The ALAS Organization’sConcierto Por Los Niños” (Concert For The Children) Unites Over 380,000 On-Site Fans and Millions of TV Viewers In A Momentous Show Of Solidarity To Aid Latin America’s Most Vulnerable Children

Over Two Dozen Of Latin Music’s Biggest Superstars Such As Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Juan Luis Guerra, Maná, Los Tigres del Norte, Gustavo Cerati, Calle 13 & Many More Appear At Historic Free Concerts In Mexico City & Buenos Aeries That Have Been Called ‘Latin America’s Live-Aid’

“crowds gathered in two of Latin America’s most iconic capitals, the excitement contagious.   Its not everyday that the region’s biggest names in entertainment gather in song and never before have they come together like this for a common cause. Ricky Martin, Shakira, Miguel Bosé-just a few of the dozens of Latin American artists hoping to use their music to launch a movement against childhood poverty in the region” – CNN

Two days after announcing that philanthropists such as Carlos Slim Helú, Howard Buffet had pledged more than $200 Million toward programs to aid impoverished children in Latin America, the ALAS (América Latina en Acción Solidaria ) organization – translated as ‘Wings’ in Spanish – brought nearly 400,000 concert fans and millions of TV viewers together through an unprecedented day of music entitled “El Concierto Por Los Niños” (The Concert For The Children. With more than two dozen of the Latin music world’s leading superstars (such as Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé and MANY more) taking to the stage at massive free concerts in Mexico City and Buenos Aires for an event already being dubbed by press as “Latin America’s Live Aid,” ALAS designed the historic event to inspire both public and private sector support for Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs to aid the more than 32 Million children in the region living in poverty.

“Not so long ago, Latin American artists who spoke up for social causes often risked prison, exile or far worse.  What a difference a generation makes… a phalanx of Spanish-speaking pop artists headed by Colombian superstar Shakira and Spanish-Italian singer Miguel Bosé gathered to promote a new initiative to aid Latin America’s millions of poor, malnourished and undereducated children. They were joined by the world’s second-richest man, a top U.S. philanthropist and an international mob of reporters drawn by a potent cocktail of celebrity, money and power, laced with an emerging social conscience … “What’s very inspiring is to see Latin America for the first time in charge of its own issues,” said Shakira… [the] concerts, the most high-profile project yet by Latin artists to fuse charity with celebrity, are expected to draw a total audience in the hundreds of thousands. ALAS is the first Latin American organization to bring together so many prominent artists and financial impresarios behind a single cause, early childhood development assistance” – Los Angeles Times

“…billionaire Carlos Slim Helú does not seem to like appearing in public, but he apparently could not resist an invitation from the Colombian pop star Shakira and about a dozen other Latin music stars. Mr. Slim was on hand in Mexico City for the announcement of two free rock concerts to raise awareness of ALAS, a foundation started by Shakira and other musicians….The goal of ALAS, which means “wings” in Spanish, is to press business leaders and governments to finance early-childhood development programs in Latin America. The foundation claimed a major success on Thursday [as] Mr. Slim pledged $110 million to children’s programs [and] Howard Buffett pledged $85 million to existing Latin American projects. “When Shakira calls, you show up, so here I am,” said Mr. Buffett – New York Times (Sunday Business Section)

“A lineup of Latin mega-stars including Shakira, Ricky Martin and Alejandro Sanz performed simultaneously on stages in Buenos Aires and Mexico City at the weekend, raising awareness for the needs of poor children in Latin America.

Outspoken Colombian rocker Juanes, one of the most anticipated performers at Saturday’s event, was absent due to problems with his plane.

Organized by the Fundacion ALAS (Latin America in Solidarity Action), the concerts, which have been widely referred to as the Latin American version of 2005’s Live 8 anti-poverty concerts, brought together more than 380,000 people in the Mexican capital’s Zocalo plaza and the riverside Costanera Sur in Buenos Aires. “Come back, Bill Gates! After some initial misgivings, the world had largely grown comfortable with the Microsoft founder as the closest thing capitalism has to a mascot—the No.1 spot on Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s wealthiest people. We liked that Gates was a self-made Harvard dropout; that he helped make computers easier to use; that, due largely to him, it was suddenly cool to be a geek. Anger over Microsoft’s near monopoly status had subsided in recent years due in part to Gates’s stunning philanthropy and the emergence of Apple as a hip corporate alternative. Having Gates atop the Forbes list told us a lot about the world we lived in—that we were all part of a “new economy,” an ideas-driven society where technology, innovation, and intellectual capital were the keys to getting filthy rich.

What, then, to make of the man who in the summer of 2007 appears to have replaced Gates as the world’s richest person? His name is Carlos Slim Helú. Today, his fortune stands at more than $59 billion—and grew, on average, more than $1 billion a month last year. What kind of world are we living in now? Slim has been widely accused of monopolistic practices; he catapulted himself to the top spot on the back of his company Teléfonos de México, or Telmex, which has a 92 percent stranglehold on his country’s local fixed-line market. Slim’s business empire, the scope of which is largely unprecedented in modern economic history, ranges from cigarettes to airlines, from electric cables to floor tiles. In all, Slim’s net worth is equivalent to a stunning 6.6 percent of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP), easily eclipsing Gates (0.4 percent of U.S. GDP) and even John D. Rockefeller at his peak (slightly less than 2 percent in 1937). Although it may be unsurprising to see such gross wealth disparity in Latin America, what do we make of the growing list of billionaires in countries such as China, India, and Russia that supposedly represent the global economy’s future? Are we entering a new era of robber barons? Does the shift of investment and production to emerging markets herald a rise in “crony capitalism” worldwide? Or does the rapidly accumulating wealth of Slim and his ilk merely signify an undesirable byproduct of a very desirable process—the spread of free-market capitalism around the globe?”*

U.S., Mexican states seek common border solutions

“In the wake of yet another failed attempt at U.S. immigration reform, governors from along the border meet this week as pressure builds for states to take the lead on immigration and security issues.

Mexican President Felipe Calderón, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Carlos Slim, the world’s richest man, are all expected to attend the two-day meeting in the Sonoran beach resort of Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point. It’s a sign, say state officials, that the ball is in their court.

“This shows the states taking the initiative, trying to discuss their common interests and coming to some solutions,” said Mario Welfo, a spokesman for Sonora Gov. Eduardo Bours Castelo. “

“Growing up in Mexico City, I always knew Mexico was an unjust country - a place where small coteries of the privileged control all power and wealth while half the population lives in poverty. But it never occurred to me that Mexico would have billionaires.

It does. According to Forbes magazine, last year there were 10 Mexicans among the world’s 946 billionaires.

That might not seem out of line in a country with 100 million-plus people, which accounts for about 1.6 percent of the global economy. But here’s what takes the cake, especially if you’re Mexican like me. Earlier this month, Fortune reported that Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican, had just surpassed Bill Gates to become the world’s richest man, with a fortune worth $59 billion.”

“Considered by some to be the world’s richest man, Mexican magnate Carlos Slim is increasingly showing interest in the US-Mexico border region. Slim´s latest foray into the borderlands was at an economic development conference held in the Sonora state capital of Hermosillo this week. At an event attended by business leaders and government officials from all the US-Mexico border states, Slim suggested that the Border Governor´s Conference, which is scheduled to meet later this summer, play a leading role in pushing a new development plan for both sides of the border. Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and Sonora Governor Eduardo Bours were among elected officials in attendance at the Hermosillo meeting.

“The important thing is to have a clear view of the future,” Slim said, “in order to focus actions with short- term, three-to-five year programs of action that define the direction.” In general terms, Slim called for mixing public and private financing to develop the border region.

The public sector can contribute educational, health and legal resources, he added.”

From Wikipedia: “His father Julián Slim (Yusef Salim) Haddad, a Lebanese Maronite Christian, fled as a teenager to Mexico City in 1902, to escape the harsh military rule of the Ottoman Turks. Julián established a dry goods store called La Estrella del Oriente (Star or the Orient) in 1911, and shrewdly bought up some prime real estate in the city centre.
