Solis today issued the following statement regarding the AFL-CIO and American Rights at Work report “ICED OUT: How Immigration Enforcement Has Interfered with Workers’ Rights.”

"The Department of Labor is firmly committed to protecting the rights of all workers, and especially the rights of the most vulnerable workers in our economy.

"The violation of any one worker's rights is cause for concern to all American workers. When unscrupulous employers abuse vulnerable workers, honest employers and their workers suffer.

"I am proud that, as of Oct. 13, the Labor Department has hired 224 new wage and hour investigators to seek out employers in violation of the law wherever they may be. These investigators are working hard every single day to ensure that every worker is paid at least the minimum wage, that those who work overtime are properly compensated, that child labor laws are strictly enforced and that every worker is provided a safe and healthful environment.

The black tie event is held each year to support the Los Angeles Theatre Center, a world-class arts center for those pursuing artistic excellence, where the convergence of people, cultures, and ideas take place on the LATC's four stages.

The event includes the presentation of the Marco Antonio Firebaugh Legacy Awards, named for the late California State Assemblyman and advocate for education for all. The honorees this year are the Honorable Hilda Solis, United States Secretary of Labor; and Castulo de la Rocha, President and CEO of AltaMed Health Services and Jimmy Smits, Actor/Producer.

A cocktail reception commences at 6 p.m., followed by a gourmet dinner at 7 p.m., succeeded by the main program at 8 p.m.

"I am honored that a Latina holds the position of Secretary of Labor and hope this will create more jobs for all women," said LULAC National Vice President for Women Regla Gonzalez.

Secretary Solis was confirmed on Feb. 24, 2009. Prior to her confirmation, she represented the 32nd Congressional District of California in the House of Representatives, a position she held from 2001 to 2009. Her priorities in Congress included expanding access to affordable health care, protecting the environment and improving the lives of working families. She also authored the Green Jobs Act to provide funding for "green collar” job training for veterans, displaced workers, at risk youth, and working class families.

This year’s LULAC convention will bring much-needed relief for thousands of unemployed Puerto Ricans by hosting the largest job fair since the event was established decades ago. The fair will be open to all from Wednesday, July 15 to Friday, July 17. Job applicants will be able to interview with government agency recruiters for available job openings.
