32nd Annual National Hispanic Women’s Conference Draws Sold Out Audience

Tags: , , , , , ,

“The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF), the nation’s largest Latino-serving, social-service organization, honored Latina business and community leaders at the 32nd annual National Hispanic Women’s Conference, held June 6 at the Pasadena Convention Center. The sold out event brought together over 1,500 Latina students and young professionals for an array of professional development and networking opportunities.

MAOF Board Chair the Honorable Judge Teresa Sanchez Gordon and MAOF President & CEO Martin Castro greeted the largely high school and college student audience in attendance with opening remarks. Later, participants were treated to a host of workshops on subjects such as financial aid for college and building a healthy body image. Workshops presenters included acclaimed author Louis Barajas and guest speaker Rep. Hilda Solis (D-Calif.). Over thirty exhibitors filled the Career Fair and Business Expo; exhibits ranged from job opportunities at URS-Washington Division to beauty makeovers by Macy’s.

The highlight of the day’s events was the Women of the Year Awards Luncheon and Fashion Show sponsored by conference title sponsor, Macy’s. Mistress of ceremonies and Univision Television & Radio personality Argelia Atilano introduced the award recipients: Gloria Santona, Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary, McDonald’s Corp.; Margaret Lazo, Senior Vice President, NBC-Universal; and, Dr. Celia C. Ayala, Chief Operating Officer, Los Angeles Universal Preschool. “When young Latinas hear their life story in those of the award recipients, they know that could be them one day,” said Chairwoman Sanchez Gordon.

In attendance were executives and representatives of corporate sponsors from The Coca-Cola Company, JCPenney, Wells Fargo, and AT&T, among others. The award ceremony was capped off with a dazzling, thirty minute runway fashion show of Macy’s’ INC International Concepts(R) summer lineup.

“We were delighted to see over 1,500 Latina students and young professionals at the 2008 NHWC. Despite high gas prices, this year’s NHWC attracted more college students and young professionals than ever before. We look forward to building on our success in 2009,” said MAOF President & CEO Martin Castro.

HITN, the First National Spanish-Language Public Television Network in the U.S., Launched Nationwide Television Show — Destination Casa Blanca 2008: The Latino Voice in the Presidential Election

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

“HITN, the first national Spanish-language public television network in the United States, aired the inaugural broadcast of Destination Casa Blanca 2008: The Washington Perspective Roundtable, on Thursday evening, April 10 at 9pm. The show is hosted by award-winning journalist Marlene Fernández, who welcomed as her first guests Art A. Estopinan, Chief of Staff for Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-18); Mr. William Ramos, Office Director for the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) in DC; Jane Murguía, President & CEO of the National Council of La Raza; and Democratic Congresswoman Hilda Solis (CA-32).

One of the topics of discussion in the inaugural show was the Immigration Backlog. “In July 2007, the Bush Administration raised the naturalization fee application by 66 percent. This fee increase was meant to improve efficiency at USCIS,” said Solis. Solis continued by saying, “Unfortunately, the USCIS is months behind schedule despite these fee increases. The realization of the American dream — including the right to vote — is being unnecessarily delayed for many. These delays are inexcusable and reprehensible. America’s immigration system should be efficient and effective, especially for those abiding by the law and eager to participate in civic society.”

Destination Casa Blanca 2008 was created to focus on Latinos’ needs and concerns unaddressed by the campaigns and not-yet-covered by the mainstream media. HITN will utilize the strong relationships it has with local community-based organizations throughout the country to bring grassroots issues to a national level. Viewers will see leading public policy experts participating in dialogue and debate on matters specific to the Latino community, such as immigration, the economy, health care, and education, as well as social and cultural affairs. “We have a unique opportunity to build a bridge between the candidates’ campaigns and Hispanic communities through the usage of effective multiple media platforms in an unprecedented way.” says José Luis Rodríguez, CEO of HITN.

The English-language program marks the first time in history that a nation-wide television series dedicated solely to issues affecting the Hispanic community will air in over 30 million U.S. households. Breaking away from its traditional Spanish-language programming, the series is designed to facilitate communication between Latinos and the campaign’s staff, many of whom are non-Hispanic. This will give the candidates an opportunity to learn what Latinos think, in the language they understand.

The show will consist of three original broadcasts: Destination Casa Blanca 2008 “One-on-One,” hosted by Marlene Fernández, will eventually air on Wednesdays at 9pm and again at 12am; Destination Casa Blanca 2008: “Newsmakers Roundtable,” hosted by Fernández airs on Thursdays at 9pm and again at 12am; Destination Casa Blanca 2008: “Washington Perspective Roundtable,” hosted by Ray Suarez, airs on Fridays at 9pm and again at 12am. HITN is available on Dish Network; DirectTV; Time Warner Cable (NY, NJ, TX); Comcast (IL, CO); Charter (CA, NV, WA, GA); AT&T U-verse and Verizon FiOs nationwide.

Additionally, clips of the programs will be available on HITN’s website, www.HITN.TV , further stimulating viewer participation and connecting Hispanics to its guests via texting and social networking media, such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. This unprecedented interactive component gives viewers yet another platform to view and interact with those shaping the presidential race. Utilizing expanded and multiple outreach platforms, Destination Casa Blanca 2008 will help create well-informed citizens and increase the participation by Latinos in the quest for the presidency. Never before has there been a political program that brings Latino interests and concerns about presidential politics to the forefront.

According to the Pew Hispanic Center, this year eligible Latino voters will loom as a potential swing vote. Elected officials welcome the show as an opportunity to interact with the community in an effective and proactive manner. “It is very important to educate the Hispanic community to participate in the electoral process so that their voice is heard, Destination Casa Blanca is an important venue through which our community can learn about the civic responsibilities of citizens and the importance of exercising the privileged right to vote,” said Republican Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL - 21).

Hispanics are the fastest growing Ethnic minority comprising 15% of the US Population. In 2007 and 2008, Hispanic voting surged during the primaries which resulted in a significant narrowing of the gap between the two Democratic candidates. “The 46 million Latinos across the country are poised to have a historic impact on the 2008 Presidential election, and their strength has already been seen in record turnouts for the primaries and caucuses. It is being said that Hispanics could be the deciding factor this year, but the only way to make that happen is to get out and vote! By standing together, we will make our voices heard,” adds Democratic Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-12).

With Hispanic voters now looked upon as key arbiters in the nation’s political future, Destination Casa Blanca 2008 is the program that lets the nation know what they are thinking and the questions they have about the future. “*

NCLR Applauds House Passage of the CHAMP Act

Filed under [ Hispanic News ] [ Press Releases ]
Tags: , , , , ,

“Today, the National Council of La Raza NCLR, the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., praised the members of the U.S. House of Representatives who voted to pass the “Children’s Health and Medicare Protection Act” CHAMP Act, H.R. 3162. The bill contains numerous provisions that would expand Latino children’s access to the Children’s Health Insurance Program CHIP, including a long overdue restoration of health coverage access to legal immigrant children and pregnant women.

“We are grateful that the bill maximizes coverage for children, including legal immigrants. Though an anti-immigrant amendment attempted to mischaracterize the immigrant issue in the debate, we are glad to see that fairness prevailed,” said Janet Murguí, NCLR President and CEO. “We have every expectation that final legislation, when reconciled with the Senate bill, will include these important provisions.”

The legal immigrant provisions, which have long had bipartisan support, survived an attack on immigrants which is part of a recent backlash against Latino priorities, including those affecting legal immigrants and U.S. citizens.

“We thank the many members of Congress, including the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, particularly Representatives Hilda Solis D-CA and Xavier Becerra D-CA, for recognizing the unfairness of leaving legal immigrant children and pregnant women behind,” praised Murguí. “With the passage of the CHAMP Act, they demonstrated their commitment to ensure equal health access opportunities for all of America’s children.””

On the Heels of Major Immigration Demonstrations, Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group Release s Opinion Leader Study on Issues Facing U.S. Hispanics - Hispanics praised for strong work ethic and family-oriented values - Discrimination, community isolation, assimilation vs. acculturation and education among key issues

“Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group, a division of the number-one nonfiction media company Discovery Communications, today announced the launch of “Moving Forward: Thought Leaders Share Their Views on Issues Facing U.S. Hispanics,” a study available to the public that provides a rich, and timely exploration of the key issues facing Hispanics in the United States by experts and opinion leaders from across the country.

Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group and GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media embarked on the study in late 2006, speaking to experts and leaders from a range of disciplines including education, public policy, religion, medicine, mental health, law and business to examine the issues and challenges facing Hispanics in the United States today. The study spans a variety of topics including generational and cultural tensions, assimilation versus acculturation, discrimination, politics, bilingualism, and critical challenges for the future.

“Each day we aim to reach a greater understanding of our viewers in order to bring them informative and relevant content that will enrich their lives,” said Luis Silberwasser, senior vice president and general manager, Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group. “We offer this study to the public and our colleagues to provide valuable insight into the fastest growing ethnic demographic in the United States, and to advance discussion on the important issues facing Hispanic families living in this country today.”

A group of 21 thought leaders participated in the study including Congresswoman Hilda Solis, California 32nd Congressional District; Carol Robles-Roman, Deputy Mayor of New York City; Dr. Ron Haskins, Co-Director of the Center on Children and Families, Brookings Institution; Gloria de Leon, Co-Founder and Executive Vice President of the National Hispanic Institute and Dr. Felipe Korzenny, Director of the Center for the Study of Hispanic Marketing Communication, Florida State University.

The thought leaders hailed Hispanics for their strong family values and work ethic, which they say has contributed to the culture of the United States. They expressed concern about the misconceptions and negative stereotypes the media perpetuates. They talked about the importance of holding on to Hispanic heritage through language and how bilingualism is more accepted and more valuable than ever before. The thought leaders also looked to the future and said that the Hispanic community must focus on the importance of education, as well as the preservation of family ties that have made it so strong.

- Hard at Work: Rather than being a drain on social services as so often portrayed, Hispanics are playing a role in reinvigorating areas of the country.”When you look at the statistics, you find that there is virtually no unemployment in the immigrant community. I think it’s very simple. There’s an incredibly strong work ethic, and that work ethic is enhanced by the fact that the people are coming here for jobs and to work. If they couldn’t find jobs and work, they wouldn’t be here.” - Hector Orci, La Agencia de Orci & Asociados - Work vs. Higher Education: While Hispanics’ highly developed work ethic is lauded, the thought leaders in this study also recognize that it can cause problems. In some cases, children are encouraged to work rather than pursue higher education, particularly when immigration status is at issue.”Young Hispanics often look for jobs to help their families, especially if they have not done well in school. They are not thinking of going to or preparing for college. They also fear the related costs of attending college and not being able to attend because they lack legal status or U.S. citizenship. They have different survival priorities than the mainstream youth of this country.” - Ronaldo Cruz, US Conference of Catholic Bishops - Discrimination: Still Very Real: Despite all the talk about a move toward acculturation, integration, and multiculturalism, our thought leaders see discrimination as still being a very real barrier for many Hispanics.”Unlike other immigrants who can blend in more easily, Hispanics are unable to move in and out generally because of their physical appearance and language. Unfortunately in our country, there is a history of racism against those who are different to the general population.” - Francisco Jimenez Ph.D., Ethnic Studies Program Santa Clara University - Community Isolation Fosters Segregation: living in heavily Hispanic and often isolated communities, thought leaders say, can lessen the need to become bilingual or integrate into American culture fostering segregation.”I think language has a lot to do with how a society or population integrates itself and evolves. There has to be a transitional phase that occurs, and if immigrants don’t acquire the community’s dominant language - in this case, English - they can’t benefit from being fully immersed in the community. That’s a source of frustration because it impacts everything: jobs, rental agreements, everything.” - Hilda Solis, Congresswoman, California 32nd Congressional District - Media Messages and Portrayals Both Help and Hurt Hispanics: Too often portrayals are not positive, the diversity is minimized and the contribution to the economy not recognized.”I think it heightens your self-esteem when you, as an individual, see a positive image of your race, culture, and language rather than a negative one. The media does have an impact on Hispanic kids and young adults, especially. And for the traditional people watching, it encourages them to be more understanding of other cultures.” - Jose Nazario, the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families

These and other issues explored in-depth throughout the pages of this study (including Immigration Debate: a Double-Edged Sword, From Media Role Models to the Halls of Power, Two Languages are Better than One, and more) are of great national importance and bring a richness of thought and opinion to the debate.

Hispanics currently make up about 15% of the population of the United States and are the fastest growing and largest ethnic or racial minority in the country. By the year 2050, they are expected to total 24% of the nation’s total population - or more than 100 million people. Congresswoman Hilda Solis Lays Out Top Latino Health Challenges in June Issue of “Médico de Familia’ Magazine

“A tireless advocate for Latino health and the uninsured, Rep. Solis (D-CA) shares her views on the healthcare disparities that affect the Hispanic community as well as her vision for possible solutions in June’s issue of “Médico de Familia,” the Spanish-language healthy-lifestyles magazine written by Hispanic MD’s and distributed in waiting rooms and health fairs around the nation, as well as via www.medicodefamilia.org.

Rep. Solis’ position as Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Task Force on Health and the Environment gives her unique insights on the healthcare challenges that the Hispanic community has to contend with in improving the well-being of its families. In this exclusive article for “Médico de Familia,” she presents her top health issues, which include access to health care for the uninsured, the need for health information in Spanish, obesity/diabetes, smoking, HIV/AIDS and the lack of representation of Hispanics in healthcare provider roles.

“We are glad that Congresswoman Solis has chosen “Médico de Familia’ as a venue to underscore the importance of these crucial issues,” said Publisher Neil Porter. “One of them ”” access to health information in Spanish ”” is in fact Médico’s core mission.”

One of Rep. Solis’ top priorities is the reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which was created in 1997 to provide health insurance to children who do not qualify for Medicaid. Without reauthorization by Congress, federal funding for this program will end in September.

“One out of three Latinos lacks health insurance,” the Congresswoman notes in the article. “Lack of insurance results in reduced access to care, which means that people are less likely to receive health services or receive services at the right time.”

About “Médico de Familia’

National Council of La Raza Joins with Rep. Hilda Solis and National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy to Launch New Latino Initiative

“The National Council of La Raza NCLR, the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., will partner with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy on a new education and outreach initiative aimed at Latino teens and young adults. The launch of the new initiative was announced today at a news conference on Capitol Hill featuring Representative Hilda Solis D-CA.

“Nearly half of Latinas become pregnant before age 20. High teen pregnancy rates are robbing our young women of too many opportunities – the opportunity to go to college, the opportunity to start a rewarding career, and the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of a better future,” stated Janet Murguí, NCLR President and CEO.

“Unplanned and unprotected sex also poses serious health risks for Latinas. That’s why we welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with Representative Solis and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy on this issue,” continued Murguí.

“The National Campaign has been a key leader in the successful effort to reduce overall teen pregnancy rates in our country. The new Latino initiative will build on this track record of success and zero in on the specific themes, messages, and approaches we need to reach Hispanic young people, especially those overlooked by traditional mainstream efforts,” Murguí said.

“We commend Representative Solis for her passion and leadership on this issue. I can think of no better champion than Hilda Solis to spearhead our efforts on Capitol Hill,” noted Murguí.

“The National Campaign has involved Hispanic community-based organizations and substantive experts at every phase, and on every level, of this campaign. They’re going about this exactly the right way, which gives me great confidence that we can successfully reverse the teen pregnancy crisis in our community,” concluded Murguí.”

National Council of La Raza Applauds Introduction of “Citizenship Promotion Act of 2007”

“The National Council of La Raza NCLR, the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., applauds the introduction today of the “Citizenship Promotion Act of 2007 ” by Senators Barack Obama D-IL, Robert Menendez D-NJ, Ken Salazar D-CO, and Jeff Bingaman D-NM and Representatives Luis Gutierrez D-IL, Jan Schakowsky D-IL, Mike Honda D-CA, Neil Abercrombie D-HI, Hilda Solis D-CA, Ed Pastor D-AZ, and Raul Grijalva D-AZ.

“Promoting citizenship must be a priority for the United States. Citizenship is the key to fulfilling the American Dream and full participation in our democracy,” stated Janet Murguí, NCLR President and CEO. “We need to do everything possible to ensure that all eligible legal immigrants have fair and equal access to the citizenship process, and we applaud Senator Obama and Representative Gutierrez for their leadership on this important issue.”

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services USCIS recently announced that it would be raising the application fees for naturalization applications and other immigration benefits by a significant amount, with some fees more than doubling.

“These fee increases and other measures are placing clear and unwarranted obstacles in front of legal immigrants eager and ready to become U.S. citizens. We ought to be promoting citizenship, not making it more difficult,” continued Murguí.

The “Citizenship Promotion Act of 2007” would encourage naturalization, maintain naturalization fees at their current level, allow Congress to appropriate funds for USCIS to improve its infrastructure, create a National Citizenship Promotion Program, reduce the amount of time applicants must wait for background checks to be completed, and ensure that naturalization applicants will not be forced to use expensive electronic filing systems. NCLR will work with coalition partners throughout the country to promote passage of the “Citizenship Promotion Act” this year.”
