“In the next few weeks we will see important, positive events regarding the Hispanic community.

First of all, many in the Hispanic community will welcome a Spanish-language newspaper called La Gazeta. La Gazeta is being launched by an organization called El Hispano, according to Julio Reyes, general manager of La Gazeta newspaper.

“It is a dream come true,” Reyes said. Also, he mentioned that La Gazeta will be an important tool of information and support for Hispanics. This newspaper has been in existence for seven years in Green Bay and in Appleton where it has been very successful. La Gazeta newspaper has 90 percent of the content published in Spanish.”

Amparo Baudhuin, an immigration counselor at Catholic Charities of Green Bay, hears many sad stories from immigrants ripped off in scams promising them legal U.S. residency.

The stories usually begin with illegal immigrants meeting people claiming to be authorized immigration service employees. The fake officials usually gain immigrants’ trust, promising them help in becoming legal residents, and eventually collecting money from them.

Green Bay police say 16-month-old Merado Arellana died when he was thrown out of an SUV after a crash Thursday. His two-year-old sister and a woman in the SUV were taken to a hospital with serious injuries after colliding with a car at the intersection of University Avenue and Henry Street.

Police think one of the vehicles ignored traffic lights, but they say a language barrier is slowing down the investigation. Neither child in the SUV was in a safety seat.

Brown County’s Hispanic population grew by 3,410 ”” from 8,655 in 2000 to 12,065 in 2004. Most of the Hispanics are of Mexican ancestry and most are concentrated in Green Bay.

“When I first came here (to Green Bay) in the mid-’70s, you didn’t see any Hispanics living here, but isn’t like that anymore,” Rosemary Carter said. “I think this (parade) is a good thing for the city. I like learning about other cultures, which is why I’m here.”
