Hector Elizondo: Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Dementia

Tags: ,

“For Emmy-award winning actor Hector Elizondo, the challenges of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s dementia are very personal. In the 1960s, Elizondo’s mother was afflicted with Alzheimer’s dementia, a degenerative disease that alters the brain, causing impaired thinking, memory, and attention.

For Elizondo’s father, the primary caregiver, taking care of his wife was a 24/7 commitment. Although the family was willing to do whatever it took to care for Hector’s mother, the demands coupled with unpredictable days were physically exhausting. Back then, there weren’t any treatment options to help with the worsening of Elizondo’s mother’s symptoms. The lack of caregiver support resources brought emotional chaos and physical exhaustion to Elizondo’s father, and his health eventually declined.

“While my family had nowhere to turn, it is important for today’s caregivers to recognize that they now have access to medical treatments, educational information and resources that can help,” said Elizondo. “I encourage caregivers to visit www.CaringForAlz.com, an online resource from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, for information that can provide answers to common caregiver challenges. The resources may also offer stability to those caring for loved ones with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia, and put them in touch with a community of caregivers, so they know they are not alone.”

Today, more than five million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, many of whom are in the mild to moderate stages of the disease. Additionally, nearly 10 million Americans provide unpaid care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. As the disease can present unpredictable challenges on a daily — or even hourly — basis, caring for a person with Alzheimer’s dementia is often very difficult. However, while medical treatment options did not exist in the 1960s, recent advances may help today’s patients.

“Fortunately today, patients have access to the latest medical treatments, such as the Exelon(R)Patch (rivastigmine transdermal system), which is the first and only skin patch for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia,” said Dr. Gus Alva, director of ATP Clinical Research in Costa Mesa, Calif. “By providing continuous delivery of rivastigmine over 24 hours, Exelon Patch represents a different treatment option for people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia.”

For more information about caring for a loved with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia and treatment options, visit www.CaringForAlz.com.

Emmy-award winning actor, Hector Elizondo, has appeared in more than 80 motion pictures and made-for-TV movies, as well as critically-acclaimed TV series, such as Chicago Hope and Cane. He is currently featured in the Golden Globe Award-winning USA Networks series, MONK. “

“Joining the close-knit cast of a show that’s been on the air for six years is tough, especially if you’re replacing an actor who just passed away.

But that didn’t scare off Hector Elizondo. He’ll star in season seven of “Monk,” beginning Friday on USA, taking over the role of Adrian Monk’s psychiatrist from Stanley Kamel, who died of a heart attack in April. “*

‘Cane’ actor feels show makes strides - Nestor Carbonell

“Nestor Carbonell is part of a big-name cast on the CBS drama “Cane” that has one thing in common: The leads are almost all Latino.

There’s Emmy-winner Jimmy Smits, Emmy-winner Hector Elizondo and Oscar-winner Rita Moreno, among others.

“I’m so thrilled,” Nestor said when we chatted last week. “You always hope that strides are made, and I feel they certainly have been. Even before `Suddenly Susan,’ when I started (in 1996), the kinds of roles that were open to Latinos are nothing like there are today.”"*

“Jimmy Smits has starred in some of television’s most acclaimed series from L.A. Law to NYPD Blue to The West Wing. Previously to be found in supporting-actor roles, Smits takes center stage in Cane, a new drama from CBS Paramount Network Television. In the series, which Smits is also co-executive-producing, he plays Alex Vega, the adopted son of an affluent Cuban American family that runs a sugar-and-rum empire in Florida. With a cast that includes Hector Elizondo as Pancho, the ailing family patriarch who chooses Alex as his heir over his biological sons; Rita Moreno as Pancho’s wife Amalia and Nestor Carbonell as Alex’s resentful brother Frank, the series has the weight of CBS’s marketing machine behind it. Smits talks to World Screen about his hopes for the show.”*

Sugar & Spice: New series is like a steamy ‘Dynasty’ — but with mojitos - (more on Cane)

“They’ve done everything they can to make it authentic, from hiring a dialect coach to ensure Spanish is spoken with a Havana accent to making hundreds of expensive color photocopies of Cuban tile to dress the set walls.

But, the producers of Cane — the new CBS series about a family of Cuban-exile sugar barons in South Florida — warn that their show is ultimately a drama, not a documentary.

”I hope Cubans like it. I hope they’re proud,” says Cane creator Cynthia Cidre, herself an exile from Little Havana. “I’m Cuban. But it has to appeal to the whole country, not just Miami.”

Cane — which debuted Tuesday on WFOR-CBS 4 — has stirred intense interest in South Florida since its May announcement. It’s the first prime time drama on a broadcast network about not just a Cuban family but a Latin family of any kind. And it’s coming to America’s top-rated network with an all-star cast that includes Jimmy Smits, Rita Moreno, Hector Elizondo and Nestor Carbonell.”

Even top Latino talent can’t raise ‘Cane’

“You can put a weak old rum in a bright new bottle, but you’ll still get a lousy drink.

One of TV’s all-too-frequent attempts to pass off a moldy idea as a fresh new concept, Cane takes your standard-issue family-dynasty soap and tries to give it a Cuban spin ””Dallas by way of Little Havana. Latinos of all stripes are absurdly underserved by network TV, but surely they deserve a more potent cocktail than Cane.

Yet the show does have one saving grace, beyond fulfilling its target audience’s natural desire to see themselves represented on screen. Leading an otherwise hit-and-miss ensemble are three truly wonderful actors, Jimmy Smits, Hector Elizondo and Rita Moreno. You can’t help rooting for them even when the show is failing them and, in Smits’ case, when he’s failing the show.”

Jimmy Smits drama Cane shows promise on CBS

Tags: , , , , ,

“This season, CBS is giving drama another shot with “Cane,” a slick and earnest soap about rival families in southern Florida. One makes sugar and rum; the other makes trouble. And presiding over it all is the ever-capable Jimmy Smits, who has been around long enough to play a world-weary heavyweight rather than the affable hunk of roles past. The show will sink or swim on his broad shoulders, and early indications are reasonably promising.

Despite the title, there is actually nobody named Cane here. The primary clan here is the Duques, a Cuban-American family headed by patriarch Pancho (Hector Elizondo) and matriarch Amalia (Rita Moreno, still breathing fire). They have an ambitious son, Frank (Nestor Carbonell), who sees as his birthright the assumption of their mega-successful rum and sugar empire. Frank is locked in a power struggle with Alex Vega (Smits), Pancho’s son-in-law who married into the business via his daughter Isabel (Paola Turbay), while youngest son Henry (Eddie Matos) is content to stay on the sidelines and away from the battle.”

World Premiere & PBS Broadcast of The Borinqueneers

Tags: , , , , , ,

“The experience of Latinos in the U.S. Army has rarely been portrayed in film. Now comes The Borinqueneers pronounced Boh-rin-keh-neers, the never-before-told story of the 65th Puerto Rican Regiment, the only all-Hispanic unit in the history of the U.S. Army. Narrated by Hector Elizondo Chicago Hope, Pretty Woman, this compelling 78-minute documentary relies on interviews with the regiments veterans and rare archival footage to trace the unique experience of the 65th, culminating in the Korean War and the dramatic events that would threaten its very existence. The world premiere screening will take place on July 13th at the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ, with other screenings scheduled in various other cities. PBS stations nationwide will begin broadcasting a one-hour version of the program in August check local listings.

Named after “Borinquen,” the word given to Puerto Rico by its original inhabitants, the Taino Indians, the Borinqueneers formed a tight-knit unit bound by a common language and a strong cultural identity. First-time director and producer Noemí Figueroa Soulet spent eight years researching the story and locating veterans of the regiment, some of whom have since passed away. Through their voices, the documentary explores the unique history of the 65th Regiment and illustrates many of the issues surrounding the U.S. relationship with Puerto Rico and the broader Latino experience. “Puerto Ricans occupy a very special place in the history of the U.S. Army,” says Figueroa Soulet. “As a former colony and now a commonwealth, we dont have the right to vote in U.S. elections, and yet we serve in the military and we can be drafted.”

In 1950, the men of the 65th finally had the opportunity to prove their mettle in the Korean War. In spite of the prejudice that was still the norm in the Army, they performed impressively during the first years of the war, even earning kudos from General MacArthur. “I was glad that the Puerto Ricans were on my side,” says Colonel Willis Cronkhite, a 65th company commander.

But as the Korean War bogged down into a stalemate, the regiment felt the full weight of the new “hold at all costs” strategy, losing many of its men in impossible missions. In October of 1952, several companies were sent to defend a barren outpost against overwhelming enemy fire. Following a massive mortar barrage, several dozen men abandoned their positions. Wrapped in mystery and controversy to this day, the real story of what happened has never been told until now.

More than ninety Puerto Rican soldiers were tried in one of the largest courts-martial of the Korean War. The Borinqueneers uncovers the circumstances surrounding the dramatic events of 1952 and explores the rich history of the 65th Puerto Rican Regiment
