How Do You Say Justice in Mixteco?

Erasto Vasquez was surprised to see a forklift appear one morning outside his trailer near the corner of East and Springfield, two small rural roads deep in the grapevines, ten miles southwest of Fresno. He and his neighbors pleaded with the driver, but to no avail. The machine uprooted the fence Vasquez had built around his home and left it smashed in the dirt. Then, the forklift’s metal tines lifted the side of one trailer high into the air. It groaned and tipped over, with a family’s possessions still inside. “We were scared,” Vasquez remembers. “I felt it shouldn’t be happening, that it showed a complete lack of respect. But who was there to speak for us?”
Eight farmworker families lived in this tiny “colonia,” or settlement, on the ranch of Marjorie Bowen. Their rented trailers weren’t in great shape. Cracks around the windows let in rain and constant dust, which carried with it all the fertilizer and chemicals used to kill insects on the nearby vines. Some trailers had holes in the floors. None had heat in the winter or air conditioning in the summer. “*

In an updated analysis of radio and television market revenues, SNL Kagan (www.snlkagan.com) identifies small-to-midsize markets in the Pacific region, especially in metro areas with large Hispanic populations, as having the greatest growth potential. The report, “Radio/TV Station Annual Outlook: Market-by-Market Revenue Projections,” published annually by SNL Kagan for over 20 years, takes into account overall broadcast revenue trends, market demographics and expected ad revenues from the presidential election in determining a market’s growth potential.
Radio Market Revenues by CAGR Rank
CAGR Rank, Market, ‘07 Market Rank, CAGR ‘07-‘12, Retail Growth ‘07-‘12
1. San Diego, CA, 17, 2.0%, 11.9%
2. Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA, 26, 1.9%, 10.1%
3. Stockton, CA, 79, 1.9%, 11.9%
4. San Jose, CA, 35, 1.9%, 8.9%
5. Fresno, CA, 66, 1.9%, 10.7%
SNL Kagan estimates five-year annual revenue growth of 1.1% for radio markets, despite a 2.5% drop in total radio revenue in 2007. San Diego tops the list of fastest-growing markets, largely due to a substantial Hispanic population, the shifting economic focus to high-tech jobs and a five-year retail growth rate of 11.9% (well above the national average of 6.5%). Overall, radio revenues in the Pacific region are expected to grow rapidly, with 13 of the top 20 markets by revenue residing in California.
Television Market Revenues by CAGR Rank
CAGR Rank, Market, ‘07 Market Rank, CAGR ‘07-‘12, Retail Growth ‘07-‘12
1. Las Vegas, NV, 43, 6.2%, 7.9%
2. San Diego, CA, 27, 6.1%, 11.9%
3. Los Angeles, CA, 2, 5.7%, 7.7%
4. Phoenix, AZ, 12, 5.6%, 6.4%
5. San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA, 6, 5.6%, 7.3%
Likewise, SNL Kagan projects growth in TV revenues (3.9% over the next five years) despite a 2007 decline of 8.5% generated by the writers’ strike and advertising migration to the Internet. TV ad revenues are expected to rise 8.8% in 2008 from TV ad buys connected with the presidential election. The largest growth will likely be in the Pacific and Mountain regions, with Las Vegas and San Diego at the top of the list.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Great Lakes and Central South regions rank lowest for both radio and TV revenue projections. Slow retail growth and auto industry layoffs are the main factors for the depressed outlook in the Great Lakes, where revenue is projected to grow 2.7% for TV and 0.9% for radio. The Central South, particularly the Mississippi markets still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, faces tough times ahead, with projected revenue growth of 2.8% for TV and 0.8% for radio.

The Group Joins The Vans Warped Tour For 44 Dates, Kicking Off In Phoenix On June 25th
The Pinker Tones Will Perform An Extended Set Each Night In The Skull Candy Electronic Music Tent
“[Pinker Tones' 'Wild Animals' is] an endorphin-goosing dance album.”
- ROLLING STONE
“This Barcelona duo hit like a spicier Daft Punk, keeping the retro electronica but trading the po-mo mind games for hip-twisting grooves… for fans of Chromeo and Kraftwerk.”
- SPIN MAGAZINE
” Raising the bar for electronica used to be the realm of bands like Depeche Mode and New Order – but now groups like The Pinker Tones are bringing a wild energy and ambitious focus to a new generation.”
- ASSOCIATED PRESS
” Whatever crops up in the music — retro-funk breakdowns, bachelor-pad bossa novas, catchy choruses in Romance languages — the beat endures and thrives [on Wild Animals].”
- NEW YORK TIMES
” The boys from Barcelona hit the streets with [Wild Animals], a surprisingly confident and joyful collection of jaunty hooks and mondo beats that fully exploits all that the Pinker Tones hear and integrate in their port city.”
- THE WASHINGTON POST
“This group from Barcelona has developed a brilliant way to bring people to a musical climax thanks to their genius fusion of languages and rhythms in an electronic mood. ‘Wild Animals’ is one of the most amazing albums of the year.”
- PEOPLE EN ESPAÑOL
“Like some sort of hipster virus, the Pinker Tones’ poppy electronica has spread from the duo’s hometown of Barcelona.”
-BILLBOARD
The critics are buzzing about Barcelona-based electronic act The Pinker Tones‘ new album, ‘Wild Animals‘, as the group prepares to join the Vans Warped Tour on June 25 th in Phoenix. The dynamic duo will perform an extended set each night in the Skull Candy electronic music tent on the entire 44 date tour (SEE FULL TOUR DATES LISTING BELOW).
‘Wild Animals’ features a wide array of special vocal guests including reggae soul legend Jimmy Lindsay from Cymande on “The Whistling Song” and Amparo from Spanish band Amparanoia on “Electrotumbao”. First single will be the track, “Happy Everywhere.”
“Our last album, ‘The Million Colour Revolution’, was about utopia, a projection for how we wanted the world to be,” Mister Furia explains. “‘Wild Animals’ is about reality, our interpretation of the actual world we live in. Songs like “The Whistling Song”, “24″ and “On Se Promenait” are some of our happiest and most nostalgic yet.”
Just in 2007, the group was the subject of a New York Times feature, had an A&E television special, performed on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic”, had a song featured on hit sitcoms “Ugly Betty” and “Entourage” and saw heavy video play on networks like mtvU, MTV Tr3s, Mun2, and LATV. The Pinker Tones also made a major splash at last year’s SXSW, where they performed five shows in only 36 hours and also blew away the audience at KCRW’s Sounds Eclectic Evening in Los Angeles alongside leading artists like The Shins, Lily Allen and Rodrigo and Gabriela. The Pinker Tones recent single “Karma Hunters” was also selected by national bilingual youth network Mun2 as the theme song for its popular reality show ‘Chicas Project’.
This past August, The Pinker Tones released ‘More Colours!’, an album complete with infectious remixes and collaborations featuring a stellar lineup of artists including Kinky, Nortec Collective, Zeta Bosio (Soda Stereo) and Mexican Institute of Sound. Over several national U.S. tours throughout 2007, the DJ crew brought their electrifying set to fans across the country. The New York Times even claimed that, “Unlike many electronica acts, The Pinker Tones thrive onstage.” With a live show that combines the intensity of a rock band and the excitement of a DJ set, the group is moving along on the path to global domination. The Pinker Tones have ventured from Barcelona to such faraway places as London, Caracas, Buenos Aires, Moscow, Toronto, Beijing and Johannesburg.

Breast cancer strikes Latina women hard
Tags: Fresno, insurance, Maria Elena Salinas
It turns out, as a Latina, Coy became another statistic. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among Hispanic women.
That is a fact. As to why, that is a little more complicated to determine. Researchers seem to think that it is a combination of socioeconomic and cultural factors.
Being at a higher poverty level than non-Hispanic white women, more Latinas lack medical insurance, which puts them at a disadvantage in having adequate health care. Then, of course, there is the lack of awareness, due in part to the language barrier and conservative cultural stigma about how women should treat their bodies.”*

Univision Launches Innovative DTV Grassroots Outreach Initiative “Escuadron Digital”
Tags: Fresno, magazine, outreach, radio, Spanish-language, telefutura, television, Univision
Univision Communications Inc. announced today the latest phase of the Company’s campaign to raise awareness about the upcoming transition to digital television (DTV) entitled “Escuadrón Digital” (Digital Squad), a grassroots and on-air initiative using a one-on-one approach to ensure viewers are informed and prepared for the DTV transition in February 2009. The company announced the new phase following the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation event in Washington, D.C. at which it received the Service to America President’s Special Award for its multi-media digital transition awareness campaign.
“Escuadrón Digital” will reach out directly to communities across the country through local events, DTV Town Hall meetings and by deploying street teams that visit community and senior centers and select homes. The “Escuadrones” (Squads) will help viewers determine if television sets are analog or digital, help with coupon applications, as well as assist with the purchase and installation of converter boxes.
“Univision is the champion of Hispanic America. In this role we recognize that it is key to inform and motivate our viewers to take action on DTV as early as possible and ensure a smooth transition,” said Cesar Conde, executive vice president and chief strategy officer, Univision Communications Inc. “‘Escuadrón Digital’ builds on an extremely successful campaign to date, leverages our understanding and connection to our viewers and adds a personal approach to our awareness efforts.”
As part of the “Escuadrón Digital” effort, Univision is creating a national group that features Carlos Calderón, host of Galavisión’s “Acceso Máximo” (All Access), as the squad captain and an analog-to-digital ‘geek’ who will give viewers a digital analysis of their homes; Tony Dandrades, from Univision’s popular newsmagazine show “Primer Impacto” (First Impact), as the converter box tech who will demonstrate how to install converter boxes; digi diva Lilia Rodriguez Luciano from TeleFutura’s “Escandalo TV” (ShowBiz TV), who will help a selected viewer purchase an appropriate converter box; and the beloved Martica from “El Gordo y La Flaca” (The Scoop and the Skinny) who will help the squad get ready for their “missions” with her delicious coffee. These efforts will be replicated at the local level by the Univision Television Group.
The footage from the squad’s missions and assignments will premiere in July 2008 as part of “TV Digital…Estas Preparado?” (Digital TV…Are you ready?), a Univision Network special. Some of the squad’s assignments will also be featured in 30-second vignettes that will air on the network through February 2009. The “Escuadrón Digital” initiative also includes in-program education segments in national shows, national radio public service announcements (PSA’s) and a dedicated microsite on Univision.com (Uniclave: TV Digital) with comprehensive information and links to the coupon application program.
Univision launched the first and most aggressive, multi-media digital transition awareness campaign in October 2007. Since the campaign’s launch, Univision has aired DTV specials, covered the issue through local and national news and public affairs programs and has hosted interactive events across the nation to facilitate the DTV transition process for Hispanics. Additionally, Univision worked with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) on educational efforts which include a toll-free information hotline with Spanish-language capability to handle questions regarding the DTV conversion. In addition, the company has conducted numerous town hall meetings and events in cities including Chicago, San Francisco, Fresno and Dallas, reaching thousands of individuals.
“We are very grateful for the recognition from the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation and for the partnership with NAB, NTIA and the FCC,” added Conde. “At Univision we remain strongly committed to ensuring that every household in the country is informed and prepared for the DTV transition.”
The switch from analog TV to DTV began in 1996, when the U.S. Congress authorized the assignment of an additional broadcast channel to each TV broadcaster in order to introduce DTV service while simultaneously continuing analog TV broadcasts. In addition to improved picture and sound quality, DTV allows broadcasters to transmit multiple program streams. DTV technology also reduces the amount of spectrum needed nationwide for television broadcasting, freeing up broadcast spectrum for public safety and new wireless services. The FCC requires that all full-power television stations cease analog broadcasting on February 17, 2009.”*

Latino immigrant voters propelled working family candidates to victory. The Latino voter surge was sparked by the get-out-vote work of Strengthening Our Lives (a.k.a. SOL) whose 310 precinct workers door knocked over election weekend in the working family, mostly immigrant, neighborhoods for four candidates: top runoff vote getters Mark Ridley-Thomas, L.A. County Supervisor District # 2 candidate, Henry T Perea, Fresno Mayoral candidate, and Manuel Perez, State Assembly District #80 candidate, and Bob Blumenfield State Assembly District #40 candidate who was outright victorious.
“Voters said no to more of the same, no to a politics that does nothing to bring us better days,” noted SOL Executive Director Javier Gonzalez. “State wide we spoke with tens of thousands of humble, hard working, Latino immigrants who voted for candidates — African-American, Latino and Anglo — who imagined what is possible when we work together.”
State wide, over the past month 90 SOL precinct workers contacted nearly 75,000 voters. Over the last four days, SOL ramped up to 310 precinct workers — mostly Latino immigrants many of whom lived in the community they were now walking in — labored from sunrise to sunset to turnout the over 60,000 commitments they had gotten. On election night, SOL backed candidates received nearly 83,000 votes.
“Here in District 2, Latinos voted, many for the first time — they voted for,” commented Los Angeles SOL precinct leader Blanca Perez, “better schools, good jobs, accessible healthcare and safe streets — they voted for the issues that matter to all families.” “People were excited that someone who understood how hard we work was running,” commented Fresno precinct worker Raquel Barajas. “We will finally have someone who can truly bring all of our great city together.”
SOL, or Strengthening Our Lives, is a state wide coalition of labor and community organizations dedicated to ensuring that the issues that matter to immigrant Latino working families are addressed by elected officials. Historically Latino immigrants have been less active than other groups in the political process. SOL strategically focuses its efforts on motivating occasional voters to go to the election polls.
This election year state-wide SOL precinct workers contacted more than 76,000 voters. Through independent expenditure campaigns SOL supported candidates regardless of race or ethnicity who had a proven track record of addressing issues that matter to working families. This remarkable effort comes on the heels of SOL registering in the last year more than 40,000 new California voters.
Strengthening Our Lives thru Action, Participation and Education, is a partnership of progressive labor, faith and community organizations dedicated to increasing the civic participation of California’s immigrant communities.

Maria Elena Salinas: What next for Latino Clinton supporters?
Tags: Fresno, Hillary Clinton, Maria Elena Salinas
It might not be perfect, but the manner in which the presidential candidates are chosen in the United States works. We start out with several options, then narrow them down to two by process of elimination.
It’s probably one of the most democratic electoral systems in the world. Even so, it does have its downfalls.
When you have candidates from the same party running against each other, voters pick their favorites, but then when the primaries are over, they are forced to change their allegiance.”*

When the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals recently upheld an award of almost $1 million to a farmworker whose supervisor had raped her, farmworker advocates celebrated from the lettuce fields of California to the orange groves of Florida. According to the sexual harassment and retaliation suit filed against Harris Farms, a Fresno County agricultural giant, Olivia Tamayo’s supervisor raped her three times. The first attack occurred in his car when she accepted a ride to work. The second, under a stand of almond trees. The third, at her home while her husband was at work and her children asleep. The company’s solution, according to the suit: Reassign her to an isolated spot in a field nearer to her attacker’s house.
Tamayo’s ordeal, unfortunately, is not an isolated incident. The sexual harassment of female farmworkers has long been a dirty secret of migrant labor. Studies are sparse, but one by the Southern Poverty Law Center found that 90% of female farmworkers in California surveyed in 1993 said sexual harassment was a serious problem. Vulnerable because of their poverty, their limited English skills and often their immigration status, these women are easy prey. Harassers sometimes threaten to report illegal immigrants or their relatives if victims do not remain silent, advocates say.”*

The Group Is Currently Preparing For This Summer’s Entire
43 Date Vans Warped Tour Across The U.S.
Digital Edition Of The Album Lands At Online Stores On May 20th.
“The boys from Barcelona hit the streets with [Wild Animals], a surprisingly confident and joyful collection of jaunty hooks and mondo beats that fully exploits all that the Pinker Tones hear and integrate in their port city.”
- THE WASHINGTON POST
“This group from Barcelona has developed a brilliant way to bring people to a musical climax thanks to their genius fusion of languages and rhythms in an electronic mood. ‘Wild Animals’ is one of the most amazing albums of the year.“
- PEOPLE EN ESPAÑOL
“Like some sort of hipster virus, the Pinker Tones’ poppy electronica has spread from the duo’s hometown of Barcelona.”
- BILLBOARD
“Barcelona’s Pinker Tones are just flat-out unbelievably fucking great…they rate as one of the finest exercises in pop confection currently working in the known universe.”
- LA WEEKLY
The critics are already beginning to buzz about Barcelona-based electronic act The Pinker Tones‘ new album, ‘Wild Animals‘, in advance of its release on June 3rd. The album will be available at digital outlets on May 20th. The dynamic duo’s third U.S. album continues the explosive momentum sparked by their 2006 debut ‘The Million Colour Revolution’ and 2007 remix album ‘More Colours!’. The group is currently preparing for their set this summer on the entire 43 date Vans Warped Tour across the U.S. (see tour dates below). They will perform an extended set each night in the Skull Candy electronic music tent.

Second annual symposium born of results-driven national program, offering students educational workshops, leadership opportunities, and mentorship support throughout the year
San Francisco, CA - An inspiring and expanding program to help develop and grow the next generation of Hispanic professionals is returning to the Bay Area in June to guide at least 100 promising high school students on a path to achieving college degrees and careers.
“In this region - one of the largest and most diverse in the country - programs like this are critical to helping young Hispanics to plan and be proud of their contributions,” Stonebraker said.
“Building this knowledge to increase college attendance is crucial to the future health care workforce,” according to Melissa Aboytes, coordinator of youth workforce programs for Kaiser Permanente, a lead partner of the Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium. Kaiser Permanente is organizing volunteers and will conduct workshops on health careers at the symposium, with a focus on growing opportunities in the medical field that are not as recognizable but in need of attention.
“The Hispanic College Fund depends on its community partners to help reach students and mobilize support from local donations to volunteers,” said Fernando Barrueta, CEO of the Hispanic College Fund. “We bring national sponsorships and visibility to the communities that we serve - and national opportunities for students - but we rely on the local support to make the program as successful and personal as it is. It truly will help shape the next workforce of scientific and technical graduates in these communities,” Barrueta said.
“We just cannot just sit back and enjoy our title or professional status. All of you young professionals - we need you - we need you to be out there inspiring our young people,” she said. “We have a lot of work to do. Get out there and let them see that you’re successful and involved, and you’ll be changing someone’s life.”
* Have a minimum 2.5 GPA
* Are Hispanic
* Have completed the application to participate
* Are rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors in high school
* Are residents of Alameda, Contra Costa, Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Solano, or San Mateo counties
* Pay a $10 participation fee (which can be waived upon request)
In addition, from 100 to 150 community volunteers will be engaged to assist with everything from logistics coordination to talent show judging. Approximately 20 college student resident advisors also are being recruited to help with the symposium management.
In order to track the results of each symposium, the Hispanic College Fund will conduct pre- and post-event surveys to determine whether students show a marked improvement in their understanding of the college application process, the financial aid process, and the role that community involvement and high school academic achievement play in the college preparation process. Also, the Hispanic College Fund will conduct a longitudinal study of its student participants to track how their college preparation improves, whether they go to college, the caliber of the college they attend, and the kind of career they pursue upon graduation.
In early May, the website of the Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium will be released. For more information on the national Hispanic Youth Symposium, go to www.hispanicyouth.org.

Hispanics to march as debate simmers - Fresno
Tags: activist, Fresno, immigrant rights
Valley Hispanics will march for immigrant rights today in downtown Fresno for the third year in a row. But activists are divided on whether another march is the best way to push for changes in federal immigration law.
Fresno’s march is among a number of immigrant demonstrations planned nationwide in major cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago. Unlike 2006, when marches drew hundreds of thousands of demonstrators, there’s no hot-button immigration bill this year.
But some advocates say the marches have run their course. Those advocates say immigrants should press their case more directly with federal lawmakers and the candidates running for president.”*

Cuba is fertile territory for ‘Surrender Tree’

The stories and history of Cuba have provided Clovis poet and novelist Margarita Engle with a rich reservoir of inspiring tales — and she returns to those roots for her latest book, “The Surrender Tree.”
As she did with her previous award-winning volume — “The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano” from 2006 — Engle writes her newest book in free-verse poetry.”*

Pretty as princesses, 15 special young ladies from across the United States and Puerto Rico celebrated a Dream-Come-True Quinceanera on Thursday at Disneyland Resort, with a grand red-carpet entrance, an enchanting ceremony in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle and a pixie-dusted dinner party with family and friends. Royal and resplendent, these lucky girls marked their cultural milestone with a dash of Disney magic, as part of the Year of a Million Dreams celebration.

A tradition in the Latin community, a Quinceanera is a young woman’s celebration of her 15th birthday, which marks the transition from a child to a young woman. It is commemorated in a way that distinguishes it from her other birthdays.
The royal evening ceremony at Disneyland Resort was filled with opulence, pageantry and tradition. It began with a dream-come-true moment for any teenage girl — a celebrity escort along a red carpet that led to the famous Sleeping Beauty Castle. The stellar lineup of stars included Cristina Saralegui, host of “The Cristina Show;” Andy Garcia, acclaimed actor and producer; pop singer Frankie J; actor-dancer Cristian De La Fuente of “Dancing with the Stars” and others.
In the castle forecourt, each birthday girl was greeted by Disney characters and prepared for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. Each young lady, elegant and enchanting in her ball gown, danced a special waltz with her father, stepped from her flat shoes into Cinderella-like glass slippers and received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from her mother.
Following the official ceremony in the Castle Forecourt, each of the princesses joined her special guests at a private dinner party in Fantasyland Theater. The unforgettable party included the traditional Quinceanera cutting of the cake and doll ceremony, two important symbols of the transition from childhood to adulthood.
The magic began on Tuesday when the girls arrived, ready to prepare for the grand gala with dress fittings, rehearsals, a princess etiquette seminar, an ice cream social at the Disneyland Dream Suite and plenty of photo opportunities. After two days of fun, bonding and magical anticipation, they were ready for the spotlight and the delightful Quinceanera celebration.
The girls are from California, Florida, Arizona, New York, Texas, Illinois and Puerto Rico. Amethyst Lisa Cristina Martinez of Miami imagined this day for weeks and said, “Dreams aren’t impossible.” Kassandra Hernandez of Sacramento, Ca., was thrilled to celebrate her coming-of-age with family, a welcome joy after several recent family hardships. And Brenda Prado of Fresno, Ca., said her parents, who are farm workers, were ecstatic that their daughter could enjoy a magic
