“Inmigracion 411 is a weekly television series that provides Spanish-speaking Americans with practical legal advice about their immigration issues. Inmigracion 411 is produced by HITN and hosted by Victor Daniel Nieblas, a leading immigration attorney in Los Angeles.

Each week, Mr. Nieblas responds to questions that really matter to U.S. Latinos. In Episode 1, viewers ask:

“What should I do if ICE agents knock on my door?”

“How should I respond if I am taken into custody in a raid at work?”

“Can a change in my marital status impact my immigration status?”

“I’ve worked in the United States for years, paid my taxes, and built up a successful business. Can I legalize my status?”

Inmigracion 411 viewers can email or phone their questions to Mr. Nieblas. Some viewers will be selected to meet with Mr. Nieblas in his office for, on camera, a live consultation. Mr. Nieblas will meet with other Latinos in their homes or at their work sites.

Mr. Nieblas will provide answers in the television program and on the program’s website at www.HITN.TV. The website also directs viewers to additional sources of advice.

“We intend to interview CIS, ICE and other government officials,” says Mr. Nieblas. “Our viewers need to understand how government officials implement and enforce immigration laws.”

According to HITN founder and CEO Jose Luis Rodriguez, “Our mission has always been to help each new wave of Latino immigrants to become productive U.S. citizens.” Inmigracion 411 will reach more than 31 million HITN households and more than 60 million on VOD.

“Inmigracion 411 video segments will be available on our website, www.HITN.org,” adds Rodriguez. “Spanish-dominant Hispanics are increasingly turning to the Internet for answers to questions — particularly immigration issues — that can’t wait until the next scheduled television broadcast.”

HITN TV and HACU to Co-Host ‘Hispanic Higher Education’ Town Hall Forum and Present Needs and Solutions to 2008 Presidential Candidates

“After successfully launching the debut of its television series Destination Casa Blanca 2008, the Hispanic Information & Telecommunications Network (HITN) has partnered with the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) for a special town hall forum on “Hispanic Higher Education.” The forum will be broadcast live to HITN’s 33 million household viewers nationwide on October 13, 2008 at 5:30pm (ET) from Denver, CO.

“As the Nation’s premier educational and cultural network, HITN TV is dedicated to serve the needs of Latino consumers,” said José Luis Rodríguez, CEO and Founder of HITN TV. “We are pleased to partner with HACU to make this important effort and ensure that Latinos are not left behind.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Latinos represent 13% of the total population or 38 million people. It is projected that by the year 2050, one-quarter of the U.S. population will be Latino. The Bureau also projects that the Latino school-age population will increase by 166% by the year 2050, while the non-Latino school-age population will grow by just 4% over this same period.

“As the youngest and fastest-growing segment of society in the US, Hispanics are increasingly becoming the workforce for tomorrow,” said Dr. Antonio Flores, President and CEO of HACU. “The better educated our workforce, the better the US can compete in the global economy.”

Panelists participating in the live telecast of the special town hall forum will examine key issues impacting Latino youth, and HACU will present the presidential candidates with key solutions and recommendations. The forum is part of Destination Casa Blanca 2008: The Latino Voice in the Presidential Election series which examines both presidential candidates’ platforms regarding issues that impact U.S. Latinos.

“This forum is part of HITN and HACU’s mission to provide the right tools and education to help Latinos make the best decision during this presidential election,” adds Mr. Rodríguez. “HITN is pleased to continue its role in educating the Hispanic community with the second half of the series on October 30th in Miami, Fla.”

In April 2008, HITN launched its new television series, Destination Casa Blanca 2008: The Latino Voice in the Presidential Election. The English-language program marks the first time in history that a nation-wide television show is dedicated solely to issues affecting the Hispanic community. Destination Casa Blanca 2008 is hosted by award-winning broadcast journalists Ray Suarez and Marlene Fernández. The news magazine show is also available on the Elections ‘08 Video On Demand Channel reaching a total of 29 million cable homes nationwide.

National Hispanic Network - HITN and DISH Network Announce a Field Trial of a Consumer Education Campaign to Help Latino Consumers with the Coming Digital Transition

Tags: ,

“The Hispanic Information & Telecommunications Network (HITN) and DISH Network announced their first field trial of a new public information campaign designed to educate Latino consumers about their choices for television service when the national digital transition occurs on February 17, 2009. The field trial will take place at community based organizations in New York and Puerto Rico using HITN’s CBO Connect platform on Wednesday, September 17th at 9:00 a.m. (ET).
On February 17th, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. While the digital transition is heralded for the improvements in service quality and the range of new services it will bring to consumers, there is considerable confusion in markets across the Nation as to the best and most affordable solutions consumers have for continuing their access to television services once the switch to digital services is made.
National surveys show that the American consumers who are least aware of the transition and most at-risk of losing their access to television on February 17th are linguistic and racial minorities, low income families, and seniors. Latino consumers in particular lack knowledge of their choices, facing not only the loss of conventional television services but also loss of access to critical information in the event of catastrophic events.
As the Nation’s premier educational and cultural network dedicated to serving the needs of Latino consumers, HITN is committed, as a matter of mission, to consumer education that will help Latinos make sense of the transition and take appropriate action to protect their right of access to TV.
The Latino Digital Transition field test scheduled for Wednesday, September 17th will demonstrate the effectiveness of a unique multi-modal public education strategy that aligns the broadcast strengths of satellite and Internet technologies with the active social engagement strengths of grassroots community organizations in HITN’s CBO Connect network in order to engage, train, and help Latino consumers to take informed action on their transition to digital television.
Based on the results of the field test, HITN is considering expanding the Latino Digital Transition campaign to community-based organizations (CBOs) in major markets across the Nation in order to help CBO’s prepare local communities for the Transition.
Jose Luis Rodriguez, President and CEO of HITN said that “The Latino Digital Transition campaign is designed to educate Hispanic consumers about their best and most affordable choices in the coming digital transition. It will greatly expand consumer awareness of the transition, and ensure that Latinos retain their access to television services and are not lost in the transition. We believe we must pull together as a community to do all that we can not only to get the word out about the transition, but to help consumers, face-to-face, with the steps they need to take to manage this change successfully. This is important as a civil right, certainly, though it is vitally important that we prevent the disenfranchisement of many Americans in ways that put them at risk in the face of catastrophic events.”
National satellite provider DISH Network will partner with HITN in Wednesday’s field test. HITN and Dish Network will provide experts in the transition, interactive presentations, training, and informational materials. HITN and DISH will also help participating consumers to obtain the government coupons being issued to offset the cost of the converter boxes that will enable digital broadcast to be viewed on older, analog television sets.
Rodriguez praised DISH Network for its willingness to devote time and resources to the effort, saying “The HITN and DISH Network partnership in these field trials to educate Latino consumers about the Digital Transition clearly reflects an understanding of the growing market force of the Nation’s Latino audience. We are pleased to have their support for this important effort to ensure that Latinos are not left behind when we make the transition to digital services early next year.”

A hallmark of HITN’s programming is its unique content; creating programs that invite Latino participation and encourages families to live fuller, richer lives. “HITN was founded 25 years ago as a response to the lack of educational programming available to Hispanics. Now, just as then, there is still a tremendous need for the type of programming we provide,” said Mr. Rodriguez.

The launch of this new brand logo signifies the beginning of a new era at HITN. “We are poised to establish ourselves as the ‘go-to’ network for Hispanics who are looking for educationally rich, entertaining and informative programming. Coupled with the new brand, HITN is ready to lead the way for years to come,” concluded Dan Rodriguez, Director of Communications and Public Affairs.

Marketing firm Garcia 360 provided the necessary technical and professional support to derive the new HITN brand. Speaking on the experience of working with HITN, Luis Garcia of Garcia 360 said, “HITN is passionate about helping Latinos navigate their life in the US. We feel this new brand image reflects the essence of what HITN stands for in relation to its mission and its commitment to the audience they serve. To be a part of this brand evolution has been very rewarding.”

CEO Jose Luis Rodriguez commented during the unveiling, “Today’s media landscape challenges HITN to distinguish itself from other national networks. Our new brand will help us break through the cluttered environment by ensuring our viewers that when they see the HITN brand they are in tune with clear and consistent communication.”

Tu Ciudad magazine closure

Tags: , , ,

I rec’d this e-mail late yesterday. Surprising

Colleagues, peers, friends and family,

It is with deep regret that I must inform you that Emmis Publishing, the parent company of Tu Ciudad magazine, has suspended our publication and business effective Thursday, June 12th. On the heels of celebrating our third anniversary with the current June/July “Best of Latino L.A.” issue, the milestone is bittersweet. My entire team has been instrumental in what was accomplished in a short period of time. However, due to the current economic climate and our partners’ corporate struggle with other aspects of their businesses, we are faced with the realities of today’s hardship.

I am extremely proud of our team’s ability to produce such a high quality product for the dynamic Latino and Los Angeles community. We have been so touched and honored by the enormous support of readers and humbled by our industry accolades. Ciudad set new standards for Hispanic media and regional publishing by being the first to penetrate this category of acculturated Latinos who are professional, civic-minded, successful individuals. Ciudad quickly became the largest circulated magazine for the Hispanic market in Los Angeles and served the city with a unique voice that is often overlooked.

Our ambitious goal of providing our audience with the best the city has to offer was accomplished, but short-lived. I am absolutely indebted to all of the strong talent who contributed to the publication, especially our editorial architects, Angelo Figueroa and Oscar Garza. We thank every individual who expressed interest and enthusiasm for our efforts and allowed us to work so passionately and diligently for you during these past few years.

Many of you will be contacted directly by myself or other representatives from the magazine to personally address our closure. As always, I am available to answer any concerns or questions.

Lastly, I am hopeful to give the brand new life in the near future. Until then, I want to say that this has been a dream of mine come true and I thank you for making Ciudad a part of your life.

Best regards,
Jaime Gamboa.

Under this new agreement, HITN’s Destination Casa Blanca 2008 will double the number of viewers to 60 million households. “We are extremely proud that HITN has been chosen for this VOD Initiative, it speaks to the importance of the Latino vote that a show concerning Hispanic issues and concerns will be at the forefront during this important election,” stated HITN’s President, José Luis Rodríguez.

With a population of over 46 million, Hispanics are the fastest growing segment in the US and comprises 15% of the total population. Increased voter participation has made the demand for programs such as Destination Casa Blanca 2008 and related HITN programming clear. Cable companies such as Charter, Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner and Cox are all participating in this first ever industry-wide initiative.

The VOD initiative will go live on June 1st and will feature two main sections: one devoted to the presidential candidates and one for programmers who will examine the issues surrounding the election process. Representatives for Time Warner Cable and Cox indicate that content will be distributed on a monthly basis.

“HITN and the Latino community applaud the cable industry for its inclusiveness and foresight in making sure that diverse perspectives are represented in the media,” concluded Mr. Rodríguez.

HITN, the First National Spanish-Language Public Television Network in the U.S., Launched Nationwide Television Show — Destination Casa Blanca 2008: The Latino Voice in the Presidential Election

“HITN, the first national Spanish-language public television network in the United States, aired the inaugural broadcast of Destination Casa Blanca 2008: The Washington Perspective Roundtable, on Thursday evening, April 10 at 9pm. The show is hosted by award-winning journalist Marlene Fernández, who welcomed as her first guests Art A. Estopinan, Chief of Staff for Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-18); Mr. William Ramos, Office Director for the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) in DC; Jane Murguía, President & CEO of the National Council of La Raza; and Democratic Congresswoman Hilda Solis (CA-32).

One of the topics of discussion in the inaugural show was the Immigration Backlog. “In July 2007, the Bush Administration raised the naturalization fee application by 66 percent. This fee increase was meant to improve efficiency at USCIS,” said Solis. Solis continued by saying, “Unfortunately, the USCIS is months behind schedule despite these fee increases. The realization of the American dream — including the right to vote — is being unnecessarily delayed for many. These delays are inexcusable and reprehensible. America’s immigration system should be efficient and effective, especially for those abiding by the law and eager to participate in civic society.”

Destination Casa Blanca 2008 was created to focus on Latinos’ needs and concerns unaddressed by the campaigns and not-yet-covered by the mainstream media. HITN will utilize the strong relationships it has with local community-based organizations throughout the country to bring grassroots issues to a national level. Viewers will see leading public policy experts participating in dialogue and debate on matters specific to the Latino community, such as immigration, the economy, health care, and education, as well as social and cultural affairs. “We have a unique opportunity to build a bridge between the candidates’ campaigns and Hispanic communities through the usage of effective multiple media platforms in an unprecedented way.” says José Luis Rodríguez, CEO of HITN.

The English-language program marks the first time in history that a nation-wide television series dedicated solely to issues affecting the Hispanic community will air in over 30 million U.S. households. Breaking away from its traditional Spanish-language programming, the series is designed to facilitate communication between Latinos and the campaign’s staff, many of whom are non-Hispanic. This will give the candidates an opportunity to learn what Latinos think, in the language they understand.

The show will consist of three original broadcasts: Destination Casa Blanca 2008 “One-on-One,” hosted by Marlene Fernández, will eventually air on Wednesdays at 9pm and again at 12am; Destination Casa Blanca 2008: “Newsmakers Roundtable,” hosted by Fernández airs on Thursdays at 9pm and again at 12am; Destination Casa Blanca 2008: “Washington Perspective Roundtable,” hosted by Ray Suarez, airs on Fridays at 9pm and again at 12am. HITN is available on Dish Network; DirectTV; Time Warner Cable (NY, NJ, TX); Comcast (IL, CO); Charter (CA, NV, WA, GA); AT&T U-verse and Verizon FiOs nationwide.

Additionally, clips of the programs will be available on HITN’s website, www.HITN.TV , further stimulating viewer participation and connecting Hispanics to its guests via texting and social networking media, such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. This unprecedented interactive component gives viewers yet another platform to view and interact with those shaping the presidential race. Utilizing expanded and multiple outreach platforms, Destination Casa Blanca 2008 will help create well-informed citizens and increase the participation by Latinos in the quest for the presidency. Never before has there been a political program that brings Latino interests and concerns about presidential politics to the forefront.

According to the Pew Hispanic Center, this year eligible Latino voters will loom as a potential swing vote. Elected officials welcome the show as an opportunity to interact with the community in an effective and proactive manner. “It is very important to educate the Hispanic community to participate in the electoral process so that their voice is heard, Destination Casa Blanca is an important venue through which our community can learn about the civic responsibilities of citizens and the importance of exercising the privileged right to vote,” said Republican Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL - 21).

Hispanics are the fastest growing Ethnic minority comprising 15% of the US Population. In 2007 and 2008, Hispanic voting surged during the primaries which resulted in a significant narrowing of the gap between the two Democratic candidates. “The 46 million Latinos across the country are poised to have a historic impact on the 2008 Presidential election, and their strength has already been seen in record turnouts for the primaries and caucuses. It is being said that Hispanics could be the deciding factor this year, but the only way to make that happen is to get out and vote! By standing together, we will make our voices heard,” adds Democratic Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-12).

With Hispanic voters now looked upon as key arbiters in the nation’s political future, Destination Casa Blanca 2008 is the program that lets the nation know what they are thinking and the questions they have about the future. “*

Radio Bilingüe Partners with HITN TV for Groundbreaking Multimedia Election Coverage at WRTE January 14th-15th

Tags: , , ,

“Radio Bilingüe will kick off its new election coverage radio series, “Hacia el Voto 2008,” from WRTE Radio Arte in Chicago January 14th and 15th with a new partner — the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN-TV) in New York, the first national Latino public television network in the US, who will simultaneously broadcast the live program on their television network.

“HITN, with access to more than 20 million households, joins Radio Bilingüe and WRTE in a movement by the three Latino community-based media organizations to provide a wider voice and dialogue for the Latino community during the 2008 national elections,” said Jose Luis Rodriguez, HITN founder and president. “This historic, multimedia partnership demonstrates that we can work together to ensure our community has access to informational tools that will help its members participate meaningfully in the nation’s democratic process and make a significant difference.”

Hugo Morales, Radio Bilingüe founder and executive director adds, “This partnership is a milestone for the Latino community because three major Latino media organizations are joining forces to provide their audiences with pertinent information about pressing issues affecting their lives. By joining forces with HITN in our goal to provide the best communication and coverage possible, we succeed in bringing the most up-to-date and relevant information to the Latino public through three major media outlets – television, radio and the Internet.”

“Hacia el Voto 2008” is a year-long election coverage radio series, including special coverage at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, that will air the next 12 months on Radio Bilingüe’s award-winning daily talk show, Línea Abierta, from 3 to 4 p.m. EST.

The two live shows that will air in January will be made possible through the direct collaboration from young radio producers from WRTE, a youth-driven radio station in Chicago. The January 14th, 2 pm EST, broadcast will focus on the youngest voters, exploring issues that fuel youth’s fervor to participate as well as those factors that discourage young people from casting their ballot. On January 15th, 2 pm EST the broadcast will address the needs and perspectives of immigrant youth as it pertains to the elections.

HITN, in turn, will capitalize on its reputation of encouraging live audience participation by providing a 1-800 number where viewers can call in to discuss information and provide feedback relevant to the Latino community’s political representation in the 2008 elections.

In addition, both the radio and TV versions of these programs will be available on the web, on www.radiobilingue.org, and on www.hitn.tv.

Funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Radio Bilingüe’s new bilingual weekly elections program also will include a special itinerant series, “Línea Abierta on the Road,” that begins with Monday’s inaugural WRTE show. These remote broadcasts will include live town hall meetings, roundtable discussions and special reports originating from the home sites of partnering stations such as WRTE. “*
