Yahoo! Sin Senos No Hay Paraíso (literally, Without Breasts There Is No Paradise), is a Spanish-language telenovela that debuted on Telemundo on July 16. A hit in Colombia, the telenovela tells the story of an attractive young prostitute who seeks massive breast implants to attract a rich cocaine smuggler. The show was one of the network’s most-watched premieres ever and, not surprisingly, nabbed this month’s number one spot on the Top 10 Overall Searches. Also topping the list was a group of beautiful women, including Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza, Italian actress Monica Bellucci, and Aracely Arambula, who just announced she is pregnant with boyfriend Luis Miguel’s second child. Rounding out the list was former FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) captive Ingrid Betancourt, whose recent rescue after six-and-a-half years of captivity created a worldwide media frenzy.

A survey published by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 24% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 50 have a tattoo.
Victoria’s Secret Supermodel Adriana Lima, an ever-popular name on the Top Searches lists, is still making headlines after it was announced that she and basketball star boyfriend, Marko Jaric of the Minnesota Timberwolves, will be tying the knot. Following in Lima’s footsteps – four more models were among the most searched for images in July: British lingerie model (and reality TV star) Gemma Atkinson; Uruguayan-Mexican actress/model Barbara Mori, star of the hit telenovela remake, Rubi; as well as model Isabel Madow, known for her appearances on the Mexican edition of Big Brother VIP. In the number four slot, Puerto Rican Reggaeton star Don Omar has been cleared of all drug and weapons charges in relation to an incident dating back to 2004.The 30-year-old has been on trial in a court in Carolina, Puerto Rico for the last two weeks, after he was arrested in September 2004 by drug enforcement officers, who claim to have found him and two pals smoking marijuana. Portuguese footballer and heartthrob Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plays for Manchester United, has also generated interest amidst speculation about a move to Real Madrid. Raid on meat plant haunts town, sparks debate - Postville
Tags: Guatemala, Guatemalan, Postville raid
There is a small-town stillness here, neat houses and kids riding bicycles down quiet, leafy streets. But in the Guatemalan bakery, in church pews, at the meatpacking plant and the kosher deli, the strained voices almost always dwell on the raid that changed everything.
The stillness is not serenity. It’s shock. “*

Two-year-old Martin, a young Guatemalan, was found abandoned in an Frankfort, Indiana Wal-Mart store on Friday, June 13.
In the note found with Martin, his mother states that the young family arrived a year ago from Guatemala. It wasn’t long afterwards that her husband left her. According to the letter written in Spanish, the mother doesn’t have the means to buy her son food or provide a roof over his head.
So, she did what has been done by millions of women around the world since the beginning of time, or at least as far back as Moses, she left him at a place she knew to be relatively safe. Where there were people, fellow mothers, who would find him, protect him and help him.”*

This summer, Latino artists, comedians and entertainers are in the spotlight in the country’s top travel destination: Las Vegas. Visitors from around the world are flocking to the Strip at the height of travel season to see award-winning musical talents such as Juanes, Ozomatli and Camila, as well as comedians like Carlos Mencia and George Lopez. In a city already known for world-class entertainment, these Latino acts are drawing sellout crowds.
Recently, Carlos Mencia, the Honduran-born host of Comedy Central’s “Mind of Mencia” showcased his comedy at Pearl Concert Theater at The Palms Casino Resort; while Juanes, a three-time Latin Grammy-winning Colombian artist was at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Ozomatli, the Grammy-winning Latin fusion band, performed poolside at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino; Camila, the hit Mexican band, prepares for their live performance at The Joint (also at the Hard Rock) on June 20. The Grammy-nominated Mexican trio’s third single, Todo Cambió, recently reached the #1 spot of Mexico’s Top 100 Singles Chart.
The Strip is already preparing for Mexican Independence Day. Already lined up for the weekend, September 12-15, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is Luis Miguel. Leading Latin Pop Star Alejandro Fernández brings his new tour “VIENTO A FAVOR” to the Mandalay Bay Events Center Monday, Sept. 15. Las Vegas has redefined the culinary and wine experience by offering world-class restaurants, more Master Sommeliers than any other city in the world, more wine sold per capita than in any other destination and the most comprehensive collection of celebrity chefs including Guatemalan native Eduardo Perez, who command their own fan base of fine diners and culinary enthusiasts. Perez worked his way up within the renowned Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group family, and is now the executive chef of Trattoria del Lupo at Mandalay Bay.
As the dining scene evolves in Las Vegas, new restaurants continue to open nearly every month, providing unique experiences for repeat visitors. Some of the many new restaurants include: Mario Batali’s first steakhouse Carnevino and fiery Brazilian SUSHISAMBA in The Palazzo, Payard Pâtisserie & Bistro at Caesars Palace, DJT in Trump International Hotel and Tower, RUB BBQ inside the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Kerry Simon’s Simon at Palms Place and Hard Rock Hotel’s AGO. Blueberries, Bullets and Blood-Soaked Bananas: The Violence of Free Trade in Guatemala

Less than 24 hours after President Bush met with Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom at the White House on Monday, a worker from a union that filed a trade complaint with Washington against the Guatemalan government was murdered.
Carlos Enrique Cruz Hernández, a banana worker, was assassinated while working at a farm owned by a subsidiary of Del Monte. Cruz Hernández’s Union of Izabal Banana Workers (SITRABI), was one of six Guatemalan unions who, along with the AFL-CIO, filed a complaint allowed through labor provisions of the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) on April 23, charging that the Guatemalan government was not upholding its labor laws and was failing to investigate and prosecute crimes against union members–which include rape and murder. The complaint states that violence against trade unionists has increased over the past two years (since CAFTA was ratified) and that the Guatemalan government may be responsible for some of the violence. The violence includes 8 murders, 1 attempted murder, 2 drive-by shootings, and the kidnapping and gang rape of a top union official’s daughter who was targeted because of her father’s union work.”*

The Juan Bautista Gutierrez Foundation (Fundacion Juan Bautista Gutierrez), a charitable foundation formed by the shareholders of Corporacion Multi Inversiones to promote various education, health and social projects in Guatemala, today announced the launch of its 7th annual “Apoyando a Quienes Apoyan” (”Supporting Those Who Support”).
The contest publicly recognizes and honors the efforts of organizations dedicated to improving health and education in Guatemala. With the prize money, the organizations can continue with their social projects to benefit the Guatemalans who need it the most. Proposals will be accepted through May 16, with the winners to be announced during a gala event on August 21.

Isabel Gutierrez de Bosch who is the daughter of the Foundation namesake, Juan Bautista Gutierrez, has been dedicated to social work for more than 50 years. She has followed her father’s footsteps and is fully committed to improving living conditions for Guatemalans. “Since the inaugural competition six years ago, the Foundation has donated 8.7 million quetzals, (US$1 million) to 46 different organizations benefiting more than 380,000 Guatemalans,” added Isabel Gutierrez de Bosch. “Now in its seventh year, Apoyando a Quienes Apoyan can continue its tremendous impact in Guatemala.”

An Illegal Immigrant’s Legal Paradox - Paying Child Support Means Breaking the Law
Tags: Guatemala, Guatemalan, judge, prince william county
The way Jaime R. Villagran tells it, to avoid going to jail, he would have had to break one law to obey another.
The Guatemalan native acknowledged that he owed more than $11,000 in child support when he appeared last month in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. But to pay it, Villagran told the judge, he would have to work illegally because he was awaiting permanent residency and work authorization from the U.S. government. He refused to do that.
“Were I to go to work and get caught, then what? I would have nothing,” Villagran, 33, of Prince William County, said in the Fairfax jail. “If they deported me, there are two kids with no dad, no money. Who’s going to be paying for what they need in the future?”"*

LOS TIGRES DEL NORTE’s RAICES (‘Roots’) Will Debut At #1 On The “Top Latin Albums” Chart
Tags: Guatemala, Guatemalan, los tigres del norte, Mexico, radio, San Jose, Theater
After Recently Garnering The Best Norteño Album GRAMMY Award For The Second-Consecutive Year, The World’s “most influential regional Mexican group” Continues To Demonstrate Their Role As Genre Leaders By Adding Yet Another #1 Debut To Their Legendary Career Tally.
While Los Tigres del Norte Has Always Given Voice To The Most Pressing Issues of The Day Facing The Immigrant Community, They Have Also Been Guardians Of Mexican & Mexican-American Cultural History. With The Appropriately Named Raices - The First Of Two Los Tigres del Norte Albums Planned For Release This Year - The Legendary Musicians Honor The Best Of That Heritage With Newly Recorded Versions Of Classic Mexican Songs.
With The Top Latin Album In The Country, Los Tigres Is Also Once Again Racing Up The Radio Chart, As The Album’s First Single “Rumbo al Sur” Has Jumped to #7 On Billboard’s “Hot Latin Songs” Chart
“Los Tigres del Norte/Raices … unequivocally the most important norteño band of the last 40 years… Leader Jorge Hernandez, along with his brothers and cousin, continues to have such command of the genre’s stylings. Listen to numbers such as “El Rey” and “El Hijo del Pueblo” for a lesson on how to communicate a norteño tune filled with organic accordion riffs and plenty of lyrical power. On “El Golpe Traidor” we get pure ranchera anguish. Then on “Sangre Caliente” we witness motherland pride amidst a jaunty beat. Los Tigres are no novices to the romantic bolero, the classic Latin ballads of a bygone era. They usually include at least one on each CD release. Here we have two, the reflective “Cien Años” and the mournful “Sin Ti.” In both cases, the Norte men expertly merge accordion-fueled countryside instrumentation with saxophone-smooth city elegance, especially in the silky vocals. The results enhance their repertoire… Los Tigres del Norte aren’t the only norteño band on the scene these days… But you could always pick them out of the line-up. They are the only norteño group that really matters.” – Dallas Morning News, 3/11/08
- Look For Los Tigres Del Norte To Play For Over 17,000 Hometown Fans On March 22nd in San Jose, Followed By A March 28th Los Angeles Show At The Gibson Amphitheater
“… New Times asks a few migrants a question: Does anyone have an experience worthy of a Tigres song? Most of the men stare at their feet, shifting a little. Then a Guatemalan named Freddy grins, “I do,” he says, and tells of his 15-day journey from Guatemala, through Mexico, and across the Rio Grande. Mexican migrant Enrique shakes his head and intercepts: “Dude, Los Tigres already did that one. It was ‘Tres Veces Mojado’… With a career spanning four decades and 55 albums, this multiple-Grammy-winning band has turned nearly every story into song. So it’s little wonder last year’s Grammy was a Lifetime Achievement Award… their upcoming release, Raices, is an effort to recapture classic Mexican songs…‘We hope that when people have this CD, they feel like we do. It’s a way to identify with your people, roots, customs, and experiences.’… Back in Homestead, New Times is still curious to know whose story might make for a Tigres ballad. Prying produces only pursed lips from the migrants, until Enrique finally speaks up again: “Illegals don’t have any stories to tell, remember?’… So Los Tigres tell the stories you all can’t?’ asks New Times. ‘You got that right,’ Enrique replies.”
