"The Hollywood stars were out last night in full force as nearly 1000 actors, entertainment industry executives, film and television studios and supporters attended the 23rd Annual Imagen Awards Gala ceremony at the nearly sold-out Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Actors John Leguizamo, Edward James Olmos, Lupe Ontiveros, Eva La Rue and Cesar Millan, Leonor Varela, Carlos Mencia, Dania Ramirez and many more could be seen gracing the Gala’s Red Carpet as fans, media, and the general public flocked to the hotel’s lobby and ballrooms for a glimpse.

18 awards were presented in a diverse range of entertainment categories in addition to several Imagen Foundation legacy awards: Actor Tony Plana received the Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award; HBO's In Treatment Producer/Director Rodrigo Garcia received the Creative Achievement Award; and Ligiah Villalobos, executive producer and writer of the feature film La Misma Luna, received the Foundation’s esteemed Norman Lear Writer's Award.
"This year we saw a massive increase in both the quantity and quality of exceptional submissions across categories," stated Helen Hernandez, Founder and President of The Imagen Foundation and creator of the pioneering Imagen Awards. "The A-list stars and luminaries this ceremony attracts each year from the world of Latino entertainment is truly reflective of the increased prevalence that we play in Hollywood, mainstream America, and throughout the world.”

The awards included presenters and coverage from LATV, the nation’s first bilingual entertainment/music network distributed via digital multicast, that will broadcast a one-hour special on their channel featuring Red Carpet arrivals and behind-the-scenes exclusives of nominated/winning Latinos from the 2008 Imagen Awards ceremony.

"This summer, Latino artists, comedians and entertainers are in the spotlight in the country's top travel destination: Las Vegas. Visitors from around the world are flocking to the Strip at the height of travel season to see award-winning musical talents such as Juanes, Ozomatli and Camila, as well as comedians like Carlos Mencia and George Lopez. In a city already known for world-class entertainment, these Latino acts are drawing sellout crowds.

Recently, Carlos Mencia, the Honduran-born host of Comedy Central's "Mind of Mencia" showcased his comedy at Pearl Concert Theater at The Palms Casino Resort; while Juanes, a three-time Latin Grammy-winning Colombian artist was at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Ozomatli, the Grammy-winning Latin fusion band, performed poolside at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino; Camila, the hit Mexican band, prepares for their live performance at The Joint (also at the Hard Rock) on June 20. The Grammy-nominated Mexican trio's third single, Todo Cambió, recently reached the #1 spot of Mexico's Top 100 Singles Chart.

The Strip is already preparing for Mexican Independence Day. Already lined up for the weekend, September 12-15, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is Luis Miguel. Leading Latin Pop Star Alejandro Fernández brings his new tour "VIENTO A FAVOR" to the Mandalay Bay Events Center Monday, Sept. 15. Tickets for Fernández are on sale now, while Miguel's are on sale June 7.

Packing an entire summer's worth of fun into one trip has never been easier than in fabulous Las Vegas. Whether it's the hottest new headliner, a chic restaurant opening or a VIP event at a trendy nightclub, there is always something exciting happening in Vegas.

There's a good reason why Las Vegas is called the "Entertainment Capital of the World." The biggest shows and brightest stars are within walking distance on the famed Strip. Elton John, Bette Midler and Cher have taken over The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, while Barry Manilow performs at the Las Vegas Hilton. The curtain rises on Mamma Mia! at Mandalay Bay and Jersey Boys at The Palazzo, while five different Cirque du Soleil shows entice guests to enjoy a different world. Beginning in September, Cirque du Soleil will add another show to the Strip with Criss Angel's Believe. Tickets are available now.

Las Vegas has redefined the culinary and wine experience by offering world-class restaurants, more Master Sommeliers than any other city in the world, more wine sold per capita than in any other destination and the most comprehensive collection of celebrity chefs including Guatemalan native Eduardo Perez, who command their own fan base of fine diners and culinary enthusiasts. Perez worked his way up within the renowned Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group family, and is now the executive chef of Trattoria del Lupo at Mandalay Bay.

As the dining scene evolves in Las Vegas, new restaurants continue to open nearly every month, providing unique experiences for repeat visitors. Some of the many new restaurants include: Mario Batali's first steakhouse Carnevino and fiery Brazilian SUSHISAMBA in The Palazzo, Payard Pâtisserie & Bistro at Caesars Palace, DJT in Trump International Hotel and Tower, RUB BBQ inside the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Kerry Simon's Simon at Palms Place and Hard Rock Hotel's AGO. Stephen Hanson and B.R. Guest opened Dos Caminos Las Vegas, at The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino, the first outside of New York City.

Enter any casino resort and discover amazing shopping opportunities around every corner. From Manolo and Jimmy Choo to Prada, Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, more than 700 different retail outlets and 11 million square feet of shopping fill the destination. One-of-a-kind shopping venues include Wynn Esplanade, The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, Mandalay Place, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, Via Bellagio, Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, Fashion Show Mall, Town Square and The Shoppes at Palazzo. For those looking to really indulge, The Strip is home to the Penske/Wynn Ferrari-Maserati dealership, as well as Lamborghini Las Vegas in The Palazzo.

ABOUT THE LVCVA
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) is charged with marketing Southern Nevada as a tourism and convention destination worldwide, and also with operating the Las Vegas Convention Center and Cashman Center. With approximately 136,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas alone and more than 9.7 million square feet of meeting and exhibit space citywide, the LVCVA's mission centers on attracting ever-increasing numbers of leisure and business visitors to the area. Bud Light and the Anheuser-Busch distributors of South Florida are donating 25 cents per case for every Budweiser, Bud Light and Budweiser Select 18-pack of bottles and cans sold at Sedano’s Supermarkets throughout South Florida. The money will go to the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana Scholarship Fund to help support Hispanic higher education in South Florida.

“Calle Ocho began in 1978 as a block party to celebrate the Cuban culture in Miami and has become a global festival that attracts hundreds of thousands to South Florida and makes a difference in the community,” said Dr. Ricardo Gonzalez, president of the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana. “Anheuser-Busch was one of our first sponsors, and their support is one of the reasons Calle Ocho has grown into the event it is today.”

Since the beginning of the festival, Anheuser-Busch has brought top Latino musicians to Calle Ocho, making its Musical Super Site one of the festival’s most popular attractions. Artists such as Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, Hector Lavoe and El Gran Combo have appeared on the stage. This year, the Bud Light Musical Super Site will be located between S.W. 23rd Avenue and S.W. 24th Avenue at S.W. Eighth Street, and entertainment will begin at noon on March 16. The 2008 lineup features Grammy winning Cuban singer and composer Albita Rodriguez, Grammy Award and Latin Grammy Award-nominated singer La India and Venezuelan salsa musician Oscar D' Leon. The concerts will be free and open to the public.

“For generations, Anheuser-Busch has been active in the Latino community as part of our tradition of giving back to the communities where we live and work,” said Paco Bendaña, director of community relations, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “We’re proud to partner with the Kiwanis of Little Havana to support higher education and celebrate Latino culture through Calle Ocho.”

To celebrate Calle Ocho’s 30-year anniversary, Anheuser-Busch also sponsored the documentary “Calle Ocho – 30 Years and Counting.” The documentary will air as a television special on PBS in South Florida in April and nationally during Hispanic Heritage Month in October. The documentary showcases Calle Ocho through the decades with historical photos and news clips of the eras.

“We’re pleased to partner with Anheuser-Busch to support a great festival and a very important cause. The Kiwanis club of Little Havana has provided educational opportunities to so many South Florida students over the years through their Scholarship Foundation, and we’re please to share in that success by participating in this promotion.” said Javier Herran, director of marketing, Sedano’s Supermarkets.

Anheuser-Busch’s support of the Latino community dates back more than a century. The company supports approximately 400 community-based, local and national Latino organizations with contributions totaling nearly $52 million during the past two decades. Anheuser-Busch also currently sponsors the Mexican National Soccer Team and Chivas Soccer as well as top entertainers like Carlos Mencia. Anheuser-Busch’s efforts in the Latino community focus on values such as education, leadership development, economic empowerment, public advocacy and arts and culture. As a result, the company has the No. 1 and No. 2 beer brands in the Latino market — Bud Light and Budweiser. To learn more about these efforts, please visit http://www.Latinobud.com. "

"He's baaaaaack!!! Did you think -- even for one second -- he wouldn't be? Gifted Hispanic comedian Carlos Mencia is poised again to steal the year's really big ad show in a new commercial brewery giant Anheuser-Busch is prepping for the Super Bowl of Advertising on Feb. 3.

Per Bob Lachky, A-B's executive vice president of global industry & creative development, final decisions about which of some 20-plus possible spots will make the brewery's always anticipated Super Bowl lineup may not be made until three days before the big game. But the new Mencia piece is sure to be in the mix of six 30-second spots and one 60-second execution. We were given a sneak peek at a number of ads under consideration."

"Grupo Gallegos won Best of Show at the 9th Annual Advertising Age Hispanic Creative Advertising Awards presented in cooperation with the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies (AHAA) Friday evening in New York. The Long Beach, California-based Hispanic agency was the biggest winner of the evening picking up five other awards for Comcast (a TV Gold, two TV Silvers, a Radio Silver, and a Multimedia Bronze), as well as Gold and Silver TV awards for Energizer batteries and the California Milk Processor Board.

The Best of Show winning spot, titled "Ketchup," pitches a Comcast Triple Play package for broadband, phone and cable service positioned as so attractively priced that your wallet is grateful. In the spot, the grateful wallet makes a bizarre leap off the table to shield its owner from flying ketchup. "The judges picked a Best of Show that showed that price promotions, which usually aren't very creative, can be winners if they are based on a clever idea," said Laurel Wentz, Advertising Age's international and multicultural editor.

This year's competition drew a record number of entries, 718, evaluated in the following categories: television, radio, magazine, newspaper, out-of- home, multimedia, nontraditional/guerrilla marketing, interactive and direct marketing. Two new categories were added this year, Bicultural and English- speaking Hispanics to reflect the growth of marketing efforts toward English- speaking Hispanics as well as the Spanish-dominant. The new Beyond Hispanic category recognizes that Hispanic agencies are increasingly being tapped by marketers to do broader multicultural efforts or general market work, such as the LatinWorks spot starring Carlos Mencia for Anheuser-Busch's Bud Light, which debuted on the Super Bowl this year.

"We continue to raise the bar in creative excellence," said Jackie Bird, AHAA chairwoman and president of WingLatino. "The quality of our work just keeps getting better and better as exemplified by the amazing work showcased during the ceremony. We are breaking barriers and using traditional advertising in interesting ways to connect with the multi-dimensional Hispanic consumer. We are demonstrating that we aren't creating great Hispanic advertising, we are creating great advertising that just happens to target Hispanic consumers."

The panel of judges was chaired by Aldo Quevedo, president and chief creative officer of Dieste, Harmel & Partners. The jury was composed of four creative talents: Quevedo; Juan Oubina, creative director, Grupo Gallegos; Andres Ordonez, VP-creative director, Zubi Advertising; and Paco Olavarrieta, creative consultant, and three senior marketers Graciela Eleta de Cacho, VP- multicultural development organization for North America, Procter & Gamble Co.; Isaac Mizrahi, director-multicultural marketing, Sprint; and Daniel Villarroel, director-multiethnic marketing, Maybelline New York and Garnier.

For the first time, a separate jury judged the fast-growing interactive category and included judges Rick Marroquin, CMO, Batanga; Fernanda Romano, executive creative director, Lowe Worldwide; Priscila Aviles Jamison, senior director, ethnic brands-creative, McDonald's/U.S. marketing.

The awards show followed AHAA's fall conference and was organized by Dieste, Harmel & Partners. The gala featured the El Día de Los Muertos theme from the conference and was co-hosted by actors Manny Perez and Genesis Rodriguez.

A special report on the Hispanic winners is featured on AdAge.com and the winning work can be viewed in the November 5th issue of Advertising Age.

"I'm a huge fan of both stand-up and sketch comedy—well, comedy in general. In a life filled with stress, bills, work and constant images of war, poverty and a world in peril, sometimes it seems that all we have is our sense of humor. I'm a firm believer that laughter is the best medicine. It's always worked for me. My lifelong appreciation for the extremely difficult art of comedy began around the age of seven, when my dad used to allow me to stay up late and watch the very first "Not Ready for Prime-Time Players" take the airways hostage on NBC's Saturday Night Live. Since Belushi, Murray, Ackroyd and company first poked fun at presidents and celebrities alike in front of a live audience some 30 years ago, sketch comedy shows (including SNL) have become mainstays on both network and cable TV, providing a lighter perspective on our not-so-funny world.

A few years back, popular comedian Dave Chappelle combined his stand-up skills with sketches based on his act on Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show, which became an instant International hit. Shortly thereafter, the cable network for comedy groupies approached an edgy Hispanic comedian popular on the stand-up circuit, Carlos Mencia, about doing a show similar in format to Chappelle's. The timing couldn't have been better. The new show, Mind of Mencia debuted in the wake of Chappelle's turbulent departure, paving the way for a new king of sketch comedy. Now in its third season, Mind of Mencia is one of Comedy Central's top rated programs, falling just behind South Park.

I caught up with Carlos Mencia by phone before his stand-up tour, which makes a stop in St. Louis on Thurs., Oct. 25 at the Fox Theater. He was easy and delightful to talk to—evidence of why his show relates to so many people. We chatted about his family life growing up in East L.A. and his thoughts on comedy and his stellar career."

"There’s nobody Carlos Mencia won’t skewer. Black, white. Hispanic, Anglo. Gay, Christian, Muslim. His hit Comedy Central show, “Mind of Mencia,” slams them all.

So it’s no surprise that the Honduran-American comedian raised in an East L.A. housing project is sitting here joking about why Hispanics (actually, he prefers the term Beaners), are sometimes compelled to choose the most Anglo-sounding repairman in the phone book.

"Its time to cool down with red hot stand-up comedy Comedian Gabriel Iglesias rocks the mic with all-new hilarious jokes in his latest one-hour stand-up special. The World Television Premiere of "Gabriel Iglesias: Hot and Fluffy" debuts on COMEDY CENTRAL Saturday, August 4 at 10:00 p.m.

From the Fox Theater in Bakersfield, California, learn what voice master Gabriel Iglesias does when he impersonates George Lopez in a strip club, Carlos Mencia on stage and large-breasted women at theme parks. Viewers will even discover the best way to get out of a speeding ticket and why "fluffy" men and Volkswagen Beetles never mix. Get ready for all-new caliente comedy in this all-new World Television Premiere special.

Iglesiass style of comedy is a mixture of story telling with characters and sound effects that bring his issues to life. His amazing ability to cross over with his clean animated style of comedy has made him a big demand in all markets. In 2000, Iglesias won a Kids Choice Award for the Nickelodeon TV show "All That." In 2004 and 2005, Iglesias was voted into the Top 25 comedians of COMEDY CENTRALs end-of-year "Stand-Up Showdown." As one of the fastest rising stars in the recent boom of Latino comedians, Iglesias was also put on the map by the Galavision TV show, "Que Locos". This highly successful television comedy hour quickly spawned a nationwide tour of sold- out performances across the country. The experience not only helped to develop Iglesiass loyal fan base, but also led him to additional film and television roles. He has guest-starred on ABCs "My Wife & Kids," Showtimes "Resurrection Boulevard" and was involved in the WB pilot for "Deez Nuts"."
