On August 2010, 72 migrant workers were kidnapped and murdered at a ranch in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. This bloodbath exposed the reality faced by thousands of migrants every year. Via reenactments and with exclusive access to the scene of the crime and the testimony of one of the survivors, La Ruta de la Muerte retraces the events that led to this massacre.


Discovery en Espanol's cameras follow in the steps of a group of migrants, among them Marco, a Guatemalan on his third attempt to reach the United States, who was an eye witness to one of these mass kidnappings; and Ismael a young man from Honduras whose sister was forcefully taken right in front of him.

The special also highlights the work the Mexican Navy is undertaking in this area, as well showcases the analysis and opinions of key figures such as Father Alejandro Solalinde, who heads the Arriaga shelter in the state of Oaxaca; Salvador Beltran, Commissioner of the National Institute on Migration; Fernando Batista, Representative of the Commission on Human Rights; and Felipe Gonzalez a representative for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

La Ruta de la Muerte is an original production by Discovery en Espanol under the direction of Michela Giorelli and Irune Ariztoy, with the assistance of Pacha Films, under the direction of Guillermo Galdos and Luis del Valle.

"This documentary explores the extraordinary scientific and technological innovations employed in this miraculous rescue from the depths of the earth," explains Luis Silberwasser, Senior Vice President and International Head of Content for Discovery Networks International. "In true Discovery fashion, we will provide an exclusive inside look into the myriad of characters, arduous planning as well as the victories and setbacks the 70-day rescue mission meant for all those involved."

The special will offer Discovery en Espanol's viewers exclusive access to:

- The room set aside for reunions between rescued miners and their families
- Andre Sougarett, head of the rescue operation
- The workings of the three drilling machines used in the rescue operation
- The engineers and technicians in charge of each of the three rescue plans (Plans A, B and C) and the drilling machines
- The "control room" where daily planning meetings took place
- Medical teams, including Dr. Jean Romagnoli, one of the health experts who kept the miners alive
- Interviews with one of the heroic rescuers who descended into the mine during the final phase of the operation to show the miners how to use the escape capsule

The program will also feature interviews with the miners' families and loved ones, Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne, Dr. Michael Duncan of NASA (who advised the medical team in charge of the miners during their captivity) and several of the engineers and drillers on site.

Also, as part of a slate of October exclusives for U.S. Hispanic audiences, Discovery en Espanol premieres "Ingrid Betancourt: seis anos en la jungla". This impactful documentary, airing on Sunday, October 31st at 9 PM E/P, presents the first ever personal accounts by the controversial former presidential candidate about her capture, including rarely seen file footage.

Through the testimonials of Ingrid Betancourt, Clara Rojas, Luis Eladio Perez, Marc Gonsalves and guerrilla commander Martin Shadow, the documentary lays evidence to the painful experiences of thousands of kidnapping victims in Colombia. At the same time the special allows viewers to gain insight into the daily challenges of life in the jungle, the mindset of the kidnappers, and the difficult decisions that those in captivity are sometimes forced to make.

Rescate imposible: 70 dias bajo tierra is executive produced by Michela Giorelli for Discovery en Espanol and by Brooke Runnette for Discovery Channel US, with the assistance of Pacha Films.

Ingrid Betancourt: seis anos en la jungla was directed by Angus Macqueen, of Ronachan Films, who also served as the film's producer along with Christopher Jorg, of Pumpernickel Films. The interviews for this documentary were conducted between the months of March and June of the 2010.

Airing on Thursday, September 16th at 9 PM ET/PT, this original production, directed by award winning Mexican filmmaker Carlos Bolado, examines the events between September of 1810 and July of 1811 that gave rise to liberty.

The special reconstructs a fundamental moment in history by combining testimony from renowned historians with scenes that recreate pivotal events such as "El Grito de Dolores", the bloody siege of the "Alhondiga de Granaditas" in Guanajuato, and the epic battle of the "Monte de las Cruces". Shot on location in Queretaro, Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, and the Federal District, El grito que sacudio a Mexico, focuses on these events two main protagonists: Miguel Hidalgo a priest and Ignacio Allende a military leader.

The ultimate weather and geology spectacular, built round a backbone of fascinating science. The power and the beauty of the most magnificent natural phenomena are central to this series. Viewers are transported to the ends of the earth to witness stunning images of eruptions, storms, floods and fires. Each episode emphasizes specific events and showcases how these gargantuan forces have contributed to the creation of the natural world as we know it.

Into the Pride - starting on 08/11, Wednesdays at 8 PM ET/ 9 PM PT
With the possibility of quick death pervading his every move, the program features charismatic big cat expert Dave Salmoni as he spends a year in Africas Kalahari Desert with a pride of lions. Armed with only a walking stick, Salmoni will hunt, sleep and talk with the lions sharing in the births, deaths and day-to-day emotions of the pride. The risks and challenges to Salmoni are immediate. He needs to get close to these felines to win their trust, in spite of the mortal risk that it entails.

River Monsters - starting on 08/12, Thursdays at 8 PM ET/ 9 PM PT
What "Jaws" did for a swim in the ocean, River Monsters could do for a dip in river. If you want to see the strangest, largest most dangerous and elusive beasts of the deep, then you have to go to the worlds murkiest rivers and lakes. Ecologist, adventurer, anthropologist and angler extraordinaire Jeremy Wade will be doing just that as he immerses himself not just in the waters to search for fresh-water behemoths, but in the local cultures and traditions surrounding these monsters, some of them flesh eaters.

Night - starting on 08/13, Fridays at 8 PM ET/ 9 PM PT
Since the dawn of time man has feared...when the lights go out. Tapping into our most primal fears, this unique series will take viewers into the darkest night to experience the wonder and terror of nocturnal nature and all its animal activities.

The 10-part natural history series airs on Discovery en Espanol starting July 26th at 8 PM ET/ 9 PM PT.

More than four years in the making, with over 3,000 days of filming in the field, the series spans every continent and every habitat. Each episode focuses on a different animal or plant group, engrossing viewers with never-before-seen behaviors and extraordinary scenes.


"VIDA offers a fascinating take on the behaviors developed by the different species that share the planet with us. VIDA is a project of astounding proportions that hits new production highs. It is intimate in its storytelling, yet bigger than life. The series introduces some of the most compelling natural history images ever seen -- many captured for the first time ever on film. These include the first filming of a male humpback whale mating battle (called the "heat run") from beginning to end; Komodo dragons bringing down an animal 10 times their size in a real-life drama that lasted more than two weeks; a pebble toad rolling down a mountain, bouncing like a rubber ball, to escape a tarantula; the bizarre mating ritual of the elusive Vogelkop bowerbird, found in the deep forests of New Guinea; and an astonishing night scene showing massive numbers of Humboldt squid hunting cooperatively for sardines.
