After he was shot in the head and left for dead in May, Latin pop star Fabio ”Estefano” Salgado discovered his financial manager had disappeared with at least $2.8 million of his earnings, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday.
The suit does not spell out that Jose Luis Gil had any involvement in the attempted murder of Estefano, producer of hits for Latin music heavyweights like Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and Shakira.
But the suit does say alleged gunman Francisco S. Oliveira “has extensive ties to Gil, and Estefano employed this individual at Gil’s suggestion and insistence.””*
Two cities diverge on immigration - New Haven and Hazleton
“New Haven and Hazleton, Pa., two Northeastern cities led by descendants of Italian immigrants, are just 200 miles from each other on a map. But they are worlds apart when it comes to dealing with illegal immigration.
New Haven“s John DeStefano, a Democrat, has embraced illegal immigrants as an important part of New Haven“s economic and social fabric. The city of 125,000 already prohibits police from asking about their immigration status.
How did two Northeastern cities wind up on opposite sides of the issue? One main reason given is that New Haven, the home of Yale University, has a long and rich history of liberal politics, unlike Hazleton, a conservative city in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, 95 miles from Philadelphia.”
Estefano begged shooter to spare him
“A Latin songwriter said he begged for his life before his handyman shot and critically wounded him at his waterfront mansion, according to court documents.”

New Haven approves ID cards for illegal immigrants, others - Connecticut
“The Board of Aldermen overwhelmingly approved a plan Monday night that would allow the city to issue identification cards for illegal immigrants and others.
The card would be recognized as official identification within city limits, allowing illegal immigrants to open bank accounts. By a vote of 25-1, the board agreed to accept more than $250,000 in private funds from the First City Fund Corporation to implement the so-called “Elm City Resident Cards,” proposed by Mayor John DeStefano Jr.”
“Jennifer Lopez recently said that her first ever Spanish language album Como Ama Una Mujer was a longtime dream for her to accomplish. And today her beloved project storms the Billboard Latin chart nailing the #1 spot in its first week while also making a remarkable #10 debut on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart. She also makes history with the highest sales of a Spanish album debut, inclusive of English and Latin artists. With this chart-topping debut, Jennifer joins an elite number of only five artists to ever land in the top ten with Spanish-language albums; they include Shakira, Maná, Don Omar and Selena. In addition, Como Ama Una Mujer sold more in one week digitally than any other Spanish-language release ever. Early chart numbers from overseas show amazing debuts in non-Spanish speaking countries like Switzerland #1, Italy #2 and Germany #4.
The video for her first single “Que Hiciste” has been in the MTV TRL countdown for the last seven weeks. For the month of April, Jennifer will be the Artist of the Month on MTV’s new Latin-focused network MTV Tr3s.
Next week, Jennifer will appear on AMERICAN IDOL as the special guest on the Latin-themed show airing Tuesday, April 10th and will perform her single “Que Hiciste” live on Wednesday, April 11th marking the first time an artist will sing entirely in Spanish on the show. AMERICAN IDOL is the #1 English-Language TV show for Hispanics.
Last week, Jennifer visited her hometown Bronx, NY to meet over thousands of fans who turned out to celebrate her new album. In early March, she held a special performance to give fans a sneak peak of her album at a Miami arena show. Internationally, Jennifer performed on major TV shows including the Echo Awards in Germany and Operacion Triunfo and Mira Quien Baila in Spain.
Como Ama Una Mujer (How a Woman Loves), her sixth album, is sung entirely in Spanish and was produced by Marc Anthony, Julio Reyes and Estefano. The album, a true labor of love for the artist, is a state-of-the-art Latin pop effort that marks Lopez’s growth into a new musical maturity. López has recorded in Spanish before – her first demo was called “Vivir Sin Ti,” and in 1999 she had a massive international duet hit with Marc Anthony, “No Me Ames.”
Following her breakthrough Golden Globe nominated role as Selena and box office hits OUT OF SIGHT and THE CELL, in 2000 Jennifer Lopez kicked off a stellar musical career with her debut album On The 6. The album which has sold in excess of 6.7 million worldwide, spawned numerous hits including “Waiting For Tonight,” “If You Had My Love,” and “Let’s Get Loud.” In the same year, Jennifer won the Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite New Music Artist and one of many ALMA Awards for Female Entertainer of the Year. In 2001, Jennifer Lopez made history when she became the first woman to have the number one movie and number one album in the same week when THE WEDDING PLANNER, co-starring Matthew McConaughey, was the nation’s top-grossing film and her second album, “J.Lo,” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. The album – which has now sold over 8 million worldwide – led by smash hit “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” was followed up by two number one Hot 100 pop hits “Ain’t It Funny” and “I’m Real” featuring Ja Rule. “
Former Miss Cuba Jessica Mayorga steps in as Mayor’s spokesperson - New Haven, Connecticut
“Jessica Mayorga has not been a full-time resident of New Haven for even 14 days, but she is already serving as the voice of a mayor who has been in office for more than 14 years.
She steps into the job of mayoral spokeswoman at a critical time for Mayor John DeStefano Jr., who has drawn political heat in recent weeks following the arrest of two New Haven Police Department officers last month. The appointment of Mayorga, the 1997 Miss Cuba, may also help DeStefano win the support of Latinos in New Haven, though some members of the community expressed doubt that a new spokeswoman can change the political allegiances of neighborhoods that have not had historically strong relationships with City Hall.”
New Haven Welcomes a Booming Population of Immigrants, Legal or Not
“The people have been arriving here for years from Mexico, Guatemala, Jamaica and Ecuador, some staying just a few months, but more settling in for years.
The way Mayor John DeStefano saw it, there were basically two choices: City officials could look the other way, as if the change were not happening, or they could embrace the transformation, doing whatever was possible to welcome the newcomers.”
Mayor Pledges Immigrant ID Cards, Take 2 - New Haven, Connecticut
“One day before a landmark immigrant protection policy takes effect at the city police department, Latino rights advocates delivered a giant Christmas card to the mayor, with thanks and Christmas wishes for further protection. Members of the grassroots Latino advocacy group Unidad Latina en Acción marched up the stairs to the mayor’s office Wednesday morning to deliver their agenda for 2007. The mayor slipped out of a meeting to greet the crowd gathered in his office.”
“One role the state can play in addressing illegal immigration is to issue ID cards, said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, the Democratic candidate for governor.
“They are a ready victim class. They have no Social Security number so they have no bank account, so they keep a large amount of cash on hand,” DeStefano said. “Because of that, they become victims of crimes, but they don’t report the crime to police because they are afraid of what will happen.”
Democratic candidates for Governor of Connecticut seek Latinos’ support during debate
“The two Democratic candidates for governor attempted to woo Latino voters during a debate Tuesday, with New Haven Mayor John DeStefano claiming he has closer ties to the community than Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy.
It marked one of the few clashes between the two mayors, who are vying for the party’s nomination and will likely wage a primary to win the chance to challenge Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell in November.
The Puerto Rican Affairs Commission’s Toastmasters Club sponsored the debate, which touched on immigration, health care, employment and other issues important to the Hispanic community.”
