AMERICAN MASTERS

“Orozco: Man on Fire” Wednesday, September 19, 2007, 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET This is the vibrant story of an artist whose dramatic life, iconoclastic personality and dynamic painting changed the way we see art and politics. Jose Clemente Orozco’s travels back and forth across the U.S.- Mexico border are emblematic of the experiences of millions of Mexican migrants and immigrants who come seeking a better life in America. His personal convictions and tenacity in the face of daunting obstacles make him a compelling figure with universal appeal. Shot on location in Mexico and the United States, the documentary weaves a rich tapestry of images and sound, evoking Orozco’s artistic style while opening a window onto the artist’s inner life, passions and convictions. www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters BROWN IS THE NEW GREEN: GEORGE LOPEZ AND THE AMERICAN DREAM Wednesday, September 12, 2007, 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET

Latinos, this nation’s largest and fastest-growing minority group, are big business. This smart, fast-paced program examines how efforts to profit from this group are shaping the contemporary Latino identity. The documentary’s focal point is George Lopez, an icon and advocate for Latinos’ move into the mainstream. As Cosby did for African Americans decades ago, Lopez normalizes the image of Latinos in a way that delights and entertains. BROWN IS THE NEW GREEN contrasts his endeavors with the efforts of marketers intent on spinning Latinos as a wholly distinct subculture. The show also features conversations with members of the much-coveted Latino youth market, whose tastes and interests are far more eclectic than the marketers would have us believe.

“Isabella’s passion for fashion, runway shows and her expertise in glamorous coming of age celebrations, inspired her to launch BellaQuinceanera.com and Be15.com, online resources for Quinceañeras and Sweet Sixteen celebrants and their families, based out of Los Angeles, California.

Isabella has been dubbed “The Fairy Godmother of Quinceañeras” by the Latin media. She has advised, MTV, Teen magazine and the Sundance Film Festival winning movie, Quinceañera. Recently Isabella served as the expert for Walt Disney World’s “Quinceañera, a dream come true” the first ever Spanish lenguage event held by Disney, honoring 15 Quinceañeras from across the United States and Puerto Rico.

The quinceañera market has reached critical mass. The 2000 Census counted 1.5 million Hispanic girls ages 10-14. Looking toward the future, nearly a third (29.4 percent) of Hispanics are under the age of 15, compared to only 21.1 percent in the U.S. population, according to a 2004 Census estimate. Los Angeles County has 4.6 million Hispanics, the most of any county in the nation. In the Los Angeles DMA (Designated Market Area for advertising media), there are about 190,000 Hispanic female teens between the ages of 12 and 14, according to Census estimates. “Approximately 65 percent to 70 percent of these girls reside in households whose heads of household are foreign born or Spanish dominant, which would be the households that would be most likely to carry on the tradition. Hispanic families spend a bundle to make the quinceañera memorable for their little princess. The minimum for a do-it-herself quinceañera can start at $5,000, but for upscale families the price can escalate to the $200,000 to $300,000 range.

Isabella is a sort of aunt to Quinceañeras. She is the “Madrina of advice”, representing ALL the madrinas. Through her websites, she offers both free advice and planning information as well as an online store where all the items for the celebration are available. From princess dresses to shoes and accessories, party supplies and customized items. The exquisite merchandise is personally hand picked by Isabella from around the world, all the while collecting valuable information and ideas to share with her online database of mothers and daughters, who are planning this special once in a lifetime family affair. It offers something for everyone and every aspect of the event.

Isabella began her career modeling and acting at the tender age of 12. Her event-planning experience began when she produced her own Quinceañera. As a fashion model and as former Miss Dominican Republic, Isabella has traveledextensively as a representative of her native country in numerous International beauty, fashion and business events, such as, The National Great Bridal Expo, International Women Society, International Immigrants Foundation in NYC. During the comprehensive four day training program and business plan competition, students created business plans on a variety of topics including hair salons, medical centers, landscaping services and computer consulting. The business plans were then evaluated by a panel of judges, based on originality, professionalism, competitive advantage, business financials, and marketing.

“The USHCC Foundation is extremely proud that we are able to provide students with the resources and opportunities to further enhance their entrepreneurial aspirations, said USHCC Foundation President and CEO, Frank Lopez.” “I thank the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, our gracious host Colleen Barrett, President of Southwest Airlines and the entire Southwest team for all of their assistance in helping to make the first Annual Dallas BizFest such a successful event and we look forward to coming back to Dallas next year.”

A highlight of the four day program was an announcement by Veolia Transportation. Veolia Transportation committed to matching the scholarship awards granted to the top three business plan competition winners. The initial scholarship awards were to be in the amounts of $1000.00, $750.00 and $500.00. “Isabella Martinez Wall, dubbed the Fairy Godmother of Quinceañeras by the Latin press, was honored recently by the City of Los Angeles, California and Mayor Antonio Villarraigoza, in a city hosted event last month benefiting the Girl Scouts Organization. Mr. Ozzie Lopez of the office of the Mayor presented the certificate to the Dominican-born actress and model Isabella Martinez Wall as recognition for her continued efforts toward inspiring girls to become independent young women through the tradition of the Quinceañera celebration.

Martínez Wall, a former Revlon Unforgettable Woman and Miss Dominican Republic, launched her business www.Be15.com four years ago dedicated to preparing young Latina’s for this coming-of-age celebration and for their future as independent, intelligent, purpose-driven women.

“The Girl Scouts organization is the perfect environment to share our message of inspiration. At the ceremony I felt compelled to read a Bible passage, Proverbs 31, about being a virtuous woman. If we can instill these noble qualities at an early stage, we can influence the future of young women everywhere.” said Martinez-Wall following the event.

The theme of the event “Being a Princess” was perfect for sharing the inspirational message as girls from East Los Angeles troops 272, 745 and 1089, paraded into the event on the red carpet dressed as princesses. Quinceañera traditions such as dancing with Dad, riding in a horse drawn carriage, dinner protocol and the wearing of a Tiara were celebrated. For her entry in an essay contest, one lucky girl won a Quinceañera dress, tiara and scepter from THE ISABELLA WALL COLLECTION compliments of www.Be15.com

About Isabella Martinez-Wall:

Isabella started her career in television commercials. Her notoriety leads to being selected from over 5000 candidates to be one of Revlon’s Most Unforgettable Women. A successful runway model in the NYC bridal industry lead to her expertise in the special occasion market. “Girl Scouting has always been about making new friends and keeping the old. Mount Magazine Council’s Hispanic Girl Scout Group takes that concept one step further, combining the new experiences they have in America with the traditions of their native culture.

Leader Malis Dahlem, a native of Mexico who teaches Spanish at Immaculate Conception School in Fort Smith, switches back and forth easily from Spanish to English when she works with the Scouts and their families.

“Most of the girls know English from school and prefer that I speak English, but their families often speak Spanish at home. One of my biggest jobs is translating English council materials into Spanish for parents.”"
