Grupo Salinas, Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network present a series of events to support comprehensive immigration reform.

The initiatives begin with a forum in conjunction with the Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University entitled: "State of Latinos: The Consolidation of the Immigration Debate and its Impact on the Hemisphere." The event, which is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Study of International Migration, will be held at Gaston Hall on April 29, starting at 9 a.m., and feature opening remarks by Grupo Salinas Founder and Chairman Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego, following a welcome by Dr. Carol Lancaster, Interim Dean, of Georgetown's Walsh School of Foreign Service. The forum will include a presentation of the white paper "The State of Latinos: Immigration," by the University of Denver's Center for Community Engagement and Scholarship.

The forum and white paper are in addition to a multi-media informational campaign that includes public service announcements that will be aired on Azteca America that feature Mexican actor Luis Felipe Tovar, a web-based campaign on www.fundacionaztecaamerica.org and printed material that will be distributed by Azteca America affiliated stations in 69 cities throughout the country. The theme of the campaign is "I too am America," emphasizing the important role that immigrants have played in the development of the United States throughout history.

"There are some very frightening anti-immigration messages and polices that are being promoted throughout the country right now," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network. "Now more than ever is the time to push for comprehensive immigration reform to be actively debated and supported."

Fundacion Azteca America, MALDEF and the Mayor's Office of Census 2010 are pleased to present "The State of Latinos: Census 2010" forum the latest of a series of events to encourage Latino participation in the 2010 Census.

The discussion and educational event is designed to eliminate any misconceptions about the 2010 Census and emphasize the importance of the process for the political and economic well-being of the Latino community in the United States.

The State of Latinos: Census 2010 will be held at Azteca America's flagship station, Azteca America, Los Angeles 54 in Glendale and taped live to air.

The forum includes the participation of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Father Richard Estrada, University of Denver Professor Debora Ortega and the U.S. Census Bureau California Assistant Regional Director Celeste Jimenez. The forum will also have remote participation of Latino leaders such as Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, labor activist Dolores Huerta, MALDEF President Thomas A. Saenz, NALEO Executive Director Arturo Vargas and Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network.

The forum is part of a multipronged, multimedia effort by Fundacion Azteca America to encourage Latino participation in the Census process. The 2010 Census is a crucial step for the Latino community to ensure that it is proportionally represented in federal, state and local budgets, as well as in representative districts of the political process. Unfortunately, fear of authorities by the Latino community can lead to limited participation in the census process.

"The Census calls on every resident of Los Angeles to participate and make their voices heard," said Mayor Villaraigosa. "Working with our community and media partners we will ensure a complete and accurate count of all Angelenos, critical to securing full political representation and our fair share of the federal and state resources our City needs."

"Our goal is to educate our audience so that there is no fear surrounding the Census process. We're committed to do everything within our reach to meet this goal," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Azteca America Network and Fundacion Azteca America. "A strong participation in this year's Census is one of the most important actions for our community this year, as it is crucial for fair budget allocations and political representation."

"Obtaining a complete count in the Census is critical to the future of the Latino community," said Thomas Saenz, President and General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). "Our strength and determination will be recognized through our strong Census participation."

"Every one of us needs to be counted in the 2010 Census. Our numbers will bring resources that we desperately need in our communities and a strong voice to the political arena," said labor activist Dolores Huerta. "Si se puede!"

Fundacion Azteca America is joining forces with the Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF) for a targeted 2010 Census push that includes the distribution of 40,000 bilingual educational leaflets in Washington DC, San Antonio and Los Angeles.

"We're coming down to the final stretch of the 2010 Census activities and we want to continue to bring home to our community the importance of this year's count," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network.

The leaflets include three principal messages about the upcoming count: 1) Important, 2)Safe and 3)Easy; as well as the "Cuentate" or "Be Counted!" slogans that have been used by Fundacion Azteca America and MALDEF in different campaigns, in addition to the official U.S. Census "It's in our hands" or "Esta en nuestras manos" slogan.

Also included in the information are the local MALDEF Census hotlines in each of the three target markets.

"The 2010 Census will shape the nation for the next decade, determining political representation as well as the availability of important government services. Being counted is critical to the future progress of the Latino community," said Thomas A. Saenz, President & General Counsel of MALDEF.

The leaflets will be distributed at places and events with high concentrations of Latino residents, including festivals, conferences, food banks and senior citizen centers, to name a few.

About MALDEF

MALDEF strives to implement programs that are structured to bring Latinos into the mainstream of American political and socio-economic life; providing better educational opportunities; encouraging participation in all aspects of society; and offering a positive vision for the future. Unique to MALDEF is an approach that combines advocacy, educational outreach, and litigation strategies to achieve socio-economic change.

MALDEF has achieved significant legal victories with the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Plyler v. Doe. The Court struck down a Texas law that allowed districts to charge tuition to children of undocumented immigrant parents. MALDEF's victory opened school doors to all students equally. In 2006, the U.S. Supreme Court heard seven challenges to a Texas Congressional redistricting plan. Only MALDEF's prevailed. The New York Times described it as "the most important voting rights case of the decade, rejecting the statewide gerrymandering claim brought by...other plaintiffs while accepting the Voting Rights Act challenge in Southwestern Texas, brought by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund." The case resulted in new lines drawn for the 23rd Congressional District and a special election (where a MALDEF suit opened the polls early) resulting in the Latino community having the opportunity to elect its candidate of choice to Congress.

MALDEF is headed by President and General Counsel Thomas A. Saenz and is governed by a 30-member national Board of Directors. Headquartered in Los Angeles, MALDEF operates four regional offices in Los Angeles, San Antonio, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

"Fundacion Azteca America is pleased to announce the official launch of its education campaign entitled "Educacion : Es tu futuro!" (Education: It's Your Future!).

The effort is part of a series of initiatives spearheaded by Grupo Salinas Founder and Chairman Ricardo B. Salinas to support education throughout the Americas.

The campaign includes public service announcements featuring top Azteca entertainment personalities broadcast on Azteca America Network. It also includes a web-based campaign that can be accessed at www.fundacionaztecaamerica.org, and print material that will be distributed through the network of over 60 local stations of Azteca America through the country and participating partners.

The focus of the campaign is based on three primary goals: 1) Decrease school dropout rates, 2) Foment more interest in the community for higher education and 3) Instill the necessity and benefits of closer parental involvement since birth in the education process.

"Our education campaign is the result of a consultative process of key legislative members of our community and non-governmental experts," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network. "As a parallel effort to the White House initiatives on education, our goal is to maintain education at the forefront of our community. Without education there is no future advance for our community."

A recent study by the Pew Hispanic Center rates education as one of the biggest concerns of Latino families. Nevertheless, Latinos continue to over-index their peers in the general population and the African-American population when it comes to dropout rates and have some of the lowest levels of college graduation rates in the country. One of the goals of the campaign is to emphasize that education starts at birth and continues as a lifelong process.

"Grupo Salinas, Fundacion Azteca America and the International Center for Journalists presented yesterday a high-level panel discussion about the challenges that face the Latino community, including the importance of participation in the 2010 Census and the passage of a successful Immigration Reform Bill.

The white paper presented by University of Denver professor Debora Ortega, in conjunction with Grupo Salinas and Fundacion Azteca America, made a series of recommendations, including the suspension of immigration raids during the summer months of 2010, when enumerators canvass neighborhoods for follow-ups to census questionnaires. The report also proposes coordinated informational programs on all four national Spanish-language television networks -- Azteca America, Univision, Telefutura and Telemundo -- to increase trust in the questionnaires and inform in a step-by-step manner how to properly fill out the forms. Finally, the report recommends continued hiring of culturally-relevant local workers at the U.S. Census.

"A complete census count is the single most important issue for our community," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network. "As a critical step in our democratic process, we will continue to dispel any misconceptions about the process and encourage our community to be accurately counted."

The 2010 Census is an essential tool for distributing federal, state and local budgets. It is also fundamental for representative participation in the U.S. Congress.

The message on the census was echoed by many of the panelists during the event.

"Wherever we can, we should tell Latinos to participate (in the Census). This is a matter of civic participation," said former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez. "Community groups, media and radio personalities that are vocal on all issues should be vocal about the Census."

"Our goal is to count everyone. And we count on our partners to fulfill this goal," said Marilia Matos, Associate Director for Field Operation of the U.S. Census Bureau.

On the issue of immigration reform, the panelists were optimistic that a working solution could be achieved soon, hopefully in the first half of next year.

"We have never had prosperity in this country without immigration," said Gutierrez.

Also present on the panel was Noticiero Azteca America correspondent Armando Guzman.
