The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation's premier Latino youth leadership development and educational services organization, today announced the creation of the Cisneros Family Endowment. This endowment is made possible by a generous pledge of $700,000 from The Gilbert and Jacki Cisneros Foundation. The endowment will provide support for two Latino students from California to participate in CHCI's Congressional Internship Program every year. The Cisneros' gift is the largest contribution from an individual donor in CHCI's history.

"CHCI is honored to receive this generous gift from the Cisneros Foundation to benefit the future leaders of our country," said Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez, CHCI Chair. "Their willingness to give back demonstrates the commitment we need from the Latino community to ensure we have the resources available to meet the demand for educational and career-building opportunities for the fastest-growing segment of our population."

The Cisneros' founded The Gilbert and Jacki Cisneros Foundation in 2010, after winning $266 million in California's Mega Millions jackpot. To date, the foundation has created two $1 million endowments at Jacki's alma mater USC, for Latino journalism students, and Gilbert's alma mater, The George Washington University, for Latino political science students. They have partnered with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to create the Frank Terrazas Scholarship program at El Rancho High School in their former hometown of Pico Rivera, CA. Named in honor of Jacki's grandfather and former mayor of Pico Rivera, this program will provide 50 college scholarships to current and former El Rancho High School students. They have also provided over $275,000 in funding to other organizations supporting Hispanic education.

"Rather than just provide tuition assistance, it was important for us to provide our scholarship recipients with an opportunity where they could gain experience by working in a congressional office and also be part of a program that will build a foundation for their future careers," said Gilbert and Jacki Cisneros. "CHCI has had tremendous success in building leaders and we look forward to working with them and becoming part of their family."

CHCI's Congressional Internship Program began in 1986 and has served more than 775 Latino undergraduate students in the past 25 years. The Cisneros Family Endowment Fund is designed to cover the costs of two Congressional Interns during CHCI's summer session in perpetuity.

Second $1 Million Gift to CHCI Continues Year-Round Internships for Latino Undergraduates

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation's premier Latino youth leadership development and educational organization, today announced a new $1 million grant from Walmart to continue the fall and spring semesters of its award-winning Congressional Internship Program (CIP) through 2015. Walmart's $1 million donation in 2009 allowed CHCI to expand its traditional summer program to conduct three internship sessions each year, effectively doubling the reach of the internship program. Since the program's expansion, 55 CHCI Walmart Congressional interns have benefited from this life-changing experience.

"CHCI is thrilled to continue its strong relationship with Walmart to benefit the ever-expanding Latino youth population and ensure more opportunities are provided for Latino undergraduates to access careers in public service and public policy," said Charles A. Gonzalez, CHCI Chair. "Over the past three years, this partnership has allowed CHCI to dramatically increase the talent pipeline and address Hispanic under-representation on Capitol Hill by doubling our capacity to offer these once-in-a-lifetime paid internships. With its renewal of this generous gift, Walmart continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to diversity and equality in the workforce."

"More than a decade ago, I had the honor of serving as an intern in Washington, D.C. The experience I gained broadened my view of the world and helped me develop a deep appreciation for the role public policy can play in peoples' lives," said Belinda Garza, Walmart Director of Federal Government Relations. "Walmart is proud to support these future leaders as they make their mark in Congress and help their communities live better."

CHCI's CIP places college undergraduates in Congressional offices where they are responsible for conducting extensive legislative research, monitoring day-to-day hearings, managing constituent communications, and assisting with general office matters. Additionally, interns participate in weekly CHCI leadership and professional development sessions and meet with corporate representatives, national elected officials, and foreign dignitaries. Interns are provided with housing, roundtrip transportation to and from Washington, D.C., and a stipend.

"My participation in the first-ever CHCI Walmart Internship class in Spring 2010 transformed my life. I am honored to have the opportunity to work in Congress and contribute to the legislative process on behalf of my community," said Victor Baten, staff assistant, Office of Rep. Judy Chu (CA-32). "The CHCI internship gave me direct access to a powerful network and guided me on a career path that will allow me to grow into a future leader and impact public policy for many years to come."
