The Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (www.AHHE.org) and the National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Health (www.NHCCH.com) today announced the launching of their social media campaign, which will partner Hispanic media, the country’s leading Hispanic professional health associations and Hispanic consumers. The launching of the partnership coincides with the appointment of Mirian Zavala, RN, MS, Doctoral Candidate, as the chair of AHHE’s Policy Committee. The social media campaign launch and Ms. Zavala will be introduced at a reception, “Health Care Reform: Communicating Policy with Hispanic Media,” on Monday, November 23, 2009, 6:00-8:00pm, at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, 16th floor Sky lobby.

In attendance, and partnering with AHHE and the NHCCH on this initiative, will be the leading national Hispanic health association presidents, including George A. Zeppenfeldt-Cestero, President, Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives; Suzanne Colin, PhD, President, the Association of Hispanic Mental Health Professionals; Miguel Hernandez, MD, President, the Dominican Medical Association; Norma Martinez Rogers, PhD, RN, FAAN, President, National Association of Hispanic Nurses; Samuel Arce, MD, President, Spanish American Medical Dental Society of NY, Inc., and Luis A. Vazquez, Chairman, National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Health. The Honorable Joel Rivera, Chairman of the Health Committee for the NYC Council and other elected officials, will give remarks during the event.

George A. Zeppenfeldt-Cestero, President of AHHE, will also be working closely with the national Hispanic professional membership associations to establish a Roundtable of Hispanic Health Association Presidents to insure a unified voice on health issues impacting our community and providing authoritative information to both the media and consumers.

According to Marcelo Rodriguez, President of Inlanet, a leading Hispanic Internet Marketing agency based in New York, "It is of utmost importance that a prominent Hispanic association such as AHHE starts an initiative targeting a community that is growing so fast on the internet - almost 23 million and counting - and by definition is social. AHHE will become a major Hispanic resource on the internet by establishing its presence online where Hispanics frequently turn to for authoritative health resources. AHHE’s presence will be displayed on the main social networks, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube.”

Health Disparities Tax American Economy. According to researchers commissioned by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the combined costs of health inequalities and premature death in the nation cost $1.24 trillion between 2003 and 2006. Patients from racial and ethnic minority communities, who bear a disproportionate share of our nation’s health problems, spent nearly $230 billion in excess medical care costs. http://diverseeducation.com/artman/publish/article_13067.shtml

As one of the least likely demographic groups to have insurance, Hispanics might be expected to have high hopes for the current reform efforts. In the nearly two dozen congressional districts with a Hispanic majority, the number of people with health insurance is 16 percentage points below the national average, according to a NationalJournal.com analysis. Hispanics accounted for 15 percent of the nation's population in 2007, but 32 percent of the nation's uninsured.

Financial support for this event is provided by national partner, Aetna, and regional partners, NewYork Presbyterian, North Shore-LIJ, Healthfirst, Healthplex and event sponsors, Fidelis Care/New York, Atlantis Health Plan and Inlanet. Credentialed press may register for the event at www.AHHE.org.

Small Business Administration (SBA)

USHCC

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), the leading advocate for nearly 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses and over 200 local Hispanic chambers throughout the United States, described a mixed reaction to today's announced improvements to small business lending, noting a move in the right direction, but also an expansion of old measures that have not yielded desired results.

As part of February's stimulus package, Congress allocated $730 million to the Small Business Administration (SBA) to temporarily waive fees and increase guarantees the agency offers banks that make qualifying small business loans. Despite those measures, SBA lending continued to fall, dropping 36% in the 2009 fiscal year compared to a year earlier.

Twenty-two of the largest TARP recipient banks have cut their small business loan portfolios by $8 billion.

"The solution is to somehow ease the reluctance of banks to lend to small businesses, and for the SBA to reassert itself in the role of provider of direct loans." said David C. Lizárraga, USHCC Chairman of the Board. "Beyond that, the Administration must couple any federal effort to promote small business lending with technical assistance on the ground in order to help businesses navigate the process."

Small and minority entrepreneurs often face an inherent challenge maintaining appropriate financials, managing cash flow, navigating the application process and preparing quality materials including loan packages and sound business plans. These are large obstacles for any small or minority-owned business that applies for a loan.

Lizárraga continued, "many local Hispanic Chambers throughout the country provide free technical assistance to thousands of Hispanic entrepreneurs and work closely with financial institutions and local SBA offices to promote and ensure access to capital. We can certainly use federal support to assist a much larger number of entrepreneurs. The need for this type of assistance is far greater than is being currently met."

America's small businesses employ half of the country's private sector workforce and have traditionally created 70-80% of the country's new jobs. Since January 2008, these businesses have lost over 2.5 million jobs. While the Administration has worked to reduce fees and improve Federal guarantees on SBA loans, small businesses cannot benefit unless banks actually issue them. Emergency ARC small business loans from the SBA have such restrictive terms that few businesses qualify. For example, despite thousands of applications for assistance, only 61 businesses in the entire state of Texas have qualified for loans.

"The Small Business Administration provides emergency loans to small businesses after a natural disaster ... and this economy is looking a lot like a disaster for too many small businesses," said Javier Palomarez, President and CEO of the USHCC. "Small businesses need help now, and the SBA must get back in the business of direct loans, so it can be a lender of last resort."

Palomarez continued, "Greater access to TARP funds for small business loans and using CDFIs is a great step, but is unlikely to generate many additional loans unless resources are made available to assist businesses to access these funds."

About the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
Founded in 1979, the USHCC actively promotes the economic growth and development of Hispanic entrepreneurs and represents the interests of nearly 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States that generate nearly $400 billion annually. It also serves as the umbrella organization for more than 200 local Hispanic chambers in the United States and Puerto Rico.

About Hispanics Today
Hispanics Today is an English-language television show that highlights the largest and fastest growing segment of the U.S. population -- the Latino market - and their impact on American business, politics, and culture. The show reaches 84% of Hispanic television viewers in 165 markets.

About USHCC Foundation
The USHCC Foundation is committed to giving Hispanics alternatives for life preparation and life-long learning by developing and implementing initiatives and educational campaigns to awaken and nurture their entrepreneurial spirit. The Foundation leverages corporate and public support to ensure that existing and aspiring Hispanic entrepreneurs gain access and achieve success in the world of business.

The Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce has announced it will hold its first Hispanic Business and Technology Expo in San Diego, California. The event will be held at the San Diego Convention Center on September 10th & 11th, 2010.

The President of the Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce, Tayde Aburto, said San Diego was selected as the host city because its proximity to Mexico offers businesses the benefits of a globally strategic location. Aburto said "This region has a high-concentration of Hispanic-owned businesses as well as a strong technology sector which provides the ideal climate to host the first Hispanic Business and Technology Expo."

The two-day Hispanic Business and Technology Expo will feature a Business Showcase where exhibitors will have the opportunity to increase their company's awareness within the Hispanic community. According to Aburto, "The Business Showcase will provide outstanding opportunities for branding, sampling, product testing and market research."

The Expo will also promote the use of the Internet as a sales and marketing tool. In addition, attendees will learn how to maximize business efficiency with the latest IT developments. "We want people to walk away with strategies, tips and tactics to help their businesses grow, profit and succeed", said Aburto. He added, "We are lining up educational and practical seminars geared at building business growth and development opportunities."

The Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce is urging businesses to incorporate the Hispanic Business Showcase at the Expo into their 2010 marketing strategy. "Proper preparation is very important to insure that you create a favorable impression of your organization", said Arburto.
