“Hall County deputies will soon begin deportation proceedings for any person booked into the county jail who is determined to be in the country illegally.

Sheriff Steve Cronic said nine of his deputies began training today for the 287(g) program, a local-federal partnership that gives sheriff’s officials new authority in enforcing immigration law.

Cronic had been waiting for approval for the program for nearly a year. Hall County and Whitfield County will be the second and third jurisdictions in Georgia to implement the program, which Cobb County began last year.”*

“Mexico’s former president, Vicente Fox, said there are two types of local governments when it comes to immigration: Those that are “humane” and understand the benefits of immigrant workers, and those that are “really going too far, and violating human rights in certain situations.”

That was his response after a question about Cobb County’s new program to deport illegal immigrants from its jail.”*

Cobb County jail site of confusion, despair over deportation - Georgia

“Cobb’s Hispanic population is learning the hard reality of heightened immigration enforcement at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

The new deportation program means more families wait at the jail to learn if a loved one will be released.

It means families don’t know whether to pay bond on local charges if there is the chance a relative will be held anyway until the federal government deports him. Visits at the jail have been limited to one per week because of the volume of inmates, for an array of reasons.

On top of that, immigrant advocates say some inmates are held longer than permissible while the sheriff’s staff decides whether to press immigration charges. They say Cobb County is targeting Latino immigrants in traffic stops.”*

Hiring off the curb? Not in Marietta - Georgia (you can get busted for picking up a day laborer)

“From Marietta to Lawrenceville, many metro Atlanta officials have, in fits and starts, tried to rein in day laborers in response to howls from homeowners and businesses. Most recently, Cobb County last month backed off plans to outlaw picking up day laborers or seeking temporary employment on county streets, sidewalks and parking lots.

But for eight years, Marietta has been quietly enforcing the same law, targeting the people who hire day laborers. City police have handed out tickets to builders, landscapers and even homeowners seeking help with lawn work. Their reasons for hiring the day laborers vary, but their actions continue to fuel debate on the issue of illegal immigration. That’s because, correctly or not, many presume the majority of day laborers are illegal immigrants.

Chalfant is among about 80 people whom Marietta police have ticketed in the past four years, records show. Some of those who received citations said they were unaware of the law”

Members of the Cobb Hispanic/Latino Initiative said they learned only from news reports that the county commissioners planned to vote on the deportation plan. The committee was created in 2004 by Sam Olens, chairman of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, and Georgia Power Region Manager David Connell, who was then incoming chairman of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce.”

Eyes on illegal immigrants - Cobb County, Georgia

“It is testimony to the utter impotence of Congress and the federal immigration bureaucracy that it falls on the Cobb County Sheriff’s Department to ensure that people in the country illegally who are convicted of crimes are deported.

While Congress wasted time over the last year debating how long and how fancy a new fence on the border with Mexico should be ”” and how many National Guard units would be needed to help the Border Patrol get control of it ”” it paid little attention, and appropriated too few dollars, to track down those illegal immigrants already here who are committing mayhem in communities and overcrowding local jails.”

The county would be the first in Georgia to join the program. Only seven other agencies around the country have joined.”

Latinos feel harassed in crackdown on gangs in Georgia

Filed under [ Hispanic News ]

“When federal agents announced the arrests late last week of 375 foreign-born gang members nationwide ”” including 15 in metro Atlanta ”” no one was paying closer attention than Cobb County school officials.

The influx of Hispanics in Cobb schools and the national emergence of such gangs as Latin Kings, Mara Salvatrucha and Sureños has created a quandary: School and police officials feel the need to crack down on suspected gang activity to make schools safe. But Latino parents feel that school officials are discriminating against their kids and branding them as gang members without evidence.”
