Latin Music USA - A Multi-Media Event Premieres January 21, 2009 on PBS

“From Latin Jazz and Mambo to Salsa, Tejano, Chicano Rock, Latin pop, and Reggaeton, Latin Music USA tells the story of the rise of new American music forged from powerful Latin roots and reveals the often overlooked influence of Latin music on Jazz, Hip Hop, Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll - and on all of American culture. It’s a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across time and across musical genres to embrace the exciting hybrid sounds created by Latinos, musical fusions that have deeply enriched popular music in the US over more than five decades.

The series features memorable characters and vibrant music and dance showcasing the impressive range of Latin music in the US, including, among others, Salsa greats Willy Colon and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sound found in much of sixties Rock and Roll from the Drifters to Motown to the Rolling Stones; the genius of Texas accordion player Flaco Jimenez; Carlos Santana; Linda Ronstadt; the legendary Chicano rock band Los Lobos; megastars Gloria and Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; and Reggaeton performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon. The life experiences of these and many other unforgettable artists will reveal how Latinos have reinvented music in the United States and forged new identities within this country, while never losing sight of their own rich traditions.

Produced by a world-class production team at WGBH and the BBC, Latin Music USA “invites the audience into the vibrant musical conversation between Latinos and non-Latinos that has helped shape the history of popular music in the United States,” says series producer Adriana Bosch. The multimedia project is anchored by a four-hour documentary series that premieres on January 21, 2009 on PBS stations nationwide.

“Latin Music USA has the potential to be a cultural milestone, advancing Americans’ understanding of Latino rhythm and music as a dynamic player in shaping American society past, present and future,” said John F. Wilson, senior vice president and chief television programming executive, PBS. “And music, the universal language, communicates this phenomenon in a most irresistible way.”

“Directed by Emilio Estefan, two new commercials show Thalía attracting a Hispanic audience with her new song “Ten paciencia”"*

From an e-mail I rec’d: “

I wanted to pass on the scoop of what went into the creation of Thalia’s Best Coverage campaign for AT&T. The ad–which gives viewers a taste of her new single Ten Paciencia–was directed by none other than Emilio Estefan. The ads themselves are very Thalia, and convey her upbeat personality and the new vibe of her upcoming album.

Thalia has joined forces with AT&T in a multi-faceted program (includes radio, a photo shoot, and out of home) for its Best Coverage campaign, to exemplify AT&T’s commitment to offering the hottest in music and entertainment to Latinos. Hispanics are heavy wireless users as you know, and they all know Thalia, so what better way to deliver the most relevant content to its customers than by supporting the new record.

“Los Zeros” style is eclectic

“It’s getting late in the decade, and we don’t even have a proper name for it. There is a strong sense of how we think of pop music history in terms of “the ’70s,” “the ’80s,” and even “the ’90s,” and Latin music has its parallel moments - think the Fania All-Stars, Julio Iglesias, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Juan Luis Guerra, the Buena Vista Social Club and, finally, Daddy Yankee. It’s time we locate contemporary Latin music trends in something called “Los Zeros.”

What characterizes the era of Los Zeros? One trend, urban pop, has its roots in the ’90s, when rap and dancehall en Español laid the groundwork for reggaetón. The influence of ’70s and ’80s styles such as reggae and post-disco R&B crept gradually into Latin music until a new hybrid of polyrhythmic Caribbean beats and slow-jam aesthetics created the urban pop sound. Now, what once seemed separate genres - hard-core reggaetón, romantic pop, salsa, merengue, cumbia and bachata - are all part of a new fusion.”*

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

“Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. (SBS) (NASDAQ:SBSA) and MEGA TV Channel 22 announced today that the famous Cuban music producer, Emilio Estefan Jr, will guest star on “Bayly,” MEGA TV’s version of “Larry King Live,” this Tuesday, December 4 at 10:00 PM EST and at 11:00 PM PST on DirecTV Channel 405.

In addition to being a music and film producer, Emilio is also a member of President George W. Bush’s Committee of the Arts and Humanities and is responsible for coordinating artistic and cultural events for the White House.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to produce events for the White House,” said Estefan. “It gives me the opportunity to showcase Latin roots to leading politicians and dignitaries from all over the world.”

Emilio Estefan has recently completed his documentary “90 Millas” (“90 Miles”), which will debut at The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) on December 13. “90 Millas” represents the distance between Cuba and Florida and the film will examine the experience of Cuban musicians who have taken refuge in the United States as they feel so far away from their homeland, despite it being a short distance.

During the celebration of the documentary’s premier, Estefan’s wife, Gloria Estefan, will perform several songs from the album produced by Emilio, which has the same name as the documentary and recently reached number one on the Latin Billboard Charts.

During his career, Estefan has received 14 Grammy Awards and was honored as the first “Person of the Year” by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in 2000 for his work as music producer. Estefan has also been instrumental in the development and production of the Latin Grammy Awards. In addition, Emilio is the co-publisher of “Ocean Drive En Español,” one of the leading Hispanic lifestyle magazines.

The drive and passion that Emilio has for his music has also characterized his successful foray into being an investor and developer in the hospitality industry. In the early 1990s, he opened “Larios on the Beach” in Miami. Currently, The Estefans own Bongos Cuban Café in Orlando’s Walt Disney Resort and in the American Airlines Arena in Miami, achieving the same level of success.

As a teenager who migrated from his birthplace of Cuba to the United States in the 1960s, Emilio experienced the cultural and racial differences that characterized the great migration to the United States.

“I can say, very respectfully, that I understand the gap between Latino and Anglo cultures,” Estefan said explaining his success. “My ability to work within the gap between these two cultures has allowed me to create my work,” said Estefan.

In addition to 14 Grammy’s, Emilio was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, where he received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award and was honored by the Former United States Secretary of State, Colin Powell. In 2005, he won the BMI Songwriter of the Year Award and got his personal star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. Estefan also has Honorary Doctorate degrees from Barry University, University of Miami, and Florida International University.

Emilio and Gloria are also actively involved in the community. The Gloria Estefan Foundation was established with the purpose of supporting various organizations, geared towards research and finding cures for all different types of illnesses that effect children all over the world.

“It is important to give back a part of what you have received,” said Emilio. “That’s why Gloria and I are always getting involved with the Latino and Anglo community.”

A musician, producer, creator, visionary, husband, father, friend and an influential person of the community, Emilio Estefan Jr is a true symbol of the new Latino.

Do not miss the great Emilio Estefan Jr. during an exclusive interview on “Bayly” this Tuesday, December 4, at 10:00 PM EST on MEGA TV and at 11:00 PM PST on DirecTV’s Channel 405 – your favorite stations.

“Her father, José Fajardo, was the bodyguard to the wife of Cuban president Batista — but when Gloria was just 16 months old, Castro’s revolution forced the family to flee its homeland. José joined the United States Army and served as an officer in Vietnam, where he was exposed to Agent Orange. When he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, ten-year-old Gloria became his nurse and looked after her younger sister while her mother worked.

At 17, Gloria sang a few songs at a wedding. Though shy, she came to life on stage; soon she was the singer of that band, the Miami Sound Machine. She got more than a job. In the spring of 1978, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of Miami; a few months later, on her 22nd birthday, she married the band’s leader, Emilio Estefan, Jr.”

International Recording Artist and Musical Legend Gloria Estefan To Release New Spanish Language Album ‘90 Millas’ Available September 18, 2007 on Burgundy Records Featuring Famed Latin Guest Musicians Inclucing Carlos Santana, Sheila E., Jose Feliciano, Johnny Pacheco, Arturo Sandoval, La India, Cachao and Chocolate Estefan’s First Spanish Album in Seven Years

“SONY BMG Music Entertainment and Burgundy Records announce the release of GLORIA ESTEFAN’s new Spanish-language album, “90 MILLAS” — in stores September 18, 2007. Having sold over 70 million albums and recorded 24 albums, “90 Millas” brings Gloria back to where it all began — her roots. Produced by her husband, Emilio Estefan, the collection of newly recorded original Spanish language songs pays tribute to the roots of Cuban music while infusing a modern influence into the traditional rhythms.

The album also pays homage to the most influential and universally respected Latin musicians of the past fifty years. Some of the artists joining Estefan on this album include Grammy award winning artist CARLOS SANTANA, JOHNNY PACHECO (whom many refer to as the ‘godfather of salsa’), trumpet virtuoso ALFREDO ‘CHOCOLATE’ ARMENTEROS, conga drum diva SHEILA E., actor and musician ANDY GARCIA, and CACHAO who is credited as the creator of mambo.

This blend of musicians on “90 Millas” is historically significant on a number of levels. This is the first, and quite possibly the last time that all of these legendary artists will play together on one CD. The newly released first single, “No Llores” features guest performances by famed Latin musicians Carlos Santana, Sheila E. and Jose Feliciano; just one of the incredible collaborations found on this CD.

“It is so important for me to keep authentic Cuban sounds alive. All these great artists have changed the landscape of latin music and its an honor to have them on this album. I believe this album will expose a new generation to the richness of Cuban music,” says Estefan. “90 MILLAS” is a roots album. Its songs portray authentic Cuban sounds through upbeat danceable tracks like ‘Pintame’ and ‘Esta Fiesta No Va Acabar,’ to poignant ballads like ‘Yo No Cambiaria’ and celebratory tracks like ‘Cuando Cuba Sea Libre.’

Of ‘Cuando Cuba Sea Libre’ Gloria explains, “I hold this song very close to my heart. Its title translates to ‘the day Cuba is free.’ And it talks about what a celebration that will be … it’s going to be great for both the Cubans inside and outside because all we’re going to do is celebrate that now Cuba is free. We will celebrate the fact that people there have options open to them, that they have the ability to move forward into this century that they will enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy worldwide. It’s not a political song, it’s simply about a big party that will be had regardless of what may come after or how difficult things may be.”

Described by Gloria “an amazing explosion of rhythm,” the title track ‘90 Millas’ is Afro-Cuban — a genre typically recognized by its use of syncopated rhythm. Of dueting with La India on this track Gloria says, ” … It was a great feeling in the studio between her and me because we’ve wanted to work together for a long time. And this song particularly was very special to us because it is very representative of the wild rhythms and the differences that we have in the rhythms of Cuban music. I think it’s one of my favorite tracks.”

Norteño Music Legends Los Tigres del Norte to Be Honored as BMI Icons at 14th Annual Latin Awards Ceremony

“Multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-winning norteño music group Los Tigres del Norte will be honored as BMI Icons at the performing right organizations 14th Annual Latin Awards ceremony. The black-tie, invitation-only gala, set for Friday, March 23 at the Venetian Resort Hotel in Las Vegas, will also recognize the songwriters and publishers of the past years top BMI Latin songs played on American radio and television.

Los Tigres del Norte, who will be saluted that evening with an all-star musical tribute, are being honored as BMI Icons for their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” They join an elite list that includes such Latin music giants as Juan Luis Guerra and Carlos Santana, as well as music legends Brian Wilson, Isaac Hayes, Paul Simon, Dolly Parton and the late James Brown.

Formed in 1968 and signed to Fonovisa since the 80s, Los Tigres del Norte is the longest-running and most influential norteño music group in the history of the genre. “Los Jefes de Jefes” “the bosses of the bosses,” the nickname affectionately given to them by their loyal fans are renowned for their “corridos,” which depict timeless stories of the Mexican people and culture as well as the lives and struggles of Hispanic immigrants in the United States. In their nearly four-decade career, Los Tigres have recorded more than 55 albums, achieved worldwide sales in excess of 32 million copies, filled stadiums, and received critical praise around the globe.

An extensive list of accolades fills the veteran groups bio, including 22 BMI Latin Awards — highlighted by two consecutive Song of the Year wins 1996s “Golpes En El Corazón” and 1997s “Mi Sangre Prisonera”. Demonstrating the legendary groups continued role as genre leaders still to this day, Los Tigres saw a total of six different album titles reach Billboards Top Latin Albums chart in 2006, including the widely acclaimed “Historias Que Contar.” This latest chapter in Los Tigres del Nortes story-telling tradition spent multiple weeks as the No. 1 regional Mexican album in the country, won the 2006 Best Norteño Album Latin Grammy, and recently garnered yet another Grammy nomination for the pioneering group. The role of “Los Idolos del Pueblo” “Idols of the People” as they are also known as messengers for the immigrant community will surely continue with the planned late March release of their latest album, set to reach the public just as Los Tigres are honored as BMI Icons.

In addition to the Icon tribute, the 14th Annual BMI Latin Awards will also name a Latin Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Publisher of the Year. Previous honorees include Latin superstars Juanes, Shakira, Estéfano, Gloria & Emilio Estefan, Luis Miguel and more.”

“In an ongoing effort to provide exciting and relevant offerings to the Hispanic market, Sprint (NYSE: S) announced today as part of its “Twelve Days of Power Shopping” campaign, two Spanish-language mobile chat communities that will allow users to connect with Spanish speakers around the world. Available today, Sprint is offering Chat del Mundo from Jumbuck Entertainment Ltd. Sprint also plans to offer Muchachat from Cellfish Media. These new mobile chat communities complement a bilingual chat product called Latino Lounge that Sprint announced earlier this year and provide Sprint subscribers more ways to spread holiday cheer to others in Spanish – right from select Sprint phones.

“Sprint is at the forefront of providing the Hispanic community with innovative products and services, giving customers the power to connect in new and exciting ways,” said Isaac Mizrahi, director of multicultural marketing for Sprint. “Sprint’s launch of Chat del Mundo and Muchachat enable our Spanish-speaking customers to stay in touch with family and friends, as well as meet new people, whether they live across town or across the globe, just in time for the holidays.”

Chat del Mundo is a dedicated chat community for Spanish speakers with over 1 million worldwide users with images and video profiles. This Spanish mobile community is available in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and now the United States. Through Chat del Mundo, users are able to establish a profile, share images and video, and interact with and form a list of friends from around the world. Chat del Mundo is available now for $1.99 per month.*

Sprint also plans to offer Muchachat, which will allow Sprint customers to create profiles and choose avatars to represent them; search other users by age, location, description and nickname; and exchange messages with other members. Mucha Chat will be available at a charge of $0.50 for each message received through the service.*

In addition to providing Spanish chat services, Sprint was the first carrier to introduce a live Spanish TV service for wireless phones earlier this year with the launch of Sprint TV En Vivo and is actively demonstrating its commitment to the Hispanic community through two high-profile Latin music sponsorships that deliver Latin music fans with unique, Spanish-language wireless content, delivered via the high-speed Sprint Power Vision(SM) Network.
