“On Tuesday, OCTOBER 7, 2008, PADRES Contra El Cancer (PADRES), a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life for Latino children with cancer and their families, will celebrate its Eighth Annual Fund-Raising Gala, “EL SUENO DE ESPERANZA.” The ceremony’s theme, “An Evening for Celebration and HOPE” will pay tribute to PADRES’ extraordinary children and families. FARMERS INSURANCE GROUP (FARMERS) joins forces with PADRES for a consecutive year as the Title Sponsor. Festivities begin at 6:30 pm and will be held at ‘HOLLYWOOD & HIGHLAND CENTER’ in the GRAND BALLROOM at the world famous KODAK THEATER in Hollywood, CA.
EVA LONGORIA PARKER, star of ABC’s Desperate Housewives and PADRES’ National Spokesperson, will serve as Gala Chair. The evening includes a special musical presentation by multiple Latin Grammy award winning artist ALEJANDRO FERNANDEZ. “As public figures, we have a commitment to our community. I feel very fortunate to be able to contribute to better the quality of life of the children and their families in their fight against cancer” shared Fernandez.
In addition to EVA LONGORIA PARKER, and PADRES ambassadors YANCEY ARIAS, ADRIAN BELLANI, ANGELICA CASTRO, MATT CEDENO, BETO CUEVAS, CRISTIAN DE LA FUENTE, FERNANDO DEL RINCON, and CRISTINA PEREZ, as well as other prominent celebrities who have lent their name in years past, have joined Eva Longoria Parker, once again, in support of PADRES’ life-saving mission. The list of celebrities includes JESSICA ALBA, BILLY BUSH, RICARDO ANTONIO CHAVIRA, MARCIA CROSS, OSCAR DE LA HOYA, JAMIE FOXX, TERRENCE HOWARD, FELICITY HUFFMAN, MARIO LOPEZ, CONSTANCE MARIE, CARLOS MENCIA, BRITTANY MURPHY, ANA ORTIZ, TONY PARKER, KEN PAVES, PAULINA RUBIO, ROSELYN SANCHEZ, RYAN SEACREST, JESSICA SIMPSON AND SOFIA VERGARA.
“We are pleased to honor Farmers Insurance Group, the Los Angeles Avengers and Derek Fisher and Candace Fisher at our Gala. They are great supporters and representatives of PADRES’ mission. We are extremely honored to bestow the Champion of HOPE Award to Derek Fisher and Candace Fisher as they have lived through the heartaches and anguish, yet never gave up hope in the life of their child,” states ELVIA BARBOA, Chief Executive Officer of PADRES.
FARMERS INSURANCE GROUP, whose direct financial contributions in support of PADRES’ and its life-saving mission, will be acknowledged with the ‘EL SUENO DE ESPERANZA’ Award. This award acknowledges an individual / corporate partner for exemplary dedication, commitment and compassion to improving the quality of life for Latino children with cancer and their families.
LUISA ACOSTA-FRANCO, Assistant Vice-President of Diversity & Emerging Markets of FARMERS said, “We are excited to once again be a part of this fantastic event. At Farmers, the well-being of communities is important to us…especially when it comes to children. We could not be more pleased about supporting EVA LONGORIA PARKER and PADRES’ mission. It’s our honor to once again be the title sponsor for a second year in a row.”
‘EL SUENO DE ESPERANZA’ will also recognize PADRES’ distinguished friends and colleagues for their humanitarian contributions in support of the cancer community. Additional honorees this year will include the LOS ANGELES AVENGERS, who will receive the RUBY OLIVA CEDILLO TRIBUTE Award for exemplifying PADRES’ guiding values and core ideals — Honesty, Character, Integrity, Respect, Commitment to Community, and Service to Humanity. Also, DEREK FISHER of the Los Angeles Lakers & CANDACE FISHER will receive the CHAMPION OF HOPE Award, which recognizes a Cancer Survivor or Family Member(s) who personifies courage against cancer with Strength, Determination, Dignity and, most of all, HOPE. Derek and his wife, Candace have personally felt the impact that cancer can have on a family when their young daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer called retinoblastoma last year. Since that time, the Fishers have become extremely active in urging parents to test their children for this disease.
“My wife and I are honored that we can and have made a difference within the community and have helped families understand childhood cancer and other blood disorders,” said Fisher. “PADRES understands the needs of the children and the families which have been affected by cancer. They deliver the day to day service necessary so that families can concentrate their attention on the success of their child’s treatment. It is truly an honor to be recognized by such an organization and receive the CHAMPION OF HOPE Award this year.”

Las Vegas, ¡Aqui y Ahora! - Latin Performers Take Center Stage this Summer in the Country’s Top Tourist Destination

Filed under [ Entertainment ] [ Press Releases ] [ Blogante Business ] [ Blogante Entertainment ] [ Nevada ] [ Las Vegas ]
Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

“This summer, Latino artists, comedians and entertainers are in the spotlight in the country’s top travel destination: Las Vegas. Visitors from around the world are flocking to the Strip at the height of travel season to see award-winning musical talents such as Juanes, Ozomatli and Camila, as well as comedians like Carlos Mencia and George Lopez. In a city already known for world-class entertainment, these Latino acts are drawing sellout crowds.

Recently, Carlos Mencia, the Honduran-born host of Comedy Central’s “Mind of Mencia” showcased his comedy at Pearl Concert Theater at The Palms Casino Resort; while Juanes, a three-time Latin Grammy-winning Colombian artist was at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Ozomatli, the Grammy-winning Latin fusion band, performed poolside at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino; Camila, the hit Mexican band, prepares for their live performance at The Joint (also at the Hard Rock) on June 20. The Grammy-nominated Mexican trio’s third single, Todo Cambió, recently reached the #1 spot of Mexico’s Top 100 Singles Chart.

The Strip is already preparing for Mexican Independence Day. Already lined up for the weekend, September 12-15, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is Luis Miguel. Leading Latin Pop Star Alejandro Fernández brings his new tour “VIENTO A FAVOR” to the Mandalay Bay Events Center Monday, Sept. 15. Tickets for Fernández are on sale now, while Miguel’s are on sale June 7.

Packing an entire summer’s worth of fun into one trip has never been easier than in fabulous Las Vegas. Whether it’s the hottest new headliner, a chic restaurant opening or a VIP event at a trendy nightclub, there is always something exciting happening in Vegas.

There’s a good reason why Las Vegas is called the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” The biggest shows and brightest stars are within walking distance on the famed Strip. Elton John, Bette Midler and Cher have taken over The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, while Barry Manilow performs at the Las Vegas Hilton. The curtain rises on Mamma Mia! at Mandalay Bay and Jersey Boys at The Palazzo, while five different Cirque du Soleil shows entice guests to enjoy a different world. Beginning in September, Cirque du Soleil will add another show to the Strip with Criss Angel’s Believe. Tickets are available now.

Las Vegas has redefined the culinary and wine experience by offering world-class restaurants, more Master Sommeliers than any other city in the world, more wine sold per capita than in any other destination and the most comprehensive collection of celebrity chefs including Guatemalan native Eduardo Perez, who command their own fan base of fine diners and culinary enthusiasts. Perez worked his way up within the renowned Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group family, and is now the executive chef of Trattoria del Lupo at Mandalay Bay.

As the dining scene evolves in Las Vegas, new restaurants continue to open nearly every month, providing unique experiences for repeat visitors. Some of the many new restaurants include: Mario Batali’s first steakhouse Carnevino and fiery Brazilian SUSHISAMBA in The Palazzo, Payard Pâtisserie & Bistro at Caesars Palace, DJT in Trump International Hotel and Tower, RUB BBQ inside the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Kerry Simon’s Simon at Palms Place and Hard Rock Hotel’s AGO. Stephen Hanson and B.R. Guest opened Dos Caminos Las Vegas, at The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino, the first outside of New York City.

Enter any casino resort and discover amazing shopping opportunities around every corner. From Manolo and Jimmy Choo to Prada, Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, more than 700 different retail outlets and 11 million square feet of shopping fill the destination. One-of-a-kind shopping venues include Wynn Esplanade, The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, Mandalay Place, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, Via Bellagio, Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, Fashion Show Mall, Town Square and The Shoppes at Palazzo. For those looking to really indulge, The Strip is home to the Penske/Wynn Ferrari-Maserati dealership, as well as Lamborghini Las Vegas in The Palazzo.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) is charged with marketing Southern Nevada as a tourism and convention destination worldwide, and also with operating the Las Vegas Convention Center and Cashman Center. “One of the most prominent Mexican-Americans to be recognized in mainstream American popular culture, George Lopez has decided to retire from stand-up comedy when he turns the age of 55 in nine years time. The 46-year-old Latino funnyman explains that he doesn’t want to risk his health as he hits his 60s.

Lopez, who previously starred in the sitcom George Lopez for five years, already had one major health scare. He suffered from a genetic disorder in 2005, which caused his kidneys to deteriorate. That same year, he received a kidney transplant from his wife. Since then, the couple has become spokespeople for the National Kidney Foundation.

“The driving rain and the absence of a celebrity guest failed to dampen the enthusiasm of nearly 200 volunteers, who spent part of Saturday afternoon chanting “Sí, se puede!” (Yes, we can) inside Barack Obama’s Houston campaign headquarters.

The volunteers, who were being trained as precinct captains, strained forward in their folding chairs to listen to George Lopez, the Mexican-American comedian and actor, announce his support for Obama over a cell phone held up to a microphone.

“I’m throwing all my efforts to Senator Obama today,” said Lopez, who couldn’t make the session because of an aggravated knee. “If we want change, he’s the best candidate for change.”"*

“n your scorecard, mark down a whiff for George Lopez on his first swing at this week’s AT&T National Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The tournament doesn’t start until Thursday, but when I offered Lopez a chance to kick off his favorite event with a big bang by making headlines from here to Hollywood, he foozled his niblick, so to speak.

Here’s the deal: Bill Murray is the absolute king of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the top drawing card (when Tiger’s not around) and a crazed, amazing, nonstop, 18-hole show.”*

LULAC Joins COMCAST “Our Time To Vote,” a $5 Million National Multi-Cultural Voter Education And Registration Campaign | LULAC-League of United Latin American Citizens

Tags: , , , , , , ,

“LULAC has joined Comcast to launch “Our Time to Vote,” a year-long, non-partisan voter education and registration campaign designed to increase voting in Hispanic communities served by the cable industry.

“Comcast recognizes that broader participation in the democratic process is important for our nation, and we are very pleased to launch this partnership to pursue that goal,” said Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen. “This campaign reflects the cable industry’s commitment to strong local communities and to active public citizenship.”

The outreach to the Hispanic community, part of an estimated $5 million multicultural campaign, consists of four public service announcements (PSAs), one of which features Hispanic entertainers and leaders, such as George Lopez, Ana Ortiz and Janet Murguía, National Council of La Raza (NCLR) President and CEO, encouraging Hispanic audiences to register to vote, as well as the creation and launch of two nationally available voter education resources: the www.ourtimetovote.com webpage, and a voter information resources hotline, 1.866.544.VOTE.

A series of “Get out the Vote” spots will run from September 1, 2008, through November 3, 2008, just prior to the general election. The PSA can be viewed at: www.comcastnews.com/Hispanic2008.wmv.

“Our Time to Vote’ is designed to bring a wide range of diverse Americans into the voting process,” added Susan Gonzales, Corporate Senior Director of Federal and External Affairs and Vice President of the Comcast Foundation. “As a company dedicated to diversity, we are pleased to make this contribution to broadened civic engagement in the African American, Asian American and Pacific Islander and Hispanic communities.”

Comcast’s overall commitment to diversity is focused in four key areas: attracting and retaining a multicultural workforce, developing a diverse supplier group, offering a wide selection of multicultural programming and pledging significant community investments.

As a result of support provided by the Comcast’s Foundation, the LULAC Democracy Initiative will increase LULAC’s year-round efforts for the turnout of immigrant and Latino voters nationwide by improving political civic engagement through issues-education and advocacy training. The LULAC Democracy Initiative has two essential goals. 1) To increase, the number of immigrant and Latino voters in 2008 elections and onwards from the current rates of participation. And, 2) to grow the understanding of the long-term connection between positive public policy, civic participation, and voting on their communities through issues advocacy thereby strengthening democratic participation in the United States.

In the targeted cities LULAC will hold training workshops on civic participation—including training how to run a precinct, education on voter registration process, and education on get-out-the-vote. Additionally, LULAC will hold candidate forums nationwide.”*
