United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Endorses MillerCoors Urban Entrepreneurs Series
Tags: Coors, Hispanic Chamber
The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) has endorsed the MillerCoors Urban Entrepreneurs Series (MUES), an award-winning program that provides business grants to young, aspiring entrepreneurs. The USHCC represents the interests of the almost three million Hispanic-owned businesses, and is supporting the MUES national business plan competition which focuses on providing opportunities for up-and-coming urban business owners. Since its inception in 1999, the MUES program has been dedicated to assisting and advising aspiring entrepreneurs, allowing them to realize their dreams of owning and operating their own businesses, by providing expert analysis and numerous business grants.
“We are proud and honored to have the involvement of partners who are the pillars of our communities, like the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce,” said Jose Ruano, Manager, Multicultural Relations, MillerCoors. “Grassroots outreach efforts are crucial to reaching the core Hispanic audience of upcoming entrepreneurs. The USHCC is encouraging participation in the MUES program by communicating this once in a lifetime opportunity to their constituency,” Ruano said.
Ruano noted that the MUES program has helped contribute to the advancement of aspiring young professionals by placing them on the path to success. “The importance of empowering the young business minds of our communities and enabling them to reach their goals is a task that requires a collective effort from support systems within our communities, and providing this support system is a common goal of MillerCoors and the USHCC,” he added.
“For nearly 30 years, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has been committed to helping Hispanic-owned businesses realize and achieve their full potential,” said Augustine Martinez, President & CEO of the USHCC. He noted the USHCC is promoting the MUES program by reaching out to its vast network of Hispanic business owners, highlighting the program’s benefits and driving participation. “The USHCC was created to ensure that the concerns and needs of the Hispanic business community were heard and met. As the number of Hispanic-owned businesses continues to grow in the U.S., we proudly endorse the MillerCoors Urban Entrepreneurs Series and salute MillerCoors for taking a leading role in ensuring the empowerment of the young entrepreneurs of our communities,” Martinez added.
As the program continues to evolve and reach the next generation of urban entrepreneurs, MUES also recently re-launched its interactive Web site, www.millercoorsmues.com, in Web 2.0. The site offers valuable information regarding the business plan competition and is additionally a substantial resource and tool for aspiring entrepreneurs. Through the site, future business moguls can interactively seek guidance from business professionals, gain valuable insight from previous winners through their blogs on MUES Talk, and get an exclusive, behind the scenes look at the competition through MUES TV. The Web site also includes the MUES business grant competition application and guidelines.
Over the course of the MUES program, approximately 1,400 business plans have been submitted and Miller has awarded a nearly $1 million benefiting more than 100 urban entrepreneurs throughout the nation. It is estimated that 50 percent of these businesses are currently operational, benefiting urban America by providing jobs and sustaining economic growth and development in sometimes blighted communities.
To support the program, MillerCoors, is continuing its relationships with community partners, including the Atlanta Business League, the Chicago Urban League, the Detroit Urban League, the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Dallas, the Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas, Recycling Black Dollars of Los Angeles, the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Urban League.
Call for Entries
An integral component of MUES is the Business Plan Competition, which concludes with grants awarded to young professionals to invest as start-up capital for their new or existing businesses. This year’s top winner will be awarded a $50,000 grant, and four others will receive grants of $25,000 each. The competition is open to participants between the ages of 21 and 35, and the deadline for entries is Monday, December 1, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. (CST).

McEvoy, president of EMBARQ Business, Honored by Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando
Tags: Hispanic Chamber
Tom McEvoy wasn’t born here, but he thinks of himself as a Florida native, and this week’s visit “back home” was especially gratifying, as he received a prestigious Sun Award from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando.
McEvoy, president of EMBARQ Business, received the award today at a reception sponsored by the Hispanic Chamber and hosted by EMBARQ at its regional headquarters in Apopka. McEvoy spent his formative, college and early-career years in Florida before moving to Kansas in 1998 as a vice president for former EMBARQ parent Sprint. He said the award holds special meaning for him.
“I always have thought of central Florida as home, and no matter how often I come back, it is like home,” said McEvoy, who moved to the Orlando area with his parents when he was 13. “Through school, college and much of my telecom career, I lived in Apopka, Altamonte and Tallahassee. This was home, and this is like being recognized by my hometown.”
“The Sun Award is presented to an outstanding, dedicated individual who has contributed to the enrichment and overall growth of the region’s culture, community outreach and economic development,” said Ramon Ojeda, executive director of the Hispanic Chamber. “We are pleased to present this to Tom McEvoy for his personal and professional contributions to this region’s Hispanic community.”

U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Disavows McCain-Palin Press Release
Tags: Hispanic Chamber, USHCC
The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), the national representative for approximately 2.5 million Hispanic-owned businesses, today disavowed a press release issued on October 8 by the McCain-Palin campaign claiming that a majority of the Board of Directors of the USHCC endorsed Senator McCain as candidate for President of the United States. The press release erroneously suggested that the USHCC itself endorsed Senator McCain. The press release was not authorized by the USHCC nor by all of the individuals cited in the release.
“Let it be clear that the USHCC has made no endorsements of political candidates and our board has not taken a position to endorse any candidate,” stated David C. Lizarraga, Chairman of the USHCC Board of Directors.
“As a matter of fairness, we wrote to the McCain-Palin campaign on October 8 urging a retraction. In lieu of such a retraction, we felt the need to publicly disavow their release to avoid any misunderstanding,” said Lizarraga.
“The USHCC is a non-partisan organization. The only things we endorse are public policy issues affecting the Hispanic business community,” stated Augustine Martinez, President and CEO of the USHCC.”
The USHCC has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with both Senators McCain and Obama. Whoever becomes president following the November elections will have our full cooperation in order to ensure that the views of the Hispanic business community are well represented at the policy table,” added Lizarraga.
About the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
Founded in 1979, the USHCC actively promotes the economic growth and development of Hispanic entrepreneurs and represents the interests of approximately 2.5 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States that generate almost $400 billion annually. It also serves as the umbrella organization for 200 local Hispanic chambers in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Bolivia and Uruguay. “

Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce - Small Business Association Re-launched Website
Tags: Hispanic Chamber
The Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce, an online small business association focused on promoting e-business tools among small business owners, has launched its re-designed website, www.hiscec.com, with a vibrant new look and significant layout updates.
In considering a new web design, HISCEC’s team wanted to improve its previous look without losing the brand awareness gained since its April 23, 2008.
Under the creative direction of German Bravo and Enrique Torres, HISCEC’s design team created an architecture and visual design that brings the site’s most valuable content to the surface, where users can find it; the look was considerably improved, making the site more attractive to users.
“The purpose behind this re-launch is to offer a more professional and clean look. We have focused on improving HISCEC’s online business directory as well as the “back office” of the e-commerce tool developed by the Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce” said Jose Aburto, “We want to be able to bring the best service we can to our Members. We want to show our commitment to our Members by improving HISCEC’s website and services. We are going to keep working hard to help small business owners with their online marketing needs and e-business strategies. We want to become an online business association well known for promoting benefits to organizations, individual members, and the community”.
The re-launched of HISCEC’s website is just the prelude to the new services that are going to be added to the site within the following weeks.

The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (www.abcte.org) (ABCTE) today announced it has partnered with the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (fshcc.com) (FSHCC) to recruit and certify more teachers of color for high-need Florida schools.
Currently, only 16% of teachers nationwide are individuals of color, compared with 41% of the student populations. FSHCC and ABCTE will work together on community outreach and obtaining local business involvement. The partnership has the goal of recruiting 300 new teachers for Florida schools over the next year. Free information sessions on the scholarship program will be held throughout the state this October.
ABCTE’s Teach and Inspire Scholarship Program offers a scholarship to earn certification and a $1000 stipend to program participants, and requires a 3-year teaching commitment in a high-need district and school. The scholarship is available for those pursuing Florida state teaching certification in the critical areas of math, science, and special education. Individuals can complete ABCTE’s online certification program without additional college courses, and while working full-time. In order to obtain certification, candidates must demonstrate mastery on subject area and professional teaching knowledge examinations.
ABCTE’s Teach and Inspire Scholarship Program currently works with the following districts in Florida: Broward, DeSoto, Duval, Gadsden, Hardee, Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, Polk, and Volusia.
Individuals in the scholarship program are given additional support and mentorship throughout their program and once they enter the classroom. Already the scholarship program has recruited more than 150 career changers and recent college graduates to enter the teaching profession.
Founded in February 2000, the FSHCC includes 28 chapters and more than 30,000 members. It is the only statewide economic development organization that addresses the Hispanic business market exclusively. The Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce offers Hispanic-owned and Hispanic-responsive businesses a voice at a local and state level, as well as a reliable venue for business development, marketing, continuing education and networking.
“We look forward to working with the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to find new ways to reach potential teachers in the Hispanic community,” said ABCTE president David W. Saba.
“We are very excited about our partnership with the ABCTE Teach and Inspire Scholarship Program to host information sessions throughout Florida for aspiring teachers,” said Julio Fuentes, president & CEO of the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Last year, 72,000 Florida students started the school year without a qualified teacher. America needs millions of new teachers over the next decade, and ABCTE is working hard to encourage more talented professionals to pursue teaching. ABCTE’s Teach and Inspire Scholarship Program targets highly knowledgeable career changers to help fill teacher shortages in high-need schools, districts, and subject areas.

Wells Fargo Foundation Provides $250,000 Grant to Empower Hispanic Chambers of Commerce
Tags: Hispanic Chamber, USHCC, Wells Fargo
Representatives from the Wells Fargo Foundation announced Thursday, September 25, a new grant for $250,000 to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USHCC Foundation) to continue efforts to build the capacity of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. The new grant will build on activities started in 2007 by the USHCC Foundation. Those previous activities were funded by a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to identify the needs of local and regional Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. The announcement was made during the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 29th Annual National Convention and Business Expo.
The recently completed first-phase grant activities included a survey and research that have identified several priority areas for the Hispanic business community. According to the survey, local, regional and statewide Hispanic Chambers of Commerce seek training and resources to strengthen governance and administrative functions. Additionally, the research found that Hispanic businesses are in need of capital to begin, grow and expand their companies, an issue of particular importance in the current economic climate.
“The USHCC Foundation is committed to the advancement of the Hispanic community’s economic development and entrepreneurship skills,” said David C. Lizárraga, Chair of the Board for the USHCC and USHCC Foundation. “This new Wells Fargo Foundation grant will support our proactive strategies to empower Hispanic-owned businesses and help expand the reach of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce.”
“For many years, Wells Fargo has enjoyed a growing and supportive alliance with the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce,” said Tim Rios, Senior Vice President of Corporate Community Development and national spokesperson for the Wells Fargo Latino Business Services Program. “We look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship with the USHCC Foundation and this grant illustrates Wells Fargo’s continued commitment to the Latino business community.”
The future activities supported by the new grant will focus on improving governance and financial models of local chambers, as well as assisting them in fundraising and procurement. Future studies are planned to explore in more detail the financial needs of Hispanic-owned businesses to assess the size of need, determine the need for loans versus equity financing, identify the outreach or educational program needed to increase the financial capacity of Hispanic-owned businesses, and to better understand what role local Hispanic Chambers of Commerce may play in meeting the needs of their respective members. “

Coors Light Líderes has partnered with the Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to recognize emerging leaders in the Hispanic community. Ten individuals, selected for their leadership and their desire to make a difference in their communities, will participate in the Hispanic Business Education and Training, Inc., (HBET) Latino Leadership Symposium and were recognized on-field before the game at the Oakland Raiders Fiesta Latina at McAfee Coliseum, Sunday, September 28, 2008.
The leaders recognized include: Jose Avitia, Josias Aguiar, Hon. Abel Guillen, Hector Javier Preciado, Mark Salinas, Elisa Marquez, Marty Zielke, Bernadette Zermeño, Elsa Saenz, and Liz Morales-Contreras.
According to Joedis Avila, multicultural relations manager for MillerCoors, the ten Líderes HBET Symposium participants will receive leadership training that focuses on individual talents, challenges and core values; and how they can maximize their civic participation through action and leadership. “These leaders are from all walks of life, but they all have one thing in common: a legacy of community involvement that blends seamlessly into their professions and daily activities,” Avila said.
“As a mentor and role model to youth in our surrounding area, I believe it is important to acquire as much skill and knowledge to further develop my role as a leader,” said Jose Avitia, one of the individuals selected. “I believe that attending this Symposium will further help me in assisting the Latino community.”
Josias Aguiar, another selected leader explained: “I believe that it is important to give back to [the] community because it nourishes our families and youth.”
The symposium is a one-day workshop led by renowned Hispanic leadership instructor/consultant, Juan Lopez of Amistad and Associates. During the workshop, these Latino leaders will complete a certified leadership self-evaluation assessment and participate in roundtable discussions of personal challenges, insights on power, responsibility and accountability.
Avila said that the Symposium will provide participants with an opportunity to interact with prominent business leaders and sponsors of their training, as well as acknowledge their participation and completion of the program. He said they also will identify actions or ideas to put their leadership into motion in their workplace, business or in the community. “Mainly, we hope to provide the inspiration and the incentive to continue growing in their roles as leaders in the community and to make a difference,” Avila said.
“I would like to thank MillerCoors and the Coors Light team for their generous contribution towards the Hispanic Business Education and Training, Inc., Community Leadership Training Symposium,” said Ron Silva, President of HBET. “The Líderes Program and the HBET Symposium will help create greater access for emerging Latino community leaders to serve on policy-making tables and represent Latino businesses and community interests in Alameda County.”
The Coors Light Líderes Program started in 2006 to provide leadership development and training to Latino and Latina business and community leaders throughout the United States. So far, more than 500 leaders have received the Líderes training. The Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce recognized the need to provide training and development for talented Latino business professionals to recognize within themselves and others what leadership is and how to make a difference in their communities.

The 29th annual United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Convention and Business Expo concludes with a gala celebration sponsored by AT&T, Sprint Nextel Corporation, and Wells Fargo.
The dominant theme for this year’s convention has been education for business owners about tools and resources needed to grow Hispanic-owned businesses. It is estimated that the total purchasing power of Hispanics in America will exceed $1.3 Trillion by 2012.
Banking Giant Wachovia Lends a Hand
The Alianza Partner, the highest-level sponsor, for the convention and business expo this year is Wachovia (www.Wachovia.com). Senior Vice President and Director for Leadership Practices, Rosie Saez, said, “For me, small business is the anchor that sustains our communities, and in particular our Hispanic communities, in our nation today.”
Saez emphasized that Wachovia provides banking services to small and medium sized businesses, and that they also spend considerable resources helping businesses understand how to write business plans and marketing plans, and how to provide guidance in financing a business via bank loans as well as private equity investments.
Juan Silveira, Senior Vice President and Director of the Interactive Design Group for Wachovia, added that his company employs over 10,000 employees of Hispanic heritage and that this provides them a competitive advantage in serving the more than 2.5 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the US.
Bilingual Life Insurance Services from S.USA Life
The USHCC also highlighted at this year’s convention a new alliance with S.USA Life Insurance that will be managed by Hispanic Chamber Insurance Services, a USHCC-owned insurance agency. The company’s term life and whole life products will be initially sold under the alliance program in California, and then the program will expand nationwide over the next several years.
Vikki Pryor, the President and CEO of S.USA Life and its parent company SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance (www.SUSA.com) and the first African- American woman to head a life insurance company in the US, was proud to share that her company is committed to diversity inside the organization as well as throughout communities in the nation that have been underserved by the financial services industry.

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 29th Annual National Convention and Business Expo, which is being hosted in Sacramento, honored today Latina business owners, and gave business leaders from across the United States great insight into potential for growth. USHCC leaders David Lizarraga and Augustine Martinez were joined by Lt. Governor John Garamendi and Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration Jovita Carranza to discuss the importance of Hispanic-owned businesses, and the various government-related procurement opportunities available to them. “Hispanic-owned businesses are a very important part of our economy. We are growing and succeeding, and our influence in business and industry sectors is stronger than ever,” said Lizarraga. Of the 23 million businesses in the United States, 7%, or 2.5 million, are Hispanic, the largest percentage of any minority group. Of those, 700,000 are in California alone. Revenues for Hispanic-owned businesses in California are at $228 billion per year and almost $400 billion nationally. The Procurement Breakfast held this morning underlined the importance of generating opportunities for Hispanic businesses. The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Convention’s goal is to bring business owners and leaders together to match Hispanic-owned businesses with companies or agencies — state, national, or private — that have procurement opportunities. In California, 25% of state contracts for products or services must be destined to small-businesses. A large percentage of small businesses are Hispanic. In addition, State Senator and Majority Senate Leader Gloria Romero joined USHCC Vice-Chair Elizabeth Gallagher and financial expert Julie Stav to honor Latina business leaders at a special Luncheon. “Latina-owned businesses continue to lead and make a positive impact in each one of our communities,” said Elisa Garcia of Office Depot. Ms. Yrma Rico, President of Rico & Rico, received the Ultimate Latina Award for her outstanding service to the Hispanic business world. Rico overcame adversity to become one of the most successful Latina-business women in California. She is a former migrant worker, who started her television career in Fresno. She went on to become an equity holder at Entravision Corporation. “Ms. Rico truly exemplifies what hard-work and ambition can do to accomplish the American Dream. Her story is truly amazing, and other women can relate to her, and be inspired to succeed,” said Jeff Byers, Regional Sales and Marketing Manager, BMW of North America. The USHCC National Convention and Business Expo is one of the largest gatherings of Hispanic business leaders and owners from throughout the country, and it’s expected to bring thousands of people to the Capital, with revenues of $2.5 million for the city. The USHCC 29th Annual National Convention is being held at the Sacramento Convention Center from September 24-27, 2008, and brings with it workshops on telecommunications, technology, and environmentally friendly business practices, as well as procurement and networking opportunities.
