GRAMMY®- and Latin GRAMMY®-winning international superstar Gloria Estefan will be honored as the 2008 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year, it was announced today by The Latin Recording Academy®. Estefan was chosen for her philanthropic, professional and cultural accomplishments and will receive the honor at a star-studded concert and tribute dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. A portion of the proceeds from the evening’s tribute dinner will benefit the Gloria Estefan Foundation as well as St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The prestigious event will be produced by 13-time GRAMMY winner Phil Ramone and will precede the 9th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, which will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston on Thursday, Nov. 13, and will be broadcast live on the Univision Television Network at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central.
“The Latin Recording Academy and its Board of Trustees are elated to recognize Gloria Estefan as an extraordinary Latina woman, humanitarian and talented musician who has made a global impact on music and culture,” said Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa. “She is one of Latin music’s most enduring icons, and we are privileged to be honoring such a dedicated, generous, and gifted lady.”
Estefan has been a force within the music industry for three decades with 22 albums and more than 90 million records sold. She began her career collaborating with the Miami Latin Boys band. Estefan became an integral part of the band and was essential in creating the group’s new sound and by 1980, she and the group became known as Miami Sound Machine and were signed to a record label. They went on to release albums such as Primitive Love, which sold more than 3 million units in the United States alone and produced the hit singles “Bad Boy,” “Words Get In The Way” and “Conga.” The next two albums, Let It Loose (1987) and Cuts Both Ways (1989), were both worldwide chart-topping sensations, and produced such hits as “Can’t Stay Away From You,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Anything For You,” “1-2-3,” “Don’t Wanna Lose You,” and “Get On Your Feet.”
After a bus accident that left her partially paralyzed in March 1990, Estefan, against all odds, triumphantly returned to the stage with a 17-country tour and her chart-topping album, Into The Night. In 1993 she returned to her Latin music roots and released Mi Tierra, which garnered Estefan her first GRAMMY Award. She performed the official theme song, “Reach,” at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, which became the first single from a new English-language album Destiny. Released in 2001, Alma Caribeña earned Estefan a GRAMMY Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album and a Latin GRAMMY for Best Short Form Music Video. Her most recent album, 90 Millas, pays tribute to the roots of Cuban music and gave Estefan the opportunity to work with fellow legendary artists such as Sheila E., Andy García, Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Johnny Pacheco, Carlos Santana, and many others.
Not only is Estefan an award-winning singer/songwriter and musician, she is also a compassionate philanthropist who established the Gloria Estefan Foundation, which aims to promote good health, education and cultural development. One of the main benefactors of the Gloria Estefan Foundation is the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis — the leading research center for spinal cord injuries. Estefan served as chairwoman for a capital campaign that raised more than 40 million dollars to build the Lois Pope Life Center neurological research facility. The foundation also raises funds for other organizations and has donated millions of dollars to a number of charities including the American Red Cross, UNICEF and the Miami Children’s Hospital Brain Institute.
Estefan is the ninth Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year honoree and is the first woman to receive the honor. She joins a prestigious list of previous honorees, which includes Julio Iglesias, Ricky Martin, and Carlos Santana.

Spanish Pop Star David Bisbal on V-me’s Estudio Billboard Tuesday, January 8 and Sunday, December 13

Spanish pop star, David Bisbal appears on V-me’s Estudio Billboard January 8 at 10:00pm(ET) with encore on January 13 at 8:00pm.
After performing unnoticed for five years in a local Spanish indie band, David Bisbal appeared in 2001 on the Spanish music reality show, Operación Triunfo where he finished as first runner up. Quickly signed to a recording contract, he launched an international career that includes the 2003 Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. “I didn’t set out to win Operación Triunfo, I just wanted to share my music. I prayed every night to have someone hear me and give me a chance.”
David Bisbal speaks with host Leila Cobo about his family and the inspiration he gets from them. He also reflects on the hardships of touring and being away from the people he loves most, and the challenges of life in the media spotlight. “Somehow with music, everything turns positive, even some issues in the media. I’ve always known that my music and the people I love are like a shield to me.”
While David Bisbal is an international pop star, he explains that he tries to add a little touch of his homeland in every song — drawing on his roots in Southern Spain. On Estudio Billboard he performs a very traditional Spanish song dedicated to his homeland, Almería, tierra noble, along with the award-winning Amar es lo que quiero from his latest album, Premonición.
Estudio Billboard is a new music and interview series developed by V-me, in collaboration with Billboard Magazine and hosted by Billboard’s Leila Cobo, the ultimate Latin music insider. Taped before an intimate live audience, Latin artists reveal new insights into their lives, careers, musical influences and much more. Top Latin artists such as Ricardo Montaner, Maná, Franco de Vita, Daniela Mercury, Jose Feliciano, Gloria Estefan and Daddy Yankee who have also appeared on the program. The season airs in the United States through 2007 and 2008. Estudio Billboard is presented in Spanish with subtitles (closed captioning) in English.

Emilio Estefan Jr. to Appear on ‘Bayly’
Tags: bilingual, children, Cuba, Cuban, DirecTV, Disney, Doctor, documentary, Emilio Estefan, Film, film festival, Gloria Estefan, Hollywood, hospital, Mega TV, radio, spanish broadcasting system, Spanish-language, television
Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. (SBS) (NASDAQ:SBSA) and MEGA TV Channel 22 announced today that the famous Cuban music producer, Emilio Estefan Jr, will guest star on “Bayly,” MEGA TV’s version of “Larry King Live,” this Tuesday, December 4 at 10:00 PM EST and at 11:00 PM PST on DirecTV Channel 405.
In addition to being a music and film producer, Emilio is also a member of President George W. Bush’s Committee of the Arts and Humanities and is responsible for coordinating artistic and cultural events for the White House.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to produce events for the White House,” said Estefan. “It gives me the opportunity to showcase Latin roots to leading politicians and dignitaries from all over the world.”
Emilio Estefan has recently completed his documentary “90 Millas” (“90 Miles”), which will debut at The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) on December 13. “90 Millas” represents the distance between Cuba and Florida and the film will examine the experience of Cuban musicians who have taken refuge in the United States as they feel so far away from their homeland, despite it being a short distance.
During the celebration of the documentary’s premier, Estefan’s wife, Gloria Estefan, will perform several songs from the album produced by Emilio, which has the same name as the documentary and recently reached number one on the Latin Billboard Charts.
During his career, Estefan has received 14 Grammy Awards and was honored as the first “Person of the Year” by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in 2000 for his work as music producer. Estefan has also been instrumental in the development and production of the Latin Grammy Awards. In addition, Emilio is the co-publisher of “Ocean Drive En Español,” one of the leading Hispanic lifestyle magazines.
The drive and passion that Emilio has for his music has also characterized his successful foray into being an investor and developer in the hospitality industry. In the early 1990s, he opened “Larios on the Beach” in Miami. Currently, The Estefans own Bongos Cuban Café in Orlando’s Walt Disney Resort and in the American Airlines Arena in Miami, achieving the same level of success.
As a teenager who migrated from his birthplace of Cuba to the United States in the 1960s, Emilio experienced the cultural and racial differences that characterized the great migration to the United States.
“I can say, very respectfully, that I understand the gap between Latino and Anglo cultures,” Estefan said explaining his success. “My ability to work within the gap between these two cultures has allowed me to create my work,” said Estefan.
In addition to 14 Grammy’s, Emilio was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, where he received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award and was honored by the Former United States Secretary of State, Colin Powell. In 2005, he won the BMI Songwriter of the Year Award and got his personal star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. Estefan also has Honorary Doctorate degrees from Barry University, University of Miami, and Florida International University.
Emilio and Gloria are also actively involved in the community. The Gloria Estefan Foundation was established with the purpose of supporting various organizations, geared towards research and finding cures for all different types of illnesses that effect children all over the world.
“It is important to give back a part of what you have received,” said Emilio. “That’s why Gloria and I are always getting involved with the Latino and Anglo community.”
A musician, producer, creator, visionary, husband, father, friend and an influential person of the community, Emilio Estefan Jr is a true symbol of the new Latino.
Do not miss the great Emilio Estefan Jr. during an exclusive interview on “Bayly” this Tuesday, December 4, at 10:00 PM EST on MEGA TV and at 11:00 PM PST on DirecTV’s Channel 405 – your favorite stations.
