Police officer in North Carolina charged with extorting money from Hispanics

“An officer in the Washington Police Department was charged Tuesday with violating the civil rights of Hispanics by extorting money from them during traffic stops.

Officer Steven Ray Hilsinger was charged Tuesday in federal court on a criminal complaint that says there’s “probable cause to believe that he targeted Hispanics for the purpose of robbing them of money,” the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said.”

“For some immigrants in the Lowcountry, the toughest thing to get used to is the food that comes with butter beans and gravy or with a side of fries and a milkshake.

Besides the obvious language barrier for the region’s growing Hispanic population, one of the biggest challenges for some immigrants is the food barrier — that is, swapping a traditional cuisine for the heavy, buttery or sweet dishes of the South.”

“The trial last week of people charged in the murder of a Hispanic man was a reflection of the changing face of Beaufort County — and it was an embarrassment. According to Spanish-speaking people who were present in the court, some of the translations were inaccurate.

While English is the mother language, the numbers of people who have moved here from elsewhere show the need for adequate translators and interpreters in all facets of life, especially the courts, where life-and-death situations and freedoms often intersect.”

HILTON HEAD ISLAND — Fed up with the federal government’s inability to stop illegal immigration, Beaufort County Councilwoman Starletta Hairston wants the county to ask Washington to pay for the higher costs resulting from undocumented residents living and working here.
