The Cleveland Museum of Art’s (CMA) VIVA! & Gala series opens the 2009-10 season with the Cleveland debut of Puerto Plata: Music of the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Murch Auditorium.

Puerto Plata’s sweet, nostaligic voice is laced with the kind of wisdom that’s reminiscent of the late Ibrahim Ferrer of Buena Vista Social Club. Combining meringue, guaracha, son and música jíbara, Puerto Plata takes the audience back to the Golden Age of Dominican guitar music before the saxophone and accordion became dominant. An heir to an unbroken native son tradition, Plata offers a taste of the living music of the great soneros. Son originated in eastern Cuba when African rhythm and drumming was introduced to Havana to produce the mambo, salsa, timba and more. The Dominican Republic version of son, intertwines bolero, guaracha and early meringue.

At age 85, the Dominican master, Jose Cobles is as charismatic and vigorous as ever. Born in the resort town of Puerto Plata in 1923, and later given that as a nickname, Plata plays the guitar and sings Dominican sones, boleros and merengues in a voice that has seen its share of romance and trouble.

--more--

Pg 2 – Puerto Plata

The musicians for Puerto Plata include Jose Cobles (Puerto Plata), vocals; Frank Mendez, lead guitar; Augusto Santos, rhythm guitar; Samuel Paredes, bass; Randy Alejo, percussion; and Roberto Santos, percussion.

Admission to the performance is $34; $33 for CMA members. Special group and student rates are available. To purchase tickets visit the CMA Online Box Office at www.clevelandart.org/tickets or call 1-888-CMA-0033. Puerto Plata performs at Murch Auditorium in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) located at 1 Wade Oval Drive in Cleveland. Limited parking is available at the CMNH lot. Additional parking is available at the Cleveland Museum of Art parking garage on University Circle. The 2009-10 VIVA! & Gala season sponsors include full season sponsor WCPN 90.3 and performance sponsor WCLV 104.9.

VIVA! & Gala 2009-10 Season

The next performance in the VIVA! & Gala series will be the Shaolin Warriors of China on Wednesday, November 4 in the Ohio Theatre at the PlayhouseSquare, at 7:30 p.m. In a fully choreographed theatrical production, the world-renowned Shaolin Warriors bring the remarkable skill, stunning movement, and spectacular imagery of martial arts to stages throughout the world. These Kung Fu masters have trained from an early age in mental and physical disciplines that allow them to perform feats once thought only possible in the movies. Admission is $39, CMA Members $38.

VIVA! & Gala Around Town debuted as the museum’s renovations began in 2005. This series took spectacular performances from many different countries, award-winning recording artists, and acclaimed dance companies to some of Cleveland’s most impressive venues. The current 2009-2010 series splits its season between Around Town performances in the fall and a return home to the museum’s Gartner Auditorium in February.

The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The programs are also made possible by The Ernest L. and Louise M. Gartner Fund, The P. J. McMyler Musical Endowment Fund, The Anton and Rose Zverina Music Fund, The Musart Society, and the John P. Murphy Foundation.

"DIRECTV Más™, DIRECTV’s Spanish-language programming service, is launching Proyecto Esperanza (Project Hope), an advertising and PSA campaign aimed at Hispanics in the United States that calls out the plight of orphans in the Caribbean and Latin America. The television campaign will feature Latin superstar Charytin and give people around the country an opportunity to sign up for DIRECTV Más through a dedicated telephone number and support The Orphaned Starfish Foundation.

Since its inception, DIRECTV Más has set a goal of being a part of the fabric of all U.S. Hispanic households by transporting its viewers to their homelands through the most extensive programming lineup from Latin America and the Caribbean.

To further this goal, DIRECTV Más is supporting The Orphaned Starfish Foundation and its dedication to working with orphans and disadvantaged children throughout the Caribbean and Latin America – a region that U.S. Hispanics care deeply about, because for most, it is a place they once called home.

“The work of The Orphaned Starfish Foundation is truly remarkable,” said John De Armas, vice president, WorldDirect. “Its goal to foster lasting change in the lives of these children, in a region that both our customers and our programmers care very much about, motivated us to create a mechanism by which Hispanics here in the United States could help support this very honorable cause. Just look around you. These kids in the Dominican Republic and throughout Latin America deserve an opportunity to succeed.”

Latin Superstar Charytin will serve as the spokesperson on behalf of DIRECTV Más for the Proyecto Esperanza campaign. Charytin will star in a series of commercials and public service announcements calling attention to the plight of these children and letting people know how they can help.

“I am honored to be the ambassador/spokesperson for Proyecto Esperanza. I have children of my own and know first-hand the importance of a good education,” said Charytin. “Being able to see first hand the work The Orphaned Starfish Foundation is doing, gives me great hope for the future of these children and thousands of others throughout Latin America.”

The Orphaned Starfish Foundation was founded on the belief that education is a supremely important method of saving orphans from the cycle of poverty. Since its inception, The Orphaned Starfish Foundation has funded the construction and operation of vocational training facilities in several orphanages and homes for disadvantaged children in Latin America, including funding for furnishings, required equipment, trainer salaries, and job placement service. The Orphaned Starfish Foundation is a completely volunteer-run organization and currently supports 17 projects in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama.

“We are grateful and thrilled for the opportunity of working together with DIRECTV Más,” said Andrew Stein, chairman and president of The Orphaned Starfish Foundation. “This will allow us to continue to expand our ability to touch the lives of so many young people who desperately need our help and support. Our mission to educate and provide lifelong skills to help them end the cycle of poverty, will now be significantly enhanced.”
About The Orphaned Starfish Foundation

The Orphaned Starfish Foundation was founded on the belief that education is supremely important and the most likely path out of the poverty trap. When children are educated, they tend to grow up to be more productive. When people are more productive, they tend to earn more income. And when people earn more income, they have a better chance to escape or avoid poverty. Since its inception, the foundation has funded the construction and operation of vocational training facilities in several orphanages and homes for disadvantaged children in Latin America, including funding for furnishings, required equipment, trainer salaries, and job placement service. The foundation is a completely volunteer run organization and currently supports seventeen projects in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama.

"For the first time ever, the exceptionally smooth Brugal Extra Viejo Rum is now available in the US. The launch rounds out a world-class collection of rums from the Brugal family, just in time for Father’s Day and gift-giving for the discerning dad.

Created in the Dominican Republic by Don Andres Brugal in 1888, Brugal is the largest-selling rum brand in the Dominican Republic and among the top five rum brands in the world.

“For years, Brugal enthusiasts have asked us to make Extra Viejo available within the US,” said Gustavo Ortega, Brugal’s Maestro Ronero, or Rum Master, and 5th generation descendant of Don Andres Brugal. “We are pleased to meet our consumer demands.”

In his book “Kindred Spirits,” leading US Spirits authority Paul Pacult referred to Brugal Extra Viejo as “stunning...all the sensory delights promised in the color and nose are fulfilled in a balanced stately manner.”

Extra Viejo, meaning extra old, is a sophisticated and elegant rum. A blend of older reserves, it commands attention with its mesmerizing, dark crystallized amber appearance and mouth-watering bouquet of raisins, toasted oak and pipe tobacco notes. Its textured, seemingly weightless body delivers long-lasting flavors that include French roast coffee, warm toffee, hot cocoa and hints of nutmeg and anise. Ideally, Brugal Extra Viejo Rum should be sipped straight or on the rocks.

Well-known for its characteristic smoothness, the super-premium Brugal Extra Viejo has been widely sought by American consumers, who previously could only buy this prized rum in the Dominican Republic. Brugal Extra Viejo is available in select restaurants, bars and retail outlets nationwide, beginning this month. The suggested retail price for the 750 ml size is $24.99.

In addition to Extra Viejo, the array of Brugal rums includes Brugal Añejo, Brugal Gold and Brugal White, all distilled and aged to this day under the care and supervision of the Brugal Family.
