The LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) has announced its full concert and showcase lineup, as well as panels. Among the highlights are a free Central Park Summer Stage concert on Saturday, July 14th with Mexican rock icons Café Tacuba, The Bronx’s own bilingual trip-hop/funk collective Pacha Massive, and up-and-coming Puerto Rican rapper La Sista. LAMC’s annual concert at Celebrate Brooklyn will take place the evening of Friday, July 13th in Prospect Park, and this year’s lineup will feature Zoé, Chetes and The Pinker Tones. Additional LAMC events include the Music & Film Night @ Central Park SummerStage, Indie Showcase @ The Mercury Lounge, MTV Tr3s/Batanga showcase @ Bowery Ballroom, Acoustic Showcase @ SOB’s, and Closing Night Party @ The Cooper Hewitt Museum.

“Those who think of contemporary Latin pop music in terms of Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin and reggaeton might be in for a surprise.

Although in the United States the world of “rock en Espanol” is mostly underground, restricted to play on college and internet radio, the genre is growing and finally gaining international recognition. Gerado Garza, a 26-year-old musician from Monterrey, Mexico who goes by the name Chetes, is one artist who is exploring and breaking the boundaries of pop music in Spanish. While Chetes has been performing since age 16 and is a former member of the Mexican bands Zurdok and Vaquero, “Blanco Facil” marks his debut as a solo artist.”

“Pop may be Mexicos chief musical export, but the label that brought the teen group RBD to the world is beefing up its U.S. promotion of a new wave of rock and alternative acts.

Emboldened by the success in Mexico of artists Chetes and Zoe, EMI Televisa will work them to college radio and alternative media in the United States this year. Glam-rockers Moderatto and electronica act Moenia will also be part of the new focus, a label source says.”

“LAST October a quiet and unassuming 26-year-old musician from Mexico arrived at Nashville International Airport to meet an American record producer he had known only through a few e-mail messages and a phone conversation. Neither had any idea what the other looked like.

The musician was Gerardo Garza, the floppy-haired, dirty-blonde It Boy of the alternative rock scene in Monterrey, Mexico, who goes by his lifelong nickname, Chetes. It’s Spanish shorthand for “cheeks”; Mr. Garza’s are noticeably pale and round. The producer was Ken Coomer, a Nashville studio whiz who played drums for the new-school Americanists Wilco and Uncle Tupelo, two bands Mr. Garza had only recently heard.”

“Mexico’s president condemned a violent uprising by residents that left a teenager dead and wounded dozens of people in a rebellious town outside the capital.

Just before dawn Thursday, police fired tear gas and crashed through human barricades to take control of San Salvador Atenco. Hours earlier, protesters had released six badly beaten police hostages. Some of them had been sliced with machetes.”

“Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ugueth Urbina was arrested and held yesterday in Venezuela pending a formal charge of attempted murder.

Last month Urbina and a group of men allegedly attacked five workers with machetes and poured gasoline on them in an attempt to set them on fire. All five were injured, some of them with cuts and one with burns on the back and right arm, police said.”
