HITN-TV and HACU Announce the Launch Of College Admissions 411

The Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN), in partnership with The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), announced the launch of College Admissions 411. The Spanish-language series, which will air weekly on HITN-TV beginning September 9, provides practical information about the complicated college admissions process. The program is intended to help and inspire U.S. Latino students, their families, teachers and their community, according to the producers, while answering questions such as "Is it worth going to college?"

One answer provided by the program is that, on average, college graduates earn $1,000,000 more in their lifetime than high school graduates.

The series is available in its Wednesday prime time slot on HITN TV and on the program's dedicated website, http://www.HITN.tv/CA411.

Each episode features Spanish-speaking educators who address the issues that really matter to U.S. Latinos who are applying to college. Big questions like: How much will it cost? and How can I pay for it? as well as the complicated details like How do I fill out the financial aid form?

"HACU helped us receive a tremendous response from leading American universities and colleges," says HITN founder and CEO Jose Luis Rodriguez. "Contributors include HACU-member institutions such as South Texas College, as well as Brooklyn College, MIT and the University of Southern California. Latino community organizations asked us to help them improve their college prep programs. Our new series is a response to their urgent need," says Rodriguez.

According to Dr. Antonio Flores, President and CEO of HACU, "Both HITN and HACU want to reach every student in America who dreams of a better life through a college education but may not be aware of the opportunities within his or her reach. Through College Admissions 411 we also aim to help every Spanish-speaking adult who is working with an aspiring Latino student - as a parent, teacher, administrator or mentor -- become a true champion of Hispanic success in higher education."

Many of the sequences involving High School students were filmed at Harlem's Frederick Douglass Academy. "This amazing project will be very successful," says Dr. Hodge, the school's principal. "American educators everywhere are determined to improve college attendance amongst Latinos."

Topics that are examined this Fall season include: Strategies for U.S. Hispanics; The Application Timeline; A Step-by-Step Guide to Financial Aid; The Importance of Grades; and How to Succeed in the Standardized Tests.

HITN is currently producing 25 episodes of College Admissions 411, with another series planned in 2010.

HITN-TV Launches Inmigracion 411

"Inmigracion 411 is a weekly television series that provides Spanish-speaking Americans with practical legal advice about their immigration issues. Inmigracion 411 is produced by HITN and hosted by Victor Daniel Nieblas, a leading immigration attorney in Los Angeles.

Each week, Mr. Nieblas responds to questions that really matter to U.S. Latinos. In Episode 1, viewers ask:

"What should I do if ICE agents knock on my door?"

"How should I respond if I am taken into custody in a raid at work?"

"Can a change in my marital status impact my immigration status?"

"I've worked in the United States for years, paid my taxes, and built up a successful business. Can I legalize my status?"

"After successfully launching the debut of its television series Destination Casa Blanca 2008, the Hispanic Information & Telecommunications Network (HITN) has partnered with the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) for a special town hall forum on "Hispanic Higher Education." The forum will be broadcast live to HITN's 33 million household viewers nationwide on October 13, 2008 at 5:30pm (ET) from Denver, CO.

"As the Nation's premier educational and cultural network, HITN TV is dedicated to serve the needs of Latino consumers," said José Luis Rodríguez, CEO and Founder of HITN TV. "We are pleased to partner with HACU to make this important effort and ensure that Latinos are not left behind."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Latinos represent 13% of the total population or 38 million people. It is projected that by the year 2050, one-quarter of the U.S. population will be Latino. The Bureau also projects that the Latino school-age population will increase by 166% by the year 2050, while the non-Latino school-age population will grow by just 4% over this same period.

"As the youngest and fastest-growing segment of society in the US, Hispanics are increasingly becoming the workforce for tomorrow," said Dr. Antonio Flores, President and CEO of HACU. "The better educated our workforce, the better the US can compete in the global economy."

Panelists participating in the live telecast of the special town hall forum will examine key issues impacting Latino youth, and HACU will present the presidential candidates with key solutions and recommendations. National Hispanic Network – HITN and DISH Network Announce a Field Trial of a Consumer Education Campaign to Help Latino Consumers with the Coming Digital Transition

"The Hispanic Information & Telecommunications Network (HITN) and DISH Network announced their first field trial of a new public information campaign designed to educate Latino consumers about their choices for television service when the national digital transition occurs on February 17, 2009. The field trial will take place at community based organizations in New York and Puerto Rico using HITN's CBO Connect platform on Wednesday, September 17th at 9:00 a.m. (ET).
On February 17th, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. While the digital transition is heralded for the improvements in service quality and the range of new services it will bring to consumers, there is considerable confusion in markets across the Nation as to the best and most affordable solutions consumers have for continuing their access to television services once the switch to digital services is made.
National surveys show that the American consumers who are least aware of the transition and most at-risk of losing their access to television on February 17th are linguistic and racial minorities, low income families, and seniors. Latino consumers in particular lack knowledge of their choices, facing not only the loss of conventional television services but also loss of access to critical information in the event of catastrophic events.
As the Nation's premier educational and cultural network dedicated to serving the needs of Latino consumers, HITN is committed, as a matter of mission, to consumer education that will help Latinos make sense of the transition and take appropriate action to protect their right of access to TV.
The Latino Digital Transition field test scheduled for Wednesday, September 17th will demonstrate the effectiveness of a unique multi-modal public education strategy that aligns the broadcast strengths of satellite and Internet technologies with the active social engagement strengths of grassroots community organizations in HITN's CBO Connect network in order to engage, train, and help Latino consumers to take informed action on their transition to digital television.
Based on the results of the field test, HITN is considering expanding the Latino Digital Transition campaign to community-based organizations (CBOs) in major markets across the Nation in order to help CBO's prepare local communities for the Transition.
Jose Luis Rodriguez, President and CEO of HITN said that "The Latino Digital Transition campaign is designed to educate Hispanic consumers about their best and most affordable choices in the coming digital transition. It will greatly expand consumer awareness of the transition, and ensure that Latinos retain their access to television services and are not lost in the transition. National satellite provider DISH Network will partner with HITN in Wednesday's field test. HITN and Dish Network will provide experts in the transition, interactive presentations, training, and informational materials. HITN and DISH will also help participating consumers to obtain the government coupons being issued to offset the cost of the converter boxes that will enable digital broadcast to be viewed on older, analog television sets.
Rodriguez praised DISH Network for its willingness to devote time and resources to the effort, saying "The HITN and DISH Network partnership in these field trials to educate Latino consumers about the Digital Transition clearly reflects an understanding of the growing market force of the Nation's Latino audience. "HITN, America's first Latino Public Television Network, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, today unveiled a new brand logo -- one that reflects its role as the leader in Latino public and educational broadcasting. "Today marks a new phase for HITN. Our new logo is meant to serve as a beacon for Hispanics everywhere with its bright orange hue lighting the path to a better tomorrow for our viewers," said founder Jose Luis Rodriguez, CEO of HITN.

HITN has been serving the Hispanic community of the United States and Puerto Rico for 25 years, remaining steadfast in its dedication in bringing educational and entertaining programming to its viewers. A hallmark of HITN's programming is its unique content; creating programs that invite Latino participation and encourages families to live fuller, richer lives. "HITN (Hispanic Information Telecommunications Television Network) announced today that through its internet platform, HITN.tv, it will present the 12th Annual Puerto Rican Salsa Congress to a national and international audience.

Participants from over 30 countries will compete for the coveted title of "World Champion" in the World Open Salsa Championship. Dance competitions have grown immensely in popularity throughout the globe. In the United States shows such as "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance" have attracted millions and created legions of new fans, while in Europe dance competitions have been in vogue for many years. " Colleagues, peers, friends and family, It is with deep regret that I must inform you that Emmis Publishing, the parent company of Tu Ciudad magazine, has suspended our publication and business effective Thursday, June 12th. On the heels of celebrating our third anniversary with the current June/July “Best of Latino L.A.” issue, the milestone is bittersweet. My entire team has been instrumental in what was accomplished in a short period of time. However, due to the current economic climate and our partners’ corporate struggle with other aspects of their businesses, we are faced with the realities of today's hardship. I am extremely proud of our team's ability to produce such a high quality product for the dynamic Latino and Los Angeles community. We have been so touched and honored by the enormous support of readers and humbled by our industry accolades. Ciudad set new standards for Hispanic media and regional publishing by being the first to penetrate this category of acculturated Latinos who are professional, civic-minded, successful individuals. Ciudad quickly became the largest circulated magazine for the Hispanic market in Los Angeles and served the city with a unique voice that is often overlooked. Our ambitious goal of providing our audience with the best the city has to offer was accomplished, but short-lived. HITN’s Destination Casa Blanca 2008 Selected for Cable Industry’s National Elections ‘08 On Demand Initiative

"HITN, the first national Spanish-language public television network in the United States, announced from the National Cable Television Show from New Orleans the selection of its new show, Destination Casa Blanca 2008 to the Cable Industry's national VOD (video on demand) Initiative. Spearheaded by Time Warner Cable and Cox, this groundbreaking project will provide viewers a dedicated VOD channel focused on the upcoming US Presidential election. The agreement will make Destination Casa Blanca 2008 the only Latino-themed program available through VOD, reaching over 90% of the country.

For viewers interested in the Latino perspective as it relates to the election, Destination Casa Blanca 2008 (DCB'08) is a news magazine show exclusively dedicated to examining issues as they affect the Hispanic community. Launched in April 2008, DCB'08 is hosted by award-winning broadcast journalists Ray Suarez and Marlene Fernández and currently airs in 30 million households. Under this new agreement, HITN's Destination Casa Blanca 2008 will double the number of viewers to 60 million households. "We are extremely proud that HITN has been chosen for this VOD Initiative, it speaks to the importance of the Latino vote that a show concerning Hispanic issues and concerns will be at the forefront during this important election," stated HITN's President, José Luis Rodríguez.

With a population of over 46 million, Hispanics are the fastest growing segment in the US and comprises 15% of the total population. Increased voter participation has made the demand for programs such as Destination Casa Blanca 2008 and related HITN programming clear. Cable companies such as Charter, Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner and Cox are all participating in this first ever industry-wide initiative.

The VOD initiative will go live on June 1st and will feature two main sections: one devoted to the presidential candidates and one for programmers who will examine the issues surrounding the election process. Representatives for Time Warner Cable and Cox indicate that content will be distributed on a monthly basis.
