"From Latin Jazz and Mambo to Salsa, Tejano, Chicano Rock, Latin pop, and Reggaeton, Latin Music USA tells the story of the rise of new American music forged from powerful Latin roots and reveals the often overlooked influence of Latin music on Jazz, Hip Hop, Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll - and on all of American culture. It's a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across time and across musical genres to embrace the exciting hybrid sounds created by Latinos, musical fusions that have deeply enriched popular music in the US over more than five decades.

The series features memorable characters and vibrant music and dance showcasing the impressive range of Latin music in the US, including, among others, Salsa greats Willy Colon and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sound found in much of sixties Rock and Roll from the Drifters to Motown to the Rolling Stones; the genius of Texas accordion player Flaco Jimenez; Carlos Santana; Linda Ronstadt; the legendary Chicano rock band Los Lobos; megastars Gloria and Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; and Reggaeton performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon. The life experiences of these and many other unforgettable artists will reveal how Latinos have reinvented music in the United States and forged new identities within this country, while never losing sight of their own rich traditions.

Produced by a world-class production team at WGBH and the BBC, Latin Music USA "invites the audience into the vibrant musical conversation between Latinos and non-Latinos that has helped shape the history of popular music in the United States," says series producer Adriana Bosch. The multimedia project is anchored by a four-hour documentary series that premieres on January 21, 2009 on PBS stations nationwide.

"Latin Music USA has the potential to be a cultural milestone, advancing Americans' understanding of Latino rhythm and music as a dynamic player in shaping American society past, present and future," said John F. Wilson, senior vice president and chief television programming executive, PBS. "And music, the universal language, communicates this phenomenon in a most irresistible way.""

"It's getting late in the decade, and we don't even have a proper name for it. There is a strong sense of how we think of pop music history in terms of "the '70s," "the '80s," and even "the '90s," and Latin music has its parallel moments - think the Fania All-Stars, Julio Iglesias, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Juan Luis Guerra, the Buena Vista Social Club and, finally, Daddy Yankee. It's time we locate contemporary Latin music trends in something called "Los Zeros."

What characterizes the era of Los Zeros? One trend, urban pop, has its roots in the '90s, when rap and dancehall en Español laid the groundwork for reggaetón. The influence of '70s and '80s styles such as reggae and post-disco R&B crept gradually into Latin music until a new hybrid of polyrhythmic Caribbean beats and slow-jam aesthetics created the urban pop sound. Now, what once seemed separate genres - hard-core reggaetón, romantic pop, salsa, merengue, cumbia and bachata - are all part of a new fusion."

NOTES: This will more than likely be my last post until I have driven 2000+ miles back to Missouri. This time I am going the southern route through Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, Dallas and then I am not sure what route I will take. Los Angeles has been fun, interesting and productive, I will be back. My adventure continues

Press Releases - Iif you are still sending me press releases, you need to check out CIMS because I get 1000s press releases a month and most I have to ignore because of time. It is to your advantage to utilize CIMS.

Would anyone be interested in a ad-free paid subscription model? Say you get a cleaned up version of HispanicTips for $24 a year. If there is enough interest, I could implement something like this. - Gracias, Tomás

"As a child in Havana, Emilio Estefan stunned his family when he proclaimed he wanted to pursue a career in music. Despite no musical background, Estefan doggedly pursued his passion after moving to the U.S. as a teenager. Three decades later, Estefan is a major figure in Latin music, with 14 Latin Grammys to his credit. Both an expert and enthusiastic champion of a vibrant musical genre he clearly loves, Estefan has now channeled his passion into a documentary called "90 Millas," which he shot while recording the album of the same name with his wife, recording star Gloria Estefan. Emilio spoke to The Hollywood Reporter's Kevin Cassidy about his foray into filmmaking and the need to preserve the history of Cuban music."
