"Mike Newell delivers a respectable movie adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s beloved 1985 novel, which because of its structural and temporal challenges has often been dubbed unfilmable. Newell and screenwriter Ronald Harwood remain faithful in a very literal sense to the narrative of the novel, and if they fail to translate the sweet melancholy and romantic soul at the heart of Marquez’s prose, they succeed in producing a solid romantic film which will satisfy older adult audiences.

The production ran the risk of being one of those awful multi-national soufflés like The House Of The Spirits or The Bridge At San Luis Rey where American actors talk English with ropey foreign accents and the very core of the source books are betrayed. Cholera just about overcomes those dangers by employing Latin actors – Spanish, Italian, Latino Americans and Latin Americans – even though their thickly accented English is often grating."

One man, one love, many, many partners -- 622, each conquest meticulously recorded, detailed and appreciated.

Then there's the whole magical realism thing, a maliciously mischievous parrot, a seemingly immortal turtle. Not to mention the sufficient suspension of disbelief the viewer/reader needs to swallow that an elderly man has the sex appeal to bed a nubile, and eager, 14-year-old girl."

"British director Mike Newell hadn't even wrapped his adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when he heard that another well-known novel -- this one even more beloved and admired than J.K. Rowling's book -- was about to be turned into a movie.

Newell's small-scale, character-driven body of work (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Enchanted April, Mona Lisa Smile) made him an unexpected but inspired choice to direct a Harry Potter movie. But the filmmaker knew the odds were much lower he'd land the gig of directing Love in the Time of Cholera,an adaptation of the classic Latin American novel by Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. After all, at least the Potter kid was a Brit.

Or, as the animated, 65-year-old filmmaker puts it himself: ``Why on Earth would you choose an Englishman in late middle age to direct this movie?''

And yet, when the $50 million film opens in theaters Friday, it will bear Newell's imprint as a director -- yet another unlikely element in a movie that, for more than 20 years, seemed destined never to be made."

From his memoir, Living to Tell the Tale, we know that a motherly madam let the student Gabo sleep in her open-air beach brothel when he was broke.
