"Following through on its commitment to empower communities by way of education and global economic opportunity programs, The Western Union Foundation and Western Union Agent, Irv Barr Management, today donated $90,000 to The Confederation of Mexican Federations (CONFEMEX) scholarship program through the Foundation’s Agent Giving Circle program.

CONFEMEX, an immigrant led membership organization formed by nine Mexican hometown federations based in Chicago, also has pledged to contribute an additional $45,000, boosting the scholarship contribution grand total to $135,000.

The Foundation’s Agent Giving Circle program matches one-for-one Agent donations to eligible nonprofit organizations in support of programs such as the CONFEMEX scholarship program in support of students living in underserved communities.

"Education is one of Western Union's Our World, Our Family® key funding priorities," said Western Union Foundation President, Luella Chavez-D'Angelo. "Western Union recognizes the core value of learning, and that education is one of the most important tools to improve the quality of life of individuals and communities."

The Western Union Foundation and Irv Barr Management grant to CONFEMEX will help provide college students with $1,000 scholarships.

CONFEMEX hometown federations include: Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Michoacán, Oaxaca and Zacatecas.

"“It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Isabel Rodriguez, 94, who died early Tuesday morning May 20 of natural causes at Alhambra Community Hospital,” said Jaime Rodriguez, an aid to state Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello.

Isabel Rodriguez was born July 8, 1913 in Basis, a silver mining town in the Mexican state of Durango. She crossed the border of El Paso, Texas and came to Los Angeles residing in Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. For a time, according to Jaime, she worked in the laundry department of the Los Angeles County General Hospital. A single parent, she was a strong willed and caring mother who along with her sons and daughter became an active and passionate supporter of the Latino Civil Rights Movement of the late sixties and early seventies.

"n a move that breaks the mold of traditional regional Mexican concert promotion, two marquee groups, Intocable and Los Horoscopos de Durango, are joining forces for a 40-stop tour of the United States.

The Unidos tour is slated to kick off June 13 at the Convention Center in Visalia, California, to coincide with the release of albums by Horoscopos and Intocable. As is the case with the traditional regional Mexican "dance" circuit, the show will visit fairgrounds, theaters and convention centers.

But the tour -- overseen by management/promotion company Nueva Generacion Music Group -- marks a departure for the circuit because it features co-headliners and is being marketed as a major pop event, with a Web site, MySpace page and YouTube promotion. It's also being promoted as a brand -- Unidos -- that is slated to return annually."

I get many e-mails and read many comments from anti-immigrant folk who want to deport all illegal immigrants. That is fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I want to know who would foot the bill.

Last September in testimony before a Senate committee, ICE stated that "It would cost at least $94 billion to find, detain and remove all 12 million people believed to be staying illegally in the United States."

While that is a rough calculation, it can't be denied that it is a large number. It does not take into consideration the economic (or social) ripple effect of removing that many people who may/or may not work, contribute to social security, pay taxes, shop, have kids in school, etc. Nor does it take into consideration how much money communities, health services etc might save. This is just a big number with huge implications.

So who is going to pay? Isn't our country in enough debt and fiscal trouble that we can't rub our brains together to come up with a smarter solution.

"Universal Music Group (UMG), the world's leading music company, today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Univision Music Group following the recent clearance of the deal in the U.S. by the Federal Trade Commission. The acquisition results in UMG becoming the largest Latin music company in North America.

The combined company, which will operate under the Universal Music Latin Entertainment banner, will include Universal Music Latino, Machete, the newly acquired labels from the Univision purchase -- Fonovisa and Disa, Universal Music Mexico & Central America, Latin publishing in the US and Mexico, including the newly acquired Edimonsa, Disa and the Fonovisa catalogs, and GTS Global Talent Services, a management service division. As part of this acquisition, the Univision name will be phased out. Universal Music Latin Entertainment will be a division of Universal Music Latin America, and will be led by Jesus Lopez (currently Chairman & CEO of Latin America and Iberian Peninsula). Mr. Lopez will continue to be based in Miami, Florida and report to Zach Horowitz (President & COO, Universal Music Group) for Universal Music Latin Entertainment."
