Guillermo del Toro to Remake Pinocchio
Video: Wise Words From Guillermo Del Toro | Blogamole
MTV News caught up with Del Toro to talk about the next phase of Hellboy, Barry Manilow, and when it’s okay to sleep around. Take a look at all the wise advice we got from the Hobbit master himself:”*
Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro credits Mexican heritage for his artistic vision
“How could I not be a Mexican filmmaker? If I endeavoured not to be, I would not succeed because I was raised in Mexico. I heard all the legends. I drank all the drinks. I ate all the foods. I walked on the streets. The idiosyncracies of my country are in me, not in my passport, not in my sense of geography. They are in my gut, in my head, everywhere,” del Toro says during an interview at the Four Seasons Hotel to discuss his new movie Hellboy II: The Golden Army.”*
Spanish producers making waves - A handful of titles in Cannes’ boasts Spanish coin
Recent editions of the Festival de Cannes have trumpeted the creativity of Spanish-language films and filmmakers. Pedro Almodovar’s “Volver,” Alejandro Inarritu’s “Babel,” Juan Antonio Bayona’s “The Orphanage” and Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” documented the burgeoning talent on tap in Spain and Latin America. But this year’s selection speaks to a new trend — Spanish producers making waves.
A handful of titles in Cannes’ official selection boasts Spanish coin wed to an international A-list director. Barcelona-based Mediapro’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” directed by Woody Allen, and Telecinco Cinema and Morena Films’ two-part, four-hour “Che,” directed by Steven Soderbergh, are indicative of Spanish producers’ talent for nurturing potential hits.”*
Guillermo Del Toro in talks to helm Hobbit films
Director Guillermo Del Toro is in talks to direct two movies based on JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Del Toro’s name was on a short list of potential directors, to bring the book to the big screen.
The Mexican director is no stranger to fantasy picking up an Oscar nomination for Pan’s Labyrinth.”*

Rising Spanish director debuts with The Orphanage in US
As a movie-obsessed teenager, Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona snuck into a film festival masquerading as a journalist to catch the eye of award-winning Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Fast forward 15 years and Bayona’s early panache has paid off handsomely in The Orphanage, a supernatural thriller produced by Del Toro fresh off his 2006 hit Pan’s Labyrinth, which earned three Oscars and was Mexico’s nominee for best foreign language film. “Guillermo thought I was a 10-year-old with sideburns,” said Bayona of his first meeting with del Toro. “We kept in touch (and) he loved my work in music videos and short films.””*

Mexican films earn reputation for quality
“With 16 Oscar nominations for “Babel” (directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu), “Pan’s Labyrinth” (directed and written by Guillermo Del Toro) and “Children of Men” (directed and co-written by Alfonso Cuarón), Hollywood unofficially declared 2007 the Year of the Mexican Filmmaker. With impressive storytelling and powerful use of cinematography, set design and locations, the films showed a striking new era of artistic maturity and ambition.
These filmmakers were not only good friends but collaborators, helping each other launch new projects and build new systems of production in Mexico through a five-film, $100 million deal with Universal Pictures. The label “Made in Mexico” promises to be a hallmark of quality.”*
GUILLERMO DEL TORO TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS
“When I was on the set of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Guillermo del Toro whipped out his laptop and showed me some footage from the Troll Market set. In the background of one scene was a couple of guys in green body suits walking formation. ‘That,’ Guillermo said. ‘Is going to be a Lovecraftian monster.’
Lovecraft’s been on his mind for years now; that’s how long he’s been trying to get At the Mountains of Madness off the ground. At one point it looked pretty good for Warner Bros, but now Latino Review is saying they’ve heard (and you can take this to the bank, as Kelvin at Latino Review is in tight with Guillermo) that Universal is getting the film, and that it’ll be Guillermo’s next.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Latino Power 50
“Following is The Hollywood Reporter’s first Latino Power 50 list, a guide to those writers, producers, directors, actors and executives who, through their ideas, perspectives and experiences, are changing show business as we know it.
In selecting the Latino Power 50, The Hollywood Reporter has focused exclusively on behind-the-scenes players within the film and TV industries and only included performers when they also are active as producers. The list does not include the many major figures working entirely within the Spanish-speaking world — either in Spain or Latin America or in the Spanish-language TV networks within the U.S. Nor does it include those working in the music arena.”
Here is a list of the top ten:
1. Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro (writer-director-producers).

“The price tag: as much as US$100 million.
Merging their talents and newfound clout are Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu, who, in taking this initiative, are seeking the kind of creative control and ownership over their work that few filmmakers enjoy.”
“Grindhouse” Star says Power Latinos Index Up - Freddy Rodriguez
“A real standout in “Grindhouse” is actor Freddy Rodriguez and the cheers he’s been getting from movie audiences is sweet music to his ears. “Things have definitely changed for people of ethnicity in the entertainment industry. I mean look at the Oscars and how many Latin writers, actors and directors were nominated. I don’t think I’ve seen that before. There is a wave of Mexican directors like Alfonso Cuaron “Little Children” and Guillermo Del Toro “Babel” and Salma Hayek having her own television show “Ugly Betty” to Robert Rodriguez owning his own studio. Things are changing for Latinos in the industry and I’m a product of that.””
Felipe Cazals: the conscience of Mexican cinema
“A singular Mexican filmmaker has been getting lots of attention here lately. Whats shocking is that his name isnt Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro or Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Back in the late 1970s, when the so-called Three Amigos were in high school, director Felipe Cazals was busy pushing cultural hot buttons and flaying cinematic sacred cows. He was part of a group of Young Turks, akin to the Coppola-Scorsese-Spielberg troika, that helped lift Mexican cinema from the slough of institutional mediocrity that had followed its Golden Age of the 1930s through the 1950s.”
“Three amigos” seek support for Mexican film biz
“Mexican directors Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Alfonso Cuaron, fresh off a raft of awards season accolades, have met with Mexicos new president to urge more support for the struggling national film industry.
The so-called “three amigos” said on a Tuesday news program that they recently met with President Felipe Calderon in a bid to garner more backing for the industry. They added that they plan to meet with lawmakers Wednesday.”

Oscar vignettes: Mexican directors poke fun at their haul of Oscar nominations, more
“Mexican directors Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Alfonso Cuaron shook up Oscar night with an incredible 16 nominations between them, leading some to compare the group to another trio of renowned filmmakers: Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas and John Ford.
Del Toro, for one, wasnt buying it.
“I was thinking more like Larry, Curly and Moe,” joked the director, whose film “Pans Labyrinth” garnered six nominations, including foreign-language film and screenplay.”
Mexican film industry enjoys ‘bittersweet’ success
“The budding filmmakers at the INDIE film school prop up a fishing boat in a grassy field. Working with a professional crew, they use special effects to turn that field into a stormy sea for the low-budget narco-drama “Malverde.”
The 20-something students aspire to join an exploding Mexican film industry, including directors Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu “Babel” and Guillermo Del Toro “Pans Labyrinth” and actors Salma Hayek “Frida” and Gael Garcia Bernal “The Science of Sleep”.”
Pan’s Labyrinth Wins First 2 Oscars (ends up winning a 3rd for Cinematography)
“The savage fairy tale “Pan’s Labyrinth” took the first two Academy Awards on Sunday, for art direction and makeup, the wins for the Spanish-language film kicking off an Oscar evening stuffed with contenders from around the globe.
“To Guillermo del Toro for guiding us through this labyrinth,” said art director Eugenio Caballero, lauding the writer-director of “Pans Labyrinth,” the tale of a girl who concocts an elaborate fantasy world to escape her harsh reality in 1940s Fascist Spain. “
