"Arbitron Inc. launches its "Read to Grow" pilot community outreach program at El Festival de la Ocho in Miami where it will feature celebrated local children's author Lucía González. This year marks Arbitron's first time participating in the renowned Miami festival, better known as Calle Ocho, on March 15, 2009 from 11am to 7pm.

Arbitron brings its "Read to Grow" Reading Corner to the annual event to promote reading among school aged children in multicultural communities, and in partnership with the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will feature Lucía González, storyteller, librarian and award-winning Cuban author of the Pura Belpré Honor Book "The Storyteller's Candle/La velita de los cuentos."

Long fascinated by the folktales of other countries, it has been Lucía's goal as an author and storyteller to bring the legends of Hispanic cultures to American children. In her latest book, The Storyteller's Candle/La velita de los cuentos," published by Children's Book Press (www.childrensbookpress.org) of San Francisco, an independent nonprofit publisher of multicultural and bilingual picture books, Lucía shares the story of how Pura Belpré, New York's first Latina librarian, brought the magic of the public library to the children of El Barrio.

Arbitron's reading corner will feature story time with multicultural authors. Readings will take place every hour on the half hour. Children attending the readings will learn about Arbitron's radio rating services, have the opportunity to play a comprehension game based on the story that they have heard, receive a copy of the book, and meet Lucía González. This initiative is an example of Arbitron's commitment to the local community of Miami and its strong cultural heritage.

About Arbitron's "Read to Grow - Children Reading Corner":

As part of Arbitron's community outreach program, the "Read to Grow" children's reading corner is targeted to local market communities with messages reinforcing community values and the importance of connecting with their cultural heritage through reading. This grassroots program aims to:

- Engage families and members of the community in a family centered activity that reinforces the importance of reading in children's development.

- Celebrate cultural heritage by including book selections that highlight local authors, multicultural folk tales and ALA/ALSC award-winning books and authors.

"Our primary goal is to encourage children and their parents to find joy in reading and encourage the reading of books that provide a cultural connection to community," said Stacie de Armas, Director Office of Multicultural Business Affairs at Arbitron.

Added Clara Carneiro, VP Office of Multicultural Business Affairs: "We look forward to learning from this pilot and developing a model for programs that can be replicated in other markets throughout the country."

"The Budweiser family of beers and the Anheuser-Busch distributors of South Florida are donating $20,000 to fund Latino higher education scholarships through a retail promotion benefiting the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation. The promotion runs through March 15, the day of the Calle Ocho Festival. "When we awarded our first scholarships in 1987, Budweiser was one of our first sponsors, and the company has supported us every year since," said Carlos Halley, chairman, Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation. "Together we have awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to Latino students in South Florida." Budweiser family and the Anheuser-Busch distributors are donating 25 cents per case for every Budweiser, Bud Light and Budweiser Select 18-pack of bottles and cans sold at all 30 Sedano's Supermarkets locations. The scholarships will be awarded to Latino students in South Florida to fund tuition and books over the four years of their college career. Scholarship recipients also receive mentoring and counseling to help them prepare for graduation and entry into the workforce. The Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation is the charitable arm of Carnaval Miami, which celebrates Latino culture in South Florida by organizing the Calle Ocho Festival each year. The donation will be presented at the Calle Ocho annual gala in Miami on March 13. "For more than 100 years, Anheuser-Busch has supported the Latino community as part of our tradition of giving back to the communities where we live and work," said Paco Bendana, director of community affairs and consumer outreach, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. "The major focus of these efforts has been supporting higher education. We're proud to partner with the Kiwanis of Little Havana in their efforts to expand access to higher education for Latinos in South Florida." "Sedano's is honored to once again be a partner in supporting education and we commend the efforts of Anheuser-Busch, leaders in supporting Hispanic education initiatives like this one, and the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation," said Javier Herran, director of marketing, Sedano's Supermarkets. "We are pleased to join with them to make Carnaval Miami not only a celebration, but an opportunity to help local students reach their higher education goals. It is gratifying to know that the dollars raised will go to South Florida students." Anheuser-Busch has supported approximately 400 community-based, local and national Latino organizations with contributions totaling nearly $60 million during the past two decades alone. Anheuser-Busch currently sponsors the Mexican National Soccer Team, Chivas de Guadalajara, WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres and UFC Lightweight Efrain Escudero. Anheuser-Busch's efforts focus on values such as education, environment, economic development, minority affairs and arts and culture.

"It's mid-March, which means it's time for Carnaval Miami's legendary Calle Ocho street party. The free event — this year celebrating its 30th anniversary — attracts more than a million people from all over the world, making it the largest Spanish-language music festival in the nation.

It all began in 1978, when the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana organized a Cuban-style carnival to highlight Miami's growing Hispanic heritage. But what originally started out as a local celebration of Cuban culture quickly grew to encompass music genres from all of Latin America."

"Bud Light and the Anheuser-Busch family of distributors are joining to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Calle Ocho through a retail promotion benefiting the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana’s Scholarship Fund. The promotion runs through March 16, the day of the Calle Ocho Festival.

Bud Light and the Anheuser-Busch distributors of South Florida are donating 25 cents per case for every Budweiser, Bud Light and Budweiser Select 18-pack of bottles and cans sold at Sedano’s Supermarkets throughout South Florida. The money will go to the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana Scholarship Fund to help support Hispanic higher education in South Florida.

“Calle Ocho began in 1978 as a block party to celebrate the Cuban culture in Miami and has become a global festival that attracts hundreds of thousands to South Florida and makes a difference in the community,” said Dr. Ricardo Gonzalez, president of the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana. “Anheuser-Busch was one of our first sponsors, and their support is one of the reasons Calle Ocho has grown into the event it is today.”

Since the beginning of the festival, Anheuser-Busch has brought top Latino musicians to Calle Ocho, making its Musical Super Site one of the festival’s most popular attractions. Artists such as Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, Hector Lavoe and El Gran Combo have appeared on the stage. This year, the Bud Light Musical Super Site will be located between S.W. 23rd Avenue and S.W. 24th Avenue at S.W. Eighth Street, and entertainment will begin at noon on March 16. The 2008 lineup features Grammy winning Cuban singer and composer Albita Rodriguez, Grammy Award and Latin Grammy Award-nominated singer La India and Venezuelan salsa musician Oscar D' Leon. The concerts will be free and open to the public.

“For generations, Anheuser-Busch has been active in the Latino community as part of our tradition of giving back to the communities where we live and work,” said Paco Bendaña, director of community relations, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “We’re proud to partner with the Kiwanis of Little Havana to support higher education and celebrate Latino culture through Calle Ocho.”

To celebrate Calle Ocho’s 30-year anniversary, Anheuser-Busch also sponsored the documentary “Calle Ocho – 30 Years and Counting.” The documentary will air as a television special on PBS in South Florida in April and nationally during Hispanic Heritage Month in October. The documentary showcases Calle Ocho through the decades with historical photos and news clips of the eras.

“We’re pleased to partner with Anheuser-Busch to support a great festival and a very important cause. The Kiwanis club of Little Havana has provided educational opportunities to so many South Florida students over the years through their Scholarship Foundation, and we’re please to share in that success by participating in this promotion.” said Javier Herran, director of marketing, Sedano’s Supermarkets.

Anheuser-Busch’s support of the Latino community dates back more than a century. The company supports approximately 400 community-based, local and national Latino organizations with contributions totaling nearly $52 million during the past two decades. Anheuser-Busch also currently sponsors the Mexican National Soccer Team and Chivas Soccer as well as top entertainers like Carlos Mencia. Anheuser-Busch’s efforts in the Latino community focus on values such as education, leadership development, economic empowerment, public advocacy and arts and culture. As a result, the company has the No. 1 and No. 2 beer brands in the Latino market — Bud Light and Budweiser. To learn more about these efforts, please visit http://www.Latinobud.com. "
