Today, Colgate-Palmolive Company joined the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) to celebrate the launch of Colgate's Oral Health Month. From now until June 30, this annual campaign will help fight the poor oral health epidemic by educating U.S. families about the importance of proper oral care.

In partnership with the HDA, this campaign will strongly target the Hispanic community through bilingual oral health education materials and activities. The Hispanic population has become the largest minority group in the United States, resulting in an increase in oral health care demands. In fact, minority populations bear a disproportionate burden of oral disease in the United States according to a recent report by the U.S. Surgeon General.

"Due to language barriers, lack of familiarity and low dental insurance coverage levels, our Latino population continues to experience difficulty in accessing oral healthcare services and education," says Carla Kelly, General Manager, U.S. Multicultural Marketing, Colgate-Palmolive. "With an ongoing need for improved oral health among Hispanic Americans, we tailored our Oral Health Month campaign to address the needs of this ever-growing community."

During Oral Health Month, Colgate's flagship program "Bright Smiles, Bright Futures" will travel throughout the U.S. to provide free oral health education and dental screenings to children via mobile dental vans. On a larger level, families across the country will be encouraged to participate in Oral Health Month by going online with their loved ones to take the "Colgate Family Promise."

"Colgate is committed to helping improve the oral health and well-being of consumers worldwide. Our "Bright Smiles, Bright Futures" program reaches millions of underserved children in the U.S. and our Oral Health Month campaign continues to successfully provide families with oral health education," said Noel Wallace, President, Colgate North America and Global Sustainability. "As the world leader in oral care, Colgate urges all U.S. families to pursue better oral health together - starting now with the "Colgate Family Promise."

The "Colgate Family Promise" empowers families across the U.S. to make a commitment to live healthier lives together. By visiting http://www.Colgate.com/OHM, families can make the "Colgate Family Promise" by promising online to practice proper oral care habits together. For every promise submitted online, Colgate-Palmolive will donate one Colgate(R) toothbrush and one tube of Colgate(R) toothpaste to a family in need.

"The Hispanic Dental Association is excited to join Colgate-Palmolive in launching this year's Oral Health Month, an annual campaign that supports our organization's mission to improve oral care among Hispanics," said Victor Rodriguez, DDS (http://www.hdassoc.org/site/epage/28202_351.htm), President, Hispanic Dental Association. "We are inspired by the passion and enthusiasm of this campaign and look forward to changing families across the U.S. one smile at a time, one "promise" at a time."

"June is National Smile Month, and the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA), Oral Health America, and participating sponsors, dental offices, community care providers, schools, and camps are encouraging children and adults not to forget their toothbrushes on summer vacation. National Smile Month promotes the importance of:

-- Brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste

-- Visiting a dental care provider as often as they recommend

-- Choosing healthy foods for a tooth-friendly and nutritious diet

"We welcome everyone's involvement in this effort to ensure that families and caregivers understand the importance of caring for our mouth as a part of every family's daily routine," said Beth Truett, President and CEO, Oral Health America.

Participation in National Smile Month can include sharing the campaign messages with family and friends, or challenging your children to a two-minute "brushing contest" to see who comes the closest in brushing their teeth for two minutes without a timer! Enter the Healthy Smile Contest, and share your photos and stories at www.oralhealthamerica.org.

"Oral health should be a critical and integral component of overall total health," said Francisco Ramos-Gomez, DDS, MS, MPH, President of the Hispanic Dental Association. "With a special focus for the young, pregnant, elderly, and people with special needs, this means taking the time to help them maintain a healthy mouth in a healthy body."

National Smile Month will be launched at the Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore, MD, on June 5th. The National Museum of Dentistry offers a fun and educational online tool in Spanish to teach kids about brushing and flossing, avoiding tobacco, and eating healthy, at www.MouthPower.org.

The Hispanic Dental Association, formed in 1990, is the only national organization of dental professionals dedicated to promoting and improving the oral health of the Hispanic community and providing advocacy for Hispanic oral health professionals across the United States. Find out more at www.hdassoc.org.

Oral Health America is the nation's leading, independent organization dedicated to eliminating oral disease. National Smile Month is sponsored by Patterson Dental, Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, UnitedHealthcare Dental, and other dental industry leaders. A simultaneous campaign runs in the United Kingdom through the International Dental Health Foundation. Visit www.oralhealthamerica.org for more information. "

"Results from a 2008 Gallup-Healthways poll(1) show that 42 percent of Hispanics have not visited the dentist in the past 12 months, even though the American Dental Association recommends having regular dental check-ups and cleanings. In contrast, 29 percent of all Americans responded that they did not see a dentist in the prior year.

As reported by USA Today, according to Gallup, over half of those making less than $2,000 a month reported omitting visits as well. These results may indicate that the tight economy is forcing many Americans to cut back on dental care.

Dr. Cesar Sabates, who is an active member of the Hispanic dental community in Florida, is collaborating with Crest(R) Pro-Health(TM) to raise awareness in the Hispanic community of the importance of taking care of their oral health, even in times of financial strain, and making sure that they are paying attention to and caring for these key areas that dentists check the most: cavities, gingivitis, plaque, stain, sensitivity and breath.

"Skipping regular dental care is risky and can lead to serious and costly tooth and gum problems in the long run. Having a daily dental care routine that includes a toothpaste that helps prevent conditions like cavities and gum disease among others, such as Crest Pro-Health, is an optimal and preventative way to maintain a healthy mouth all year round, especially when regular visits to the dentist are not possible," said Sabates.

According to Crest, some studies have indicated that there may be a link between gum disease and a number of health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes.

The American Dental Association recommends the following tips for daily oral care:

* Brush your teeth twice a day, with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth, allowing you to reach all areas easily.
* When choosing any dental product, like your toothpaste, look for the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, an important symbol of a dental product's safety and effectiveness.
* Cleaning between the teeth once a day with floss or interdental cleaners removes plaque from between the teeth, areas where the toothbrush can't reach. This process is essential in preventing periodontal (gum) disease.

Crest Pro-Health is the first and only toothpaste with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance to help protect these areas dentists check most: cavities, gingivitis, plaque, stain, sensitivity and breath. Crest Pro-Health uses a Polyfluorite System(TM), consisting of therapeutic antibacterial fluoride and ActivClean Crystals TM for cleaning.

"It is unfortunate to see that, due to the current financial situation, many Hispanics have had to forgo their visits to the dentist, but they should know that investing pennies a day on the proper toothpaste can lower the risk of potential oral health problems in the future. We hope to encourage members of the Hispanic community to maintain good dental care habits at home so they can have a healthy, beautiful smile," said Anelsie Ramos, External Relations Manager for P&G.

About P&G

Three billion times a day, P&G brands touch the lives of people around the world. The company has one of the strongest portfolios of trusted, quality, leadership brands, including Pampers(R), Tide(R), Ariel(R), Always(R), Whisper(R), Pantene(R), Mach3(R), Bounty(R), Dawn(R), Pringles(R), , Charmin(R), Downy(R), Lenor(R), Iams(R), Crest(R), Oral-B(R), Actonel(R), Duracell(R), Olay(R), Head & Shoulders(R), Wella, Gillette(R), and Braun. The P&G community consists of almost 140,000 employees working in over 80 countries worldwide.

"Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is enhancing service to its Spanish-speaking members.

Effective July 11, Humana launched its Interactive Voice Response Systems (IVRs) with complete Spanish functionality. IVR is an automated telephone technology that allows a computer to interact with members through pre-recorded voice responses, to gather and provide information and to route calls to further resources such as a live customer service representative.

“Spanish-speaking members will now be able to more efficiently perform such tasks as request new identification cards, get a proof of insurance fax or make a health savings account (HSA) withdrawal,” said John Brown, service vice president for Humana. “With this added functionality, Spanish-speaking members will have the same level of self-service and call routing offered to English-speaking callers.”

Humana has a number of IVR systems designed to meet the needs of members and customers. An IVR for Humana’s commercial members was recently designed for Perfect Service, an essential consumer-centric initiative through which Humana challenges its associates and service functions to not only meet customers' needs, but to anticipate and exceed their expectations. This system provides enhanced self-service that allow our members to get information about their benefits and claims or request new identification cards without waiting to talk to a customer care associate.

Humana offers additional self-service opportunities through special IVR systems supporting the company’s Medicare products, RightSource prescription drug mail order, Nurse Advice and member spending accounts such as health savings accounts, personal care accounts and flexible spending accounts.

All of these systems will be completely Spanish-enabled when the new system goes into operation in July. An IVR for Humana’s dental members will be enhanced with Spanish later in 2008.

The Spanish-language interactive voice response systems were enhanced to facilitate communication with the growing segment of Spanish-speaking members enrolled in Humana health plans. A large number of membership within Humana is located in states where, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanics are the largest minority population. These states include Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

The estimated Hispanic population of the United States as of July 2006 is 44.3 million making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic or race minority. There are 32.2 million U.S. household residents age five or older who speak Spanish at home. Hispanics now comprise 15 percent of the nation’s population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and are expected to comprise 20 percent of the population within the next 20 years. "

"Members of the United Steelworkers (USW), labor and community activists demonstrated in front of Occidental Petroleum headquarters today in support of a people's tribunal in Bogota, Colombia that is hearing evidence of murders and death threats against union activists involving the company's alleged approval.

"Corporations that operate in areas of conflict should not contribute wittingly or unwittingly to human rights abuses," said USW District 12 Director Terry Bonds. "Occidental Petroleum should ensure human rights violations are not being committed by state agents or their proxies operating to defend the company's interests."

Bonds represents USW members in California, including about 80 workers employed at Occidental Petroleum in Long Beach.

Demonstrators chanted slogans like "Enough Violence, Basta Con La Violencia," and held picket signs. They collected signatures for a petition to Congress and delivered a letter to Dr. Ray R. Irani, chairman, president and CEO of Occidental Petroleum.

In the letter, the United Steelworkers Union (USW) expressed concern over Occidental's complicity in human rights abuses in Colombia. The union urged the company to "come clean" about the full extent of its involvement in the Dec. 13, 1998 bombing of Santo Domingo and expressed concern about its reported financial and logistical support for the Colombian 18th Army Brigade, which has committed numerous human rights abuses including the August 2004 murder of three union leaders. There is evidence the Brigade, which helps protect the company's Cano Limon oil pipeline, continues to aid and abet the paramilitary groups.

The Permanent Peoples' Tribunal, Tribunal Permanente de los Pueblos (TPP), being held today and tomorrow in Bogota is exposing transnational corporations like Occidental Petroleum, British Petroleum, Coca-Cola, Nestle, and Chiquita Brands International for their alleged participation with the Colombian security forces and rightwing paramilitary groups in silencing and sometimes killing trade unionists and community activists. The tribunal is composed of 130 members and includes experts in international law, human rights and international humanitarian law.

The lack of prosecution and conviction of those responsible for these killings of human rights activists, trade unionists, journalists, teachers, health workers, indigenous people, peasant farmers and elected officials has led Democratic congressional leaders to hold up the vote on the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement until the Colombian government proves it is actively going after the perpetrators and brings them to justice.

Labor leaders continue to be murdered with impunity. Since 1991, over 2,300 trade unionists have been murdered. Under President Uribe's tenure, convictions have been reported in 59 trade union homicide cases, an average of less than one per month, for the past five years. Of the 59 convictions, only 22 of them are for the over 450 murders committed since Uribe took office in August 2002.

Ever since it discovered the Cano Limon oil field in 1983, Occidental's presence in the Arauca region of Colombia has attracted the participants of the civil war: leftwing guerrillas, the military and the paramilitaries. According to Amnesty International, many of the human rights abuses done by these groups has occurred in communities and areas that border the company's Cano Limon oil pipeline. Occidental has admitted its personnel have paid the guerrillas in exchange for being left alone.

According to the LA Times, a security firm hired by Occidental to monitor guerrilla movements (another U.S. company known as AirScan) provided coordinates to Colombian military pilots when they dropped cluster bombs on Santo Domingo, a village near one of the company's pipelines. Seventeen civilians, including seven children, died in the attack.

In the past, Occidental supported the Colombian military in its attempt to forcibly remove the U'Wa Indian tribe from its ancestral land to make way for the company's pipelines.

The company successfully lobbied the U.S. for expanded military operations in Arauca and was a big supporter of Plan Colombia, a multi-billion dollar effort to fund the country's military so it could ostensibly fight drug trafficking.

One of the other companies being charged is Drummond, which the USW sued for its alleged role in the murder of three union leaders in 2001. The leaders' union has gone on strike in Colombia against Drummond, thereby increasing their vulnerability to violent reprisals. The USW stands in solidarity with those striking workers.

Besides the Los Angeles demonstration, events are being held today at the corporate headquarters of Coca-Cola in Atlanta and Chiquita Brands in Cincinnati. There are also community-based efforts in New York and Boston.

As the largest industrial union in North America, the USW represents 850,000 active workers employed in the oil, chemical, paper, metals, rubber and service sectors.
