Introducing The First Bi-Cultural Community Bank In The San Diego Area Vibra Bank Successfully Completes IPO - Announces July 23rd Grand Opening

Filed under [ Press Releases ] [ Blogante Business ] [ Blogante Business Essentials ] [ California ]
Tags: , , , , ,

“Today, Vibra Bank announces the successful close of its Initial Public Offering and the Grand Opening of its headquarters in Chula Vista.

Just six months after announcing its IPO, and nearly 200 investors later, Vibra Bank has raised $14.8 million in capital. Well in excess of the minimum required to open, this capital reflects the strong support that exists for Vibra Bank’s concept of a bi-cultural community bank with a focus on serving businesses in Chula Vista, the South Bay and the entire San Diego region.

Vibra Bank will hold its Grand Opening on July 23, 2008, at its headquarters located at 530 Broadway in Chula Vista. Mayor Cheryl Cox and representatives from the Latino and South Bay business community will be on hand for a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by food and festivities.

“This is an exciting day for Chula Vista,” said Mayor Cox. “Vibra Bank is a unique bi-cultural community bank that will be a great asset to the residents and businesses of Chula Vista. We’re thrilled to welcome them to the neighborhood.”

Howard B. Levenson, Vibra Bank Investor and Board Member agreed, noting the San Diego community has gone without a bi-cultural bank for over 20 years. “This has been a long time

coming - and the fact that they’ve been able to accomplish this under the current market conditions is a testament to the strength of this venture.”

“Vibra Bank is different from other banks because we’re able to offer our customers a personalized banking experience to meet their specific needs.” said Vibra Bank President and CEO Scott Parker. “We’re committed to providing our customers with first class service that changes the way they view the customer/banker relationship. We want them to succeed and we’ll do everything we can to help them move forward.”

Vibra Bank will offer customers a wide range of services to meet their needs, including online banking and remote deposit (www.vibrabank.com). In addition, Vibra Bank is expected to generate a full range of loan products, while focusing on loans to businesses and business owners.

Their commercial and industrial lending products will include both secured and unsecured credit lines, term credit for fixed asset purchases, letters of credit and loans that qualify under the SBA guaranty programs. Commercial real estate lending products will include loans on retail, industrial and office properties. Vibra Bank will also offer carefully selected construction financing. A variety of consumer financing products will also be available to customers.

Based upon an initial capital level of $14.8 million, the Bank’s lending limits can comfortably accommodate maximum credits to one borrower of approximately $3 million on a secured basis or $1.8 million on an unsecured basis. Loans which exceed the Bank’s legal lending limit may be extended if participation agreements are in place with Vibra’s correspondent banks or with other community banks in order to sell a portion of the loan and reduce the Bank’s exposure. Vibra Bank will not engage in subprime single-family residential lending.

Vibra Bank’s board includes notable names from the San Diego and Latino business and banking community, including Enrique Schon, Chairman of Vibra Bank’s board and Founder of Mexico’s Banco Mifel and President SARSAP, a major Tijuana commercial real estate development firm; former San Diego Police Chief David Bejarano; Howard B. Levenson, former Chairman and CEO of Western Financial Corporation/Co-Founder Southwest Community Bank; Jeffrey Davidow, President of the Institute of the Americas and former United States Ambassador to Venezuela and Mexico; Luis Maizel, Senior Managing Director and Co-Founder of LM Capital Management and LM Advisors, the second-largest Hispanic money management company in the United States; Max Freifeld, partner in Prediales Atenas S.A. de C.V., a real estate investment company, and partner, board member and consultant for Autos Orientales, S.A. de C.V., a Nissan automobile dealership in Mexico, and also Founder and former Director of Hipotecaria Nacional and Hipotecaria Vanguardia; Maru Davila, Chair of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Corporacion de Telecommunications Regionales, a telecommunications company she founded in Mexico; and Gershon Jaffe, Certified Public Accountant and Chief Financial Officer of Jaffe Finance Company, LLC, which specializes in asset-based financing and leasing for professionals. “*

The critics are buzzing about Barcelona-based electronic act The Pinker Tones‘ new album, ‘Wild Animals‘, as the group prepares to join the Vans Warped Tour on June 25 th in Phoenix. The dynamic duo will perform an extended set each night in the Skull Candy electronic music tent on the entire 44 date tour (SEE FULL TOUR DATES LISTING BELOW).

‘Wild Animals’ features a wide array of special vocal guests including reggae soul legend Jimmy Lindsay from Cymande on “The Whistling Song” and Amparo from Spanish band Amparanoia on “Electrotumbao”. First single will be the track, “Happy Everywhere.”

“Our last album, ‘The Million Colour Revolution’, was about utopia, a projection for how we wanted the world to be,” Mister Furia explains. “‘Wild Animals’ is about reality, our interpretation of the actual world we live in. Songs like “The Whistling Song”, “24″ and “On Se Promenait” are some of our happiest and most nostalgic yet.”

Just in 2007, the group was the subject of a New York Times feature, had an A&E television special, performed on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic”, had a song featured on hit sitcoms “Ugly Betty” and “Entourage” and saw heavy video play on networks like mtvU, MTV Tr3s, Mun2, and LATV. The Pinker Tones also made a major splash at last year’s SXSW, where they performed five shows in only 36 hours and also blew away the audience at KCRW’s Sounds Eclectic Evening in Los Angeles alongside leading artists like The Shins, Lily Allen and Rodrigo and Gabriela. The Pinker Tones recent single “Karma Hunters” was also selected by national bilingual youth network Mun2 as the theme song for its popular reality show ‘Chicas Project’.

This past August, The Pinker Tones released ‘More Colours!’, an album complete with infectious remixes and collaborations featuring a stellar lineup of artists including Kinky, Nortec Collective, Zeta Bosio (Soda Stereo) and Mexican Institute of Sound.   Over several national U.S. tours throughout 2007, the DJ crew brought their electrifying set to fans across the country. The New York Times even claimed that, “Unlike many electronica acts, The Pinker Tones thrive onstage.” With a live show that combines the intensity of a rock band and the excitement of a DJ set, the group is moving along on the path to global domination. The Pinker Tones have ventured from Barcelona to such faraway places as London, Caracas, Buenos Aires, Moscow, Toronto, Beijing and Johannesburg.

“Under investigation for two years for perjury, Steve Castañeda would tell anyone who would listen that there was nothing to worry about, he was not guilty of anything and that the truth would come forth.

After years of investigations and a month long trial, in April, Steve was acquitted of all charges. There was a huge sigh of relief in the knowledge that this whole sordid mess was finally over with! Still, the trial changed the man and refocused Steve Castañeda’s priorities in life.”*

Playwright pays tribute to his roots - Juan Felipe Herrera

“Chicano writer Juan Felipe Herrera remembers the region as very different when he grew up here in the 1950s.

“Tijuana was covered in grass, and Chula Vista seemed like a little town between Tijuana and San Diego,” he said. “The highway had only two lanes, one going south and one coming north.”

It was experiences like this, of growing up between two cultures, that inspired Herrera to become a writer.”*

Binational insurance a new frontier in health coverage

“San Diego Country Club sous chef Miguel Mijia spent a week in a Chula Vista, Calif., hospital a year ago after suffering a heart attack. Then he spent another week in a Tijuana, Mexico, hospital where he underwent triple-bypass surgery after a second heart attack. His employer-sponsored health insurance plan covered bills from both hospitals despite an international border separating the locations.

Mijia, who works in Chula Vista and lives in Tijuana, is among a growing number of Latino workers in Southern California whose health plans give them and their families access to networks of hospitals and doctors on both sides of the border.

With health insurance reform efforts taking center stage in Sacramento, Calif., this year, cross-border policies such as the one used by Mijia offer an enticing path for covering more workers from Mexico and other Latin American countries. They account for 57 percent of the state’s 6.7 million uninsured, according to figures from the California HealthCare Foundation. “*

“Chastened for their low-key coverage of the 2003 Cedar Fire, Spanish-language television and radio stations had another go at it in this year’s disaster. Telemundo and Univision joined forces Monday, streaming life-or-death information on evacuations, road closures and shelter sites in the tongue their viewers understand. NBC offered Spanish news updates between its English broadcast, winning praise from Latino leaders.

But the major Spanish stations didn’t start continuous coverage of the fire until Monday, endangering Spanish-speakers in Ramona and Potrero, where the first two blazes started Sunday and gained steam as residents went to bed Sunday evening. And Spanish-speakers haven’t been as well-served by city communications, some complain. Memos from the cities of San Diego and Chula Vista haven’t been translated into Spanish, forcing bilingual volunteers to step in.”*

Uncontrolled Blood Pressure Highest Among Hispanics, Prompting New National Hypertension Project

Tags: , , , , , , ,

“The National Alliance for Hispanic Health (the Alliance) is launching a new national program called Hypertension … Control is in your Hands (Presion alta … El control esta en tus manos) with the goal of raising awareness of hypertension (high blood pressure), promoting prevention, and helping Hispanic adults bring their high blood pressure under control.

The Alliance is conducting education and blood pressure screening events in collaboration with major community-based organizations in Miami, FL; New York, NY; San Antonio, TX; and San Ysidro, CA. The program is supported by an educational grant from Novartis.

“It’s of great concern that there is a significant proportion of the Hispanic population with hypertension who are unaware of their condition and do not have their high blood pressure under control,” said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. “As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Alliance and our partners are going to make a difference by launching a series of community education and blood pressure screening events that will improve health and save lives.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that Hispanics with hypertension are less likely to be aware of their condition. Among Mexican American adults with hypertension, only about half (49.8%) are aware of their condition and are less likely to have their hypertension under control (17.3%) compared to non-Hispanic blacks (29.8%) and non-Hispanic whites (29.8%) with high blood pressure.

While hypertension rates are lower among Mexican Americans, research from the Institute of Medicine and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute is raising concern that rates may increase after the first generation as Hispanics adopt unhealthy habits, including dietary practices. According to CDC, the age-adjusted prevalence of hypertension is 40.5% among non-Hispanic blacks, 27.4% for non-Hispanic whites, and 25.1% among Mexican Americans.

In addition to Hispanic Heritage Month hypertension screening events in San Ysidro, CA, Miami, FL, New York, NY, and San Antonio, TX, the Alliance announced the availability of personalized free information by calling the Alliance’s Su Familia National Hispanic Family Health Helpline (1-866-SU- FAMILIA or 1-866-783-2645). Callers can get basic information on hypertension and referral to health care providers where they live. In addition, as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Alliance is offering callers a free pocket- card for tracking their blood pressure, including key questions patients should ask their health care provider about hypertension.

According to Dr. Delgado, “knowing your blood pressure is one of the most important steps you can take para su salud.”

About the Hypertension … Control is in your Hands initiative

The CEH initiative is designed to increase awareness, prevention, and treatment for hypertension in the Hispanic community. Clinton Campaign Announces National Hispanic Leadership Council

“Hillary Clinton today announced the formation of the campaign’s National Hispanic Leadership Council and named its Executive Committee, demonstrating her growing support among the Hispanic community. Clinton made the announcement in Orlando, Florida, where she is participating in a Presidential Forum during the 24th Annual Conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).

The Executive Committee, comprised of national and local leaders from across the country, will serve as an advisory board for the campaign on issues important to the Latino community and will play an active role reaching out and organizing Hispanics in their communities and across the country.

“The support for Hillary Clinton in the Latino community continues to grow,” said Raul Yzaguirre, Campaign Co-Chair and Chair of Hispanic Outreach efforts. “I first met Hillary Clinton when she was registering voters in South Texas, and her commitment to public service continues today. Whether it’s fighting for universal health care, making college more accessible or creating better job opportunities, her record on issues important to Latinos speaks for itself. I am proud to support Hillary, and to be joined by such a strong group of leaders working on her behalf.”

“I support Hillary Clinton because she is the candidate that will help create opportunities to empower our communities across America,” said New York Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. “Hillary has consistently supported proposals that help strengthen the middle class and working families. In New York, I have witnessed her work to launch economic development initiatives to provide critical resources to small and micro businesses and helped launch a private sector initiative called New Jobs for New York that makes venture capital available to New York’s innovators, many of whom are Latinos.”

“I am proud to support Hillary Clinton for President,” said Florida State Rep. Luis Garcí. “As a life-long firefighter and former Fire Chief, I know the true meaning of public service and Hillary embodies that concept. Our country is ready for her strong leadership that will take our country in a new direction.”

“I am honored to be joined by so many leaders that have dedicated their lives to advocating for better education for our children, access to health care, civil and voting rights and advancing economic opportunities not only for Latinos, but for all Americans,” Clinton said. “With their support, we will continue taking our message of change across the country.”

A USA Today/Gallup poll released this week found that among Hispanic voters, Hillary Clinton leads the primary field by 46 points. Hillary Clinton has fought for many issues important to the Latino community, including education, health care, economic opportunities and a fair and humane immigration reform.

Toyota Launches Literacy Program for Hispanic and Other Immigrant Families in Wichita

“oyota today announced that three Wichita elementary schools will be among the newest sites for its successful Toyota Family Literacy Program TFLP. TFLP — the first nationwide program of its kind to focus on the needs of Hispanic and other immigrant families — is coordinated by the National Center for Family Literacy NCFL, the countrys leading advocate for family literacy.

Toyota has contributed $600,000 to fund the program at Park Elementary School, Colvin Elementary School and Stanley Elementary School. These there schools have an average of nearly 50 percent Hispanic student enrollment.

TFLP — which got its start in 2003 and is now functioning in 10 cities across the U.S. — aims to increase basic language and literacy skills among Hispanic and other immigrant families, and provide parents with the skills they need to help their children succeed in school. The program specifically serves children in kindergarten to third grade and their parents. TFLP is unique in that it incorporates NCFLs multicultural family literacy model, which combines key components including: ESL courses, early childhood education, parenting education, Parent and Child Together PACT activities, and computer-literacy instruction. Toyota has donated $26 million to the program since its inception.

In addition to the launch at these three schools, the funding will allow NCFL to provide comprehensive support for training, educational materials and assistance at each site. Wichita State University and Wichita Public Schools are working hand-in-hand with NCFL to implement the family literacy program.

Along with Wichita, four other cities are part of the latest expansion of the Toyota Family Literacy Program: Chula Vista, Calif.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; San Antonio, Texas; and Orlando, Fla. A total of 155 school districts submitted applications for the five spots, all vying for part of the overall $3 million grant from Toyota.

“The growing Hispanic population in Wichita has created a need for high-quality programs to support families in need,” said Donald L. Beggs, president, Wichita State University. “The Toyota Family Literacy Program encourages parental involvement in the public schools that can lead to better outcomes for young children,” he added. “Educating children in our elementary schools who speak English as a second language has been a major challenge for educators. Improving their outcomes through high-quality programs is a worthy goal.”

“The Toyota Family Literacy Program addresses two of the most critical factors in student success — strong literacy skills and meaningful parental involvement,” said Winston Brooks, superintendent, Wichita Public Schools. “Non-English speaking parents at Park, Colvin and Stanley elementary schools have the opportunity to increase their language skills, while at the same time becoming more involved in the education of their children both at school and at home. The commitment of this program to empower parents to help themselves and their children is tremendous.”

Early results from cities where TFLP has already implemented include:

Significant literacy gains by adults, the majority of which improved
their literacy scores by one or more levels
Ratings for children in the program that exceeded peers in areas
including academic performance, motivation to learn, attendance,
classroom behavior, involvement in classroom activities, and other
areas
70% of participating families holding a library card by the end of
the first year
Waiting lists at the majority of program sites due to high demand

“Partnering with Toyota, NCFL has nurtured a proven formula of research and delivery of family literacy services that not only works for the participants, it works for the betterment of the communities,” said Sharon Darling, president and founder of NCFL. “And, were proud to say, our path to success here in Wichita has been set by the impressive gains made by thousands of TFLP participants in family literacy programs throughout the nation.”

“As we expand the successful Toyota Family Literacy Program into communities across the country, we continue to hear the tremendous success stories from thousands of families in diverse communities,” said Patricia Pineda, group vice president, legal, philanthropy and administration at Toyota Motor North America. “Were thrilled to partner with NCFL to bring the program to Wichita and we look forward to making even more positive and lasting contributions to students and families.”"

“In 1976, Maxine Mahon, CBC Director, inaugurated the California Heritage Project. The Project features California – its history, composers, artists, and its dancers, with ballet stories drawn from historical narratives of San Diego and California.

This year’s performance of “The Legend of Josefa” by the California Ballet Company at Chula Vista Bayside Park, May 7, 2006, 2:00pm, will be the first installment of the newly reconstituted California Heritage Project. The outdoor, bayside setting was chosen both because of the aesthetic quality and because of the part that the waterfront played in the city’s history and in this particular story.”

CHULA VISTA – South County educators who have sued to have Spanish-language exams included in state testing appeared at a rally and news conference yesterday in support of a bill on the governor’s desk that would do just that.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has until Oct. 9 to sign or veto a bill by state Sen. Denise Ducheny, D-San Diego, to create a Spanish-language equivalent of the California Standards Tests. All second-through 11th-graders take these tests in English/language arts, math, science and social studies.
