVDs.
In addition, participants will have another chance to enter a sweepstakes to meet their favorite celebrities during a dream weekend in Miami next year. “

It’s a quintessential Hollywood moment: a star on a soundstage, the focal point of every person and every piece of equipment in the room. The star on this particular January day is Rosario Dawson, the 29-year-old actress who earned her cred as an Uzi-wielding prostitute in Sin City. She’s being filmed against a greenscreen in extreme close-up, highlighting her sculpted cheekbones and olive skin. “We’ve got this joke in vice,” she murmurs in a voice that’s uncommonly sultry for a police detective. “Love costs 10 bucks. True love costs 20.”"*

On counters of neighborhood “taquerias” and Oaxacan restaurants, at Salvadoran farmers market stands and East Los Angeles backyard parties, even at swank Hollywood restaurants, you can see the huge glass “vitroleros,” beehive-shaped jars filled with “aguas frescas” in a spectrum of stunning colors. STC students, brothers go Hollywood with movie poster design - Gilberto and Fernando Alvarez
Filed under [ People ] [ Youth ] [ Texas ]
Tags: HollywoodSouth Texas College Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) Program students are experiencing the glitz and glamour of Hollywood-style movie production first hand. Two lucky students have been chosen to design the movie poster and promotional binder for the film, “The Alvarez Vietnam Story: Brothers in Arms.” The film tells the true story of three Hispanic brothers, Emeterio III, Gilberto and Fernando Alvarez, who risked their lives serving in Vietnam.
Fernando, the youngest brother, is a resident of Edinburg and is actively involved in the production of the movie. He invited students in STC’s CADD Program Digital Imaging classes to participate in the project by designing graphic layouts of posters for the film for review and possible selection.
“I am very happy with the work these students have done,” said Alvarez. “They have gone out of their way to design some outstanding pieces. They look so professional; just like in Hollywood!”
Students in all of the college’s Digital Imagining classes submitted work for consideration. Ultimately, brothers Frank and Joshua Jaramillo were selected to continue working on the project.
“The students feel honored to have been chosen for this great opportunity,” said Rey Sanchez, STC CADD Program chair and Digital Imaging instructor. “Frank and Joshua like the fact that they are two brothers helping to tell the story of the very brave Alvarez brothers. There is a real symmetry in that. Also, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for them and something they will never forget.”
The movie poster designed by Frank and Joshua was selected because it captured the essence of what the Alvarez brothers lived through in the Vietnam War.
“It was a very difficult time for all of us,” said Alvarez. “And it was not only a hardship for us, but also for our families. I selected the work of Frank and Joshua because I felt that it truly told our story. I was drawn to it by my feelings and the looks that we all have on our faces. The Jaramillo brothers are very talented.”
The inspiration for the making of the movie came from a letter written by Alvarez describing in detail everything that he and his brothers lived through while fighting in Vietnam. His letter was directed to the Veteran Affairs Administration discussing the impact of post traumatic stress. The movie serves not only as a tribute to the bravery of the brothers Alvarez, but also as a form of therapy for them and other Hispanic veterans.
“The stories and experiences of Hispanic veterans have not been spotlighted in any major film or media and so this film is not only a milestone for our family, but for all Hispanic veterans,” concluded Alvarez. “So I think it is also fitting for students from STC to be involved in this project because most of the college’s students are Hispanic and they understand the culture and the history, the barriers and the challenges of our population. I look forward to seeing the work of the Jaramillo brothers come alive in our promotions of the movie because it really complements our story.”
For more information about “The Alvarez Vietnam Story: Brothers in Arms” contact Fernando Alvarez at 956-607-1472. For more information about STC’s CADD Program or Digital Imaging courses contact Rey Sanchez at 956-872-6103.
