““Nuestro Orgullo. Nuestra Cerveza.” That’s Crown Imports’ tagline—which translates to “Our Pride. Our Beer”—for the latest Corona Extra TV and radio campaign, targeting non-Mexican Latinos.

TV ads for the Spanish effort, created by Casanova Pendrill, Costa Mesa, Calif., started appearing this week and will run nationwide. One vignette celebrates Hispanic music and traditions with a San Antonio scene showing Mexican Americans dancing at a fiesta, followed by a wedding in New York featuring a Caribbean-style band, and revelers dancing to Norteña music in Los Angeles. A second spot focuses on sports and features a runner of Caribbean-Hispanic descent racing in a Los Angeles marathon, in addition to Latinos in baseball, boxing and soccer.”*

Here is a look at 12 colorful Colombians, of varying levels of technical competence, who have entertained American fans — some are still doing so.”*

“Funny, eh? The man who was voted American League Most Valuable Player in 1988, after posting the first 40-40 season in the big leagues, has scheduled a boxing match. Having extended invitations to anyone who dared to accept his challenge, he is scheduled to fight Vai Sikahema, the former Philadelphia Eagle who now is a TV sports anchor.

I wish this were a publicity stunt. A way for Jose to get his name in the papers and on ESPN.

It’s not. He’s had so much publicity - of all kinds - in recent years that it’s coming out of his ears. Many of those who didn’t know of his tape-measure homers have been introduced to the retired ballplayer prostituting himself, burying any dignity he once had.”*

“Last night, the Univision Television Network celebrated the grand finale of the second hit season of “Nuestra Belleza Latina” (Our Latin Beauty), a show that combines the glamour of a beauty competition with the excitement of reality television. Hosted by popular Univision personality Giselle Blondet, the finale was a nailbitting elimination for the six finalists who awaited their fate in front of a live studio audience. Captivated viewers from across the country voted for their favorite contestant and crowned Melissa Marty from Puerto Rico, “Nuestra Belleza Latina” 2008.

In addition to the title, Melissa has won the opportunity of a lifetime with a contract as Univision’s newest on-air personality as well as $200,000 in cash and prizes. This season’s sponsors, which include AT&T, JCPenney, Garnier Fructis, Maybelline New York, Sony and State Farm, are also providing the winner of “Nuestra Belleza Latina” with an array of cash and prizes.

Melissa Marty is a versatile kickboxing, aerobics and ballet instructor and a former “Miss Caguas.” A college graduate with a degree in communications, she was a host for a local television show where she developed her presentation skills and broadened her knowledge of the broadcast industry.

“We would like to congratulate Melissa Marty on this great achievement and acknowledge all the contestants for their hard work and perseverance throughout the competition,” said Alina Falcón, executive vice president and operating manager for the Univision Network. “We are thrilled to have an incredibly successful second season of ‘Nuestra Belleza Latina’ which is due in no small part to the viewer participation in this competition. We would also like to give a special thanks to our sponsors who were an integral part of making this show such a success.”

Of the many women who auditioned throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, only 12 finalists representing the most charismatic, intelligent and captivating Hispanic women were selected to compete. Each week, they faced-off in a fierce competition that tested their character and determination. After a series of eliminations 6 finalists made it to the grand finale: Melissa Marty – the winner, Emeraude Toubia, Mexican/Lebanese from Brownsville, TX – first-runner up; Dayamí Padrón, Cuban from Miami, FL – second runner-up; Zoila Ceballos, Dominican from New York, NY – third place; Leticia Castro, Mexican from Las Vegas, NV – fourth place; and Manuela Arbeláez, Colombian from West New York, NJ in fifth place.

Univision.com also provided online voting and an insider’s look at the lives of the contestants, with exclusive interviews, videos, and an interactive game.”*

“Vidshadow, Inc. (Pink Sheets:VSDW) (www.Vidshadow.com), one of the Web’s fastest-growing online video networks, today announced an agreement with Mexican national icon and five-time boxing world champion Julio César Chávez, to syndicate content and other programming across the Vidshadow network as well as their online video portal – www.vidshadow.tv. Content will include fight clips, interviews and exclusive documentary footage recorded throughout the retired professional boxer’s prolific 22-year career. Additionally, Chavez’s official website – www.juliocesarchavez.net – has embedded Vidshadow’s new media player to broadcast rare, behind-the-scenes footage of the boxer for his vast audience of fans.

“Julio César Chávez is a national hero to the entire country of Mexico,” said Vidshadow CEO Jordan D. Hudgens. “The Julio César Chávez organization sees the potential of reaching millions of online viewers through the JulioCesarChavez.net website, and because of this partnership, we are now actively extending our efforts in order to reach the fast-growing US Latino online market, particularly among Mexicans – the largest national origin group living in the US.”

There were 15.7 million Hispanic Internet users in the US in 2005, according to eMarketer. This total rose to 16.7 million in 2006. Increasing at a rate of 25%, nearly 21 million Latinos will be online by 2010. This means that by 2010 the number of Hispanic Internet users will approach the number of African-American users, making Latinos the fastest-growing minority group in the US to adopt internet use. According to a Pew Study, second generation Latinos or acculturated Latinos adopt internet use even faster.

Julio commented, “I am very excited by this development. I always wanted a website so that all the fans who honored me with their support for so many years could watch my greatest fights and follow my sons. Thanks to Vidshadow, they can watch different videos all the time. I am glad they are our partner.”

“Younger generations of US Latinos as well as second-generation Latinos coming of age currently in the US have not been exposed to some of professional boxing’s true legends,” said Brian Weymouth, President of Julio César Chávez Enterprises. “With an all-time winning streak of 90-0, Julio César Chávez is indeed one of those legends that will inspire Mexicans and all Latinos in the US and abroad. And now, thanks to Vidshadow, his millions of fans worldwide can relive his most triumphant moments in the ring again and again, even as they follow the budding careers of his sons, Julio, Jr. and Omar. La leyenda sigue – the Legend continues!”

Why Vidshadow? Vidshadow.tv possesses best-in-class technology and content, giving it a competitive advantage over other players in the digital distribution space.

This deal comes on the heels of Vidshadow’s recent partnership announcements with National Lampoon, FullTurn media and Planet X.

“The term, I admit, resists translation, but it kept running through my mind the other evening at The Home Depot Center. Cinco de Hoya.

It wasn’t a fight as much as it was a festival, with the Hispanic community, plus assorted others, gathering to express an appreciation for what Oscar De La Hoya has meant to it with his skills and with his dignity. I want to emphasize that word dignity. De La Hoya possesses it. Few in boxing do. Where is the sport going to be without him? Nowhere, I suspect.”*

“Boxing ain’t baseball. Budweiser and Everlast notwithstanding, brands have generally been wary about associating with a sport with poor reputation among the general market, and questionable promotional value because of bad fights and meaningless titles.

They may be changing. With the booming interest in the fight game among Hispanic consumers, and with the first Mexican-American-run fight promotion company founded by a star who transcends the sport, at least one brand–Cerveza Tecate, imported by Heineken USA–is boosting its presence in boxing.”*
