Hard-Line Policies Prompt Immigration Meetings - Escondidio, California

“The Escondido chief of kicked off a series of town hall meetings with community members, addressing immigration policies and other issues.

Escondido has made national headlines because of its controversial policies on illegal immigrants. The first meeting in the series was held at a community center in East Escondido on Tuesday night.

“I know there’s a lot of misinformation, because I can say repeatedly, ‘If you’re a victim or a witness, we don’t care about your [immigration] status, we’re here to protect you,’ ” Maher told the crowd. “So what we’re trying to do is explain in a very black-and-white way that if you don’t commit a crime, we truly do not care about your immigration status. If you commit a crime, that rule doesn’t apply. I’ll do anything I can to get you out of Escondido.”"*

Escondido chamber takes new approach to recruiting Latinos - California

“Recruiting Latino business owners has long been a struggle for the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, but chamber officials expressed optimism Tuesday about a new effort to attract skeptical Latino merchants to the chamber.

Because of cultural differences, Latino merchants can feel intimidated or marginalized at traditional chamber events, chamber officials said. So they decided this fall to establish a special Latino Business Committee, which brings together prospective Latino members with Latino merchants who are already chamber members.

“There are a lot of Latino businessmen and women who are just waiting to get involved in the local business community,” said Alfredo Velasco, executive director of the Palomar Family YMCA. “This is really an awareness campaign aimed at them. Latino businesses are a large part of our community, but they are not a big part of the chamber.”"*

Cuban Exile Lives American Dream as Janitorial Franchise Owner

Tags: , , , , ,

“Five years ago, Carlos Herrera was working as a store manager for an auto repair shop in Escondido by day and moonlighting for a small cleaning service three nights a week when he saw a TV ad that stopped him in his tracks. It showed a man doing the same kind of commercial cleaning work that Herrera was doing, but the man was working for himself as the owner of a Coverall Cleaning Concepts franchise. Herrera said to himself, “That could be me.”

Three years later, Herrera discovered that Coverall Cleaning Concepts was selling franchises in the San Diego area, and he decided to put his money where his mouth was. The irony: his family had fled Cuba when Herrera was 13, forcing his parents to abandon a thriving restaurant business and instead mop floors until 2 or 3 am to pay the bills in their new homeland. Herrera had promised his parents that he would never have a janitorial career, but he defended his choice with a simple explanation. “*

“The 15th birthday celebration, or quinceañera, is a significant event for girls in Latin-American cultures. Like a wedding, the party can include a church service and an elaborate reception. It’s an occasion to dress up in a fancy gown, rent a limousine and say goodbye to one’s childhood.

Now more than seven years past that milestone, Natalie Richards is working on something just as big and complex. With backing from friends and family, she has started a company to help plan such parties for hundreds, or thousands — or as many people as she can accommodate.

The 22-year-old Escondido resident is president of Influential Hispanic Marketing Inc. and is the driving force behind a bilingual Web site called QuinceClub.com. The site launched in June.”*

Fire and I.C.E. Hit San Diego (A Mensajero del Pueblo Brief)

“First came Hurricane Katrina, bringing a deluge of water and displaying for the world the double standard as to what is considered a human being in the United States. One in which Whites were not seen as looters, but as courageous souls trying to survive and feed their families, while the African community was portrayed as criminals looting and pillaging during a national disaster.

Over the last few days, fire ravaged the rural hills and lush vegetation of San Diego County, and again, we are witnesses to the double standard as to what a human being is. Whites, again, are seen as victims of a disaster, while this time it is the Mexican and other Latin-American communities who are portrayed as criminal.

This past Sunday afternoon, various community based organizations from throughout San Diego met to share information in regards to incidents occurring during the fire. Among these organizations was the Human Rights Committee: Digna Ochoa, The Raza Rights Coalition, The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Mexicanos Unidos en Defensa del Pueblo (MUDP), The Coalition for Justice, Peace and Dignity, The Human Rights Committees from Civic Heights, Vista and Escondido. “*

The chamber’s new Latino Business Committee held its second organizational meeting yesterday over pastries and coffee. Two dozen entrepreneurs decided to begin meeting monthly and draft a mission statement. They said they also want to address cultural barriers that could keep the group from recruiting more members.

Modeled after a similar Latino group created by the Vista chamber last year, the committee will focus on helping businesses grow and mentoring Latino youth. Committee members may join the larger chamber now or in the future.”
