“MTV Tr3s and five-time LATIN GRAMMY
winners CALLE 13 are teaming to give fans a triple dose of exclusive and
first-ever experiences in anticipation of the duo’s new album, “Los de
Atras Vienen Conmigo” (’The Ones Left Behind Are Coming With Me’), set to
drop on October 7th.

Declared “the most musically adventurous group in Latin hip-hop, maybe
in hip-hop, period” by The Los Angeles Times, Calle 13 will perform at the
first MTV Tr3s Pre-VMA Party on September 4th in Hollywood — marking the
first-ever performance by a Latin act at a Video Music Awards event. Party
guests, who will include fans, music executives and celebrities, will be
treated to the live performance premiere of songs from “Los de Atras Vienen
Conmigo.” This event signals the channel’s commitment to both established
and emerging Latino talent. Fans across the country can catch all the
action when MTV Tr3s streams the party performances on September 5th on
MTV.com www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/2008/video.jhtml. Portions of the
performances will also appear on MTV Tr3s and Los Angeles affiliate
KBEH-Channel 63 on the night of the MTV Video Music Awards on September 7th
at 9PM SHARP (ET/PT).

Following the MTV Video Music Awards pre-party performance, Calle 13
will be featured in the channel’s award winning “Artist Speaking Tr3s”
campaign starting September 15th. The campaign is a creative collaboration
between the channel and Calle 13 and will take advantage of the creativity
and unique sensibilities the duo always bring to their work, while also
showing off the irreverent side of their personalities. Calle 13’s “Artist
Speaking Tr3s” features vignettes that challenge perceptions and
stereotypes. Fans get to watch as the circumstances of four ordinary
Latinos are transformed, destroyed and/or changed, and will also have the
opportunity to see exclusive performances. The campaign will also include
exclusive specials such as “Qui and Ey,” where fans get to have their
questions answered directly by Calle 13, and “Tr3s or False,” an
interactive special.

Finally, MTV Tr3s will launch its TR3SPASS CONCERT SERIES with Calle 13
as the headlining artist and Kinky as the opening act. The TR3SPASS CONCERT
SERIES is the most important expression to date of the channel’s commitment
to deepen the connection its viewers have to their favorite artists.
TheTR3SPASS CONCERT SERIES dates featuring Calle 13 are:

October 9th - New York, NY - Nokia Theatre Times Square
October 10th - Miami, FL - La Covacha
October 30th - Chicago, IL - Volkan
October 31st - Houston, TX - Warehouse Live
November 14th - San Francisco, CA - Regency Ballroom at the Grand
November 15th, Los Angeles, CA - Club NOKIA

“MTV Tr3s Pre-VMA Party 2008 is one example of how MTV Tr3s is now
fully integrated into MTV’s broader strategy,” said Jesus Lara, Senior Vice
President, Music and Talent, MTV Tr3s and MTV/VH1 Latin America. “Calle 13
is one of the most exciting, provocative and innovative artists in the
Latin music today. We are thrilled to be working with them on so many
levels.”

MTV Tr3s provided early support to Calle 13 by featuring the duo in its
first-ever live performance of “No Hay Igual” with Nelly Furtado in New
York’s Time Square when the channel launched in 2006. Calle 13 was also
named as one of the first MTV Tr3s Artist of the Month selections in 2007.
Recognizing Calle 13’s commitment to social justice, MTV Tr3s also featured
vocalist Residente as a panelist during its “Beyond Borders” immigration
forum last year.

The Upcoming Third Album From The World’s Most Critically Acclaimed Latin-Urban Group Is A Rallying Cry For Those That A Society of Privilege Has Left Behind

“Provocative, outrageously irreverent… the most musically adventurous group in Latin hip-hop, maybe in hip-hop, period… Nothing so raw and outrageous has ever been heard in Latin musicLos Angeles Times

With their self-titled debut, the Puerto Rican duo of Calle 13 unleashed an explosive album that was greeted as “a revolutionan artistic evolution… the most ground-breaking album of the year” (Miami Herald) for expanding the horizons of Latin-Urban music beyond the constraints of just reggaeton. Musical peers around the Latin world recognized the innovative nature of the album and its accompanying visual imagery by bestowing three LATIN GRAMMY Awards to the two young brothers: “Best New Artist” – “Best Urban Music Album” & “Best Short Form Music Video”.

Where many groups could easily stumble in trying to follow-up such a high-profile debut, Calle 13 returned quickly and pushed the envelope of their genre immeasurably further with the 2007 release of the milestone album Residente & Visitante. By fusing hip-hop and the sounds of Puerto Rico with musical elements from the rest of Latin America (such as cumbia, tango and more), while taking their trademark no-holds-barred / confrontational lyrics even further, Calle 13 created an album that not only debuted at #1 on the Latin charts, but was widely hailed as a new masterpiece of pan-regional fusion.  In addition to winning the GRAMMY award for “Best Latin Urban Album” and also sweeping the urban categories at the LATIN GRAMMY awards, Residente & Visitante, was selected by the New York Times as one of the world’s five best albums of the year, and saw the Los Angeles Times likewise declare it as the year’s most significant Latin music work.

In numerous similar accolades, critics embraced Calle 13 because of their ceaseless experimentation and refusal to accept any limitations – musically, lyrically or socially.  While the notion of “pushing boundaries” may be applied far too loosely to other artists today, it is without doubt the driving creative mantra of Calle 13 - whether in the constant pursuit of new musical frontiers by Visitante (Eduardo José Cabra Martínez) or Residente’s (René Pérez Joglar) captivating performance capability and show-no-mercy lyrical assaults on targets ranging from the playful (such as the musical repetitiveness of other artists or his own failure to keep up with a sexually stronger woman), to the deadly serious (The FBI, immigration policy, police shootings in Puerto Rico and so much more).

Now, Calle 13’s Latin music revolution is set to continue with a third chapter - the planned October 7, 2008 release of Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo (rough translation: The Ones Left Behind Are Coming With Me). In the spirit previously displayed on the biting immigration anthem “Pal Norte” (Going North), the new album provides a rally cry for those that a society of privilege has left behind.  Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo will also see Calle 13 expand their musical palette once again, by not only delving deeper into Latin America with rhythms such as cumbia villera from Argentina, but also utilizing more international fusions such as the sounds of gypsy music from Eastern Europe.

Look for more news shortly on the special guests that will appear on Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo, the upcoming first singleset to go to radio in mid-August, and a series of special concert performances to unveil the new album.

The historic, first-ever of its kind on network TV event, brought together artists such as Ana Ortiz, Calle 13’s Residente and Malverde; young people from Cal State L.A; and U.S. Congressman Xavier Becerra to explore solutions to the immigration crisis and discuss its impact on their families, education and everyday lives. It was hosted by journalist Gustavo Arellano.

The ALAS Organization’sConcierto Por Los Niños” (Concert For The Children) Unites Over 380,000 On-Site Fans and Millions of TV Viewers In A Momentous Show Of Solidarity To Aid Latin America’s Most Vulnerable Children

Over Two Dozen Of Latin Music’s Biggest Superstars Such As Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Juan Luis Guerra, Maná, Los Tigres del Norte, Gustavo Cerati, Calle 13 & Many More Appear At Historic Free Concerts In Mexico City & Buenos Aeries That Have Been Called ‘Latin America’s Live-Aid’

“crowds gathered in two of Latin America’s most iconic capitals, the excitement contagious.   Its not everyday that the region’s biggest names in entertainment gather in song and never before have they come together like this for a common cause. Ricky Martin, Shakira, Miguel Bosé-just a few of the dozens of Latin American artists hoping to use their music to launch a movement against childhood poverty in the region” – CNN

(see full CNN segment here: http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl=7872472&ch=4226714&src=news)

Two days after announcing that philanthropists such as Carlos Slim Helú, Howard Buffet had pledged more than $200 Million toward programs to aid impoverished children in Latin America, the ALAS (América Latina en Acción Solidaria ) organization – translated as ‘Wings’ in Spanish – brought nearly 400,000 concert fans and millions of TV viewers together through an unprecedented day of music entitled “El Concierto Por Los Niños” (The Concert For The Children. With more than two dozen of the Latin music world’s leading superstars (such as Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé and MANY more) taking to the stage at massive free concerts in Mexico City and Buenos Aires for an event already being dubbed by press as “Latin America’s Live Aid,” ALAS designed the historic event to inspire both public and private sector support for Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs to aid the more than 32 Million children in the region living in poverty.

“Not so long ago, Latin American artists who spoke up for social causes often risked prison, exile or far worse.  What a difference a generation makes… a phalanx of Spanish-speaking pop artists headed by Colombian superstar Shakira and Spanish-Italian singer Miguel Bosé gathered to promote a new initiative to aid Latin America’s millions of poor, malnourished and undereducated children. They were joined by the world’s second-richest man, a top U.S. philanthropist and an international mob of reporters drawn by a potent cocktail of celebrity, money and power, laced with an emerging social conscience … “What’s very inspiring is to see Latin America for the first time in charge of its own issues,” said Shakira… [the] concerts, the most high-profile project yet by Latin artists to fuse charity with celebrity, are expected to draw a total audience in the hundreds of thousands. ALAS is the first Latin American organization to bring together so many prominent artists and financial impresarios behind a single cause, early childhood development assistance” – Los Angeles Times

“…billionaire Carlos Slim Helú does not seem to like appearing in public, but he apparently could not resist an invitation from the Colombian pop star Shakira and about a dozen other Latin music stars. Mr. Slim was on hand in Mexico City for the announcement of two free rock concerts to raise awareness of ALAS, a foundation started by Shakira and other musicians….The goal of ALAS, which means “wings” in Spanish, is to press business leaders and governments to finance early-childhood development programs in Latin America. The foundation claimed a major success on Thursday [as] Mr. Slim pledged $110 million to children’s programs [and] Howard Buffett pledged $85 million to existing Latin American projects. “When Shakira calls, you show up, so here I am,” said Mr. Buffett – New York Times (Sunday Business Section)

“A spectacular lineup of performers join in a call-to-action to support millions of children living in poverty in Latin America…The concert features some of Latin America’s leading artists: - New York Daily News

Calle 13, Tego, Daddy get Grammy nods

“When you check the list of nominees for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, to be given out on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles, don’t be surprised to see more Latino hip hop acts than last year.

It’s because they have their own category — Best Urban Album — as opposed to the last year’s genre-blender Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album award — won by Maná.

“Last year’s category was a little strange,” said René (Residente) Pérez, Calle 13’s lead singer, who was nominated both years, and welcomes the urban-only category.
“They may have seen that something’s cooking in [the Latin Urban movement].””*

‘Karlifornia’ Puts A New Lens On L.A. - New MTV Tr3s original reality production introduces Karli Henriquez - Premieres on November 13th at 4 PM

“-“Karlifornia,” the newest offering from MTV Tr3s, is a weekly one-hour show that invites viewers to live the L.A. lifestyle as the cameras follow Karli Henriquez, the quintessential Angelina, as she opens up about growing up in L.A., her personal life, family, dating and more while hanging out with her favorite artists and actors and everyone who is making a mark in the City of Angels. “Karlifornia” premieres on MTV Tr3s on November 13th at 4 PM.

“Growing up in L.A. is the most awesome experience ever and I can’t wait to introduce MTV Tr3s viewers to my world and mi familia” says Karli. “Having my own TV show is a dream come true and I promise viewers they’re going to love getting to know L.A. ‘Karlifornia,’ style!”

In the first episode Karli gets pointers from her gal pal Audrina Patridge from MTV’s “The Hills,” checks in with a psychic about the future of her new show and introduces viewers to the artist LaLa whose song “la la la” is the theme song for “Karlifornia.” Videos by Karli’s favorites artists are included in every episode.

“Karlifornia” is a channel-defining program for MTV Tr3s because it draws directly on the experiences of Karli, a young Latina who grew up in a bilingual, bicultural world and is using her unique sense of style and perspective to succeed in life.

“Karli really represents the best of Latino youth. She is proud, smart and totally open to new experiences. Her love of life is infectious and she really has her finger on the pulse of the hottest music, fashion and cultural trends,” says Lily Neumeyer, Vice President of Programming and Production for MTV Tr3s. “Our audience is going to really enjoy getting to know Karli and discovering all that “Karlfornia” has to offer.”

Karli got her start in radio, first as an intern, then as a member of the station’s street team and ultimately as on-air talent for the JoJo on the Radio program on KIIS-FM. She sees herself as an inspiration to young Latinas who are chasing their dreams just as she is doing.

Karli gets her own inspiration from role models such as Jennifer Lopez and Oprah Winfrey for their entertainment success, hard work, leadership and influence on other people and most of all, from her abuelita, who is her heroine.

Raised in a Mexican and Salvadoran family, Karli grew up listening to Vicente Fernandez, Celia Cruz and New Kids on the Block. Today she fills her iPod with tunes by artists such as Belanova, Calle 13 and Kanye West.

Away from work Karli likes shopping, dancing, reading, having some occasional outdoor adventures and spending time with her family. Finding new restaurants, clubs and places to visit are also among her favorite pastimes.

Karli was raised in Hollywood, California until moving to the San Fernando Valley where she graduated from Reseda High School. She plans to pursue a college degree in Business.

Following the premiere of “Karlifornia,” a companion Karli blog will be launched on mtvtr3s.com where viewers will be able to give Karli feedback about the show and comment on everything from her choice of guys, clothes and more.
