Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Jr. to Receive Award from Miami’s Beacon Council

"The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s official economic development organization, is honoring Miami residents Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Jr., founders of Estefan Enterprises, with the Jay Malina Award for their lifetime achievements and notable contributions to the growth of the arts, entertainment and hospitality industries in Miami-Dade County. Every year, The Beacon Council celebrates the diversity and entrepreneurship of its local economy by honoring a group of leading businesses and executives who through their work play a significant role in the areas of job creation, business expansion, corporate citizenship and leadership in their respective industries. The Seventh Annual Beacon Awards will be held on Thursday, March 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami Beach, Florida.

The Jay Malina Award is named in honor of the late founder and co-chair of the One Community One Goal® project, Jay Malina. This year's honorees, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Jr. of Estefan Enterprises, Inc., represent the entrepreneurial spirit of the multi-cultural, multi-lingual people of Miami-Dade County. The new award is part of The Beacon Council’s Fashion & Lifestyle Initiative which seeks to raise Miami-Dade County’s profile as a Fashion & Lifestyle Industry hub.

The City of Miami and Mayor Manny Diaz: The City of Miami has begun laying the “green” groundwork for protecting our community’s environment, at the same time ensuring that the urban areas are more livable and sustainable for the future growth and economic health of Miami-Dade County.

Experience Aviation Inc.: Its founder, Barrington Irving, is the youngest solo and first black pilot to fly around the globe. He created the school in Opa-locka, Florida to address the shortage of youth pursuing careers in the fields of aviation and aerospace.

David Lawrence Jr.: Retired Miami Herald publisher and philanthropist who upon retirement, took up the cause of improving pre-K quality education and other initiatives that affect early childhood development in Miami-Dade. "St. Jude Children's Research Hospital(R), the premier pediatric cancer research center, celebrated its sixth annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels & Stars Gala by honoring Emilio and Gloria Estefan for their commitment to international healthcare, the local community, and the music and entertainment industry. The star-studded event took place on May 17, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.

On the red carpet, St. Jude patients rubbed elbows with some of the brightest stars from the Latin music and entertainment industry who came to support Daisy Fuentes, celebrity chair, and her fight against childhood cancer. More than 550 guests were treated to live performances by Luis Fonsi, Jeremías and Valeria Gastaldi. During the night's entertainment, Emilio Estefan took to the stage alongside Victor Manuelle for an unforgettable impromptu performance. Among the other celebrity guests who came to support St. Jude were Candela Ferro, Khotan Fernandez, Fanny Lu, Ana María Canseco, Lili Estefan, Génesis Rodríguez, María Celeste Arrarás and philanthropist Adrienne Arsht.

"It was truly wonderful to see the Hispanic community of South Florida come together to support St. Jude," said John P. Moses, Chief Executive Officer for ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude. "Thanks to the supporters and sponsors of this gala, St. Jude is able to provide hope for sick children and their families from all over the world."

The money raised from this event will help St. Jude continue its groundbreaking research and lifesaving care for children from across the country and around the world who are battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Two other special guests for the evening were St. Jude patients Lucas Solberg and Stephan Boehme Gutierrez, who shared their story of survival with guests. The gala also included a cocktail reception and silent auction, which included a shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue and dinner for 10 with artist Romero Britto.

Gustavo Santaolalla to Be Honored as BMI Icon at 15th Annual Latin Awards Ceremony

"Grammy and Oscar award-winning composer and producer Gustavo Santaolalla will become a BMI Icon Thursday, June 12, at the performing right organization's 15th annual Latin Awards. Staged at the Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles and hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Assistant Vice President, Latin Music, Delia Orjuela, the black-tie, invitation-only gala will also recognize the songwriters and publishers of the past year's top BMI Latin songs played on American radio and television.

The BMI Icon award is bestowed on creators who have had a "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." An all-star musical tribute will pay homage to the achievements of Gustavo Santaolalla, who joins an elite list of past honorees that includes Latin music titans Los Tigres Del Norte, Juan Luis Guerra and Carlos Santana, along with legends Willie Nelson, Brian Wilson, Isaac Hayes, Paul Simon, Dolly Parton and the late James Brown.

In addition to the Icon tribute, the ceremony will also recognize the Latin Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year. Previous honorees include Latin superstars Juanes, Shakira, Estefano, Gloria & Emilio Estefan, Wisin & Yandel, Luis Miguel and Cristian Castro.

“Los Zeros” style is eclectic

"It's getting late in the decade, and we don't even have a proper name for it. There is a strong sense of how we think of pop music history in terms of "the '70s," "the '80s," and even "the '90s," and Latin music has its parallel moments - think the Fania All-Stars, Julio Iglesias, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Juan Luis Guerra, the Buena Vista Social Club and, finally, Daddy Yankee. It's time we locate contemporary Latin music trends in something called "Los Zeros."

What characterizes the era of Los Zeros? One trend, urban pop, has its roots in the '90s, when rap and dancehall en Español laid the groundwork for reggaetón. The influence of '70s and '80s styles such as reggae and post-disco R&B crept gradually into Latin music until a new hybrid of polyrhythmic Caribbean beats and slow-jam aesthetics created the urban pop sound. Now, what once seemed separate genres - hard-core reggaetón, romantic pop, salsa, merengue, cumbia and bachata - are all part of a new fusion."
