Today a bipartisan coalition of major immigration reform leaders gathered on a national telephonic press conference to discuss the decisive political impact of the Latino and immigrant vote in the mid-term elections. Latino voters made clear that they want real solutions on immigration reform and substantive leadership from Congress. They want leaders in both parties to take on the DREAM Act, AgJOBS and comprehensive immigration reform – and Congress should view the lame duck session as their first opportunity - as a result of the political landscape shaped by Latino voters.

Tuesday’s elections exposed that Democrats and Republicans can’t win if they don’t engage Latino voters with the right positions on immigration reform, which has become a litmus test issue for these voters. The results also revealed the growing power of the Latino electorate who want real solutions on immigration reform, not trumped up rhetoric and demagoguery from some or empty promises from others.

Eliseo Medina, International Secretary-Treasurer of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), whose organization participated in massive Latino voter engagement efforts, explained what drove immigrant and Latino voters to the polls. “When attacked, Latino voters surge,” said Medina. “There is no question that campaigns characterized by deep disrespect of Latino voters fueled turnout across the Western states—and played the decisive role in re-electing Senator Reid in Nevada, electing Senator Bennet and Governor Hickenlooper in Colorado and Governor Brown and Senator Boxer in California. Like all Americans, the #1 issue that matters to Latino voters is jobs and the economy. But the issue of immigration—which has been characterized by hateful, deeply disrespectful rhetoric in the past year—comes as a very close second. In the coming year, Latino voters will be looking very closely at how a Republican-led Congress addresses immigration and a host of other key issues.”

The message from the Latino electorate contained lessons for both parties. While Latino voters nationwide favored Democrats over Republicans 2-1 according to the Pew Hispanic Center, and 3-1 ratio in some states, according to Latino Decisions, the next Congress will see some new Latino Republicans. In Florida, David Rivera won an open House seat, and Marco Rubio won the vacant U.S. Senate seat.

Ana Navarro, a Republican political strategist, pointed out, “Latino voters cannot be considered a monolithic partisan voting bloc, but should be considered swing voters in key states like Florida. Tone does matter.” Navarro continued, “Democrats need to remember the promises they have made to Hispanics and cannot afford not to keep those promises. Republicans cannot afford to allow anti-immigrant and anti-Hispanic rhetoric - by a few - to be perceived as the face of the Republican Party. Republican Leadership must control the tone of the debate and see it as an opportunity to show constructive bi-partisanship. As shown by local and statewide races, immigrant voters remain up for grabs.”

The lame duck session is the first opportunity for both parties to prove that they can work together to deliver real solutions to the broken immigration system in the form of AgJOBS, and the DREAM Act. Senators Reid and Durbin have indicated their willingness to address the DREAM Act in a lame duck session, and Senator Feinstein has called for action on AgJOBS.

“Now is the time for Congress to acknowledge its role in creating the current farm labor crisis and to offer a real and lasting solution,” stated United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez. “It is time to acknowledge the dignity of the farm labor workforce and ensure the safety and abundance of America’s food supply by passing the AgJOBS bill.”

Craig J. Regelbrugge of the American Nursery and Landscape Association, and Co-Chair for the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform concurred, "Congress should take immediate action on common sense AgJOBS legislation. More delay and inaction from elected leaders has made the labor crisis in the agricultural sector even worse, undermined the economy and stifled our recovery. AgJOBS is a common sense policy that business and labor leaders agree is good for agriculture, good for workers, and good for the economy. It's time to pass the AgJOBS bill."

“The DREAM Act has always garnered bipartisan support since it was first introduced almost 10 years ago,” said Carlos Saavedra, National Coordinator of the United We DREAM Network. “The United We DREAM Network represents thousands and thousands of undocumented youth around the country, and we are all on the same page with the greater immigrant rights movement on what needs to happen now during the lame-duck and beyond. Now is the time for Congress to pass the DREAM Act.”

“Congress has an opportunity right now to move the nation forward, and we will remind them of that and fight for any path that can responsibly legalize undocumented immigrants, strengthen the economy, and strengthen our nation,” said Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum and Chair of the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign. “As political strategists and pundits pour over the mid-term election results to divine what it all means, one bright shining truth has already emerged. Immigrant and Latino voters are a growing segment of the electorate around the country, in size and importance. The Latino electorate put both parties on notice: Deliver on immigration reform.”Curated by HispanicTips :: Hispanic & Latino Redefined.
