"Fox Sports en Espanol and the Lakers Youth Foundation partnered with Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) for the 5th Annual HOLA BOWLA Charity Bowling fundraiser this past Saturday. Over 150 people attended to partake in the bowling bonanza, with special celebrity appearances by Los Angeles Lakers players Trevor Ariza, Didier Ilunga-Mbenga and Shannon Brown. The talented players joined the Los Angeles Lakers Girls and Chivas USA soccer players Gerson Mayen and Lance Parker to support fundraising efforts benefiting the inner city youth league of the Central City Athletic Association (CCAA), co-founded by HOLA.

"Fox Sports en Espanol is proud to unite with HOLA and the Lakers Foundation to further support the initiatives of the CCAA, and provide our youth with the opportunity to engage in sports as a vehicle to empower their lives," stated Raul de Quesada, Assistant General Manager and Senior Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and Creative Services for Fox Sports en Espanol and Fox Soccer Channel.

The event raised over $42,000, which will benefit the league to continue serving 2,300 young athletes by investing in team uniforms, equipment, facility fees and operating expenses. The evening of sports stardom was most enjoyed by the lucky grand prize winners, who took with them a myriad of celebrity memorabilia and gifts including; LA Lakers autographed hats, basketballs and t-shirts and Chivas USA package including 4 club seats to opening day and an exclusive behind-the-scenes pass to watch the team warm up. Thanks to the support of other organizations, additional prizes included a Fred Segal shopping spree, a VIP Dr. Phil memorabilia package plus show tickets and Chaya Brasserie and Chaya Venice dining certificates.

NBA announces Noche Latina 2009

"On February 24, the NBA announced the launch of its third annual Noche Latina event, a program that recognizes the NBA's fans and players from across Latin America and U.S. Hispanic communities. Noche Latina will take place in eight of the top 10 U.S. Hispanic markets this season (up from four in 2007-08): Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, Chicago, Houston and New York.

"The NBA has one of the largest and fastest-growing Hispanic fan bases in U.S. professional sports, and we want to continue building their interest in the game through participation, programming and events," said Saskia Sorrosa, Sr. Director of Marketing for the NBA. "This initiative celebrates the NBA's unique and dynamic fan base with a focus on our Spanish-speaking communities."

Noche Latina, first launched during the 2006-07 season, will feature celebratory uniforms developed in conjunction with La Agencia de Orci & Asociados, a U.S. Hispanic agency, to display the team name as spoken by the Latino population. Rather than translating the team names literally, market research concluded that Spanish-speakers in the U.S. refer to them differently. The Miami Heat, for example, is called "El Heat"; the San Antonio Spurs are "Los Spurs." Noche Latina uniforms were carefully selected based on the uniforms that had the most affinity within the Hispanic population.

Starting February 21, the NBA will hold local events in each participating city leading up to Noche Latina, including visits by streetball teams to Hispanic events and neighborhoods where they will perform basketball tricks and distribute branded giveaways. To further honor Latino fans and players during Noche Latina games, participating Noche Latina NBA teams will host in-arena themed activities ranging from Latin music to performances and giveaways. Noche Latina 2009 tips off on Tuesday, March 3, when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Memphis Grizzlies. On Wednesday, March 4, the Noche Latina doubleheader opens with the San Antonio Spurs heading to Dallas, where both teams will wear Noche Latina uniforms, followed by the New York Knicks visiting the Atlanta Hawks.

Noche Latina continues with two Miami Heat home games, the first against the Chicago Bulls on Monday, March 9, and the second against the Utah Jazz on Saturday, March 14. On the same Saturday, the Phoenix Suns will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder at home. The Spurs face the NBA champion Boston Celtics on Friday, March 20, followed by Noche Latina games on back-to-back nights, Wednesday, March 25, with the Mavericks vs. the Golden State Warriors and Thursday, March 26, with the Bulls vs. the Heat. The program concludes on Saturday, March 28, when the Houston Rockets host the Los Angeles Lakers."

Former Wichita State star Jason Perez knows not many Hispanics make it in big-time college basketball. He knows because his hometown newspaper once did a story documenting the numbers.

Comcast Expands Spanish-Language Coverage of the 2008 Democratic National Convention

The historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium was filled with stars from both the sports and entertainment worlds as the first-ever annual "Tecate Premios Deportes" (Tecate Sports Awards) honoring Hispanic athletes in nine different categories was broadcast last night by Univision, the most-watched Spanish-language television network in America.

Selected for their character, talent and perseverance, as well as their contributions to and impact on the Hispanic community, the "Tecate Premios Deportes" awards featured not only some of the biggest names in sports, but also performances by some of today's biggest Latin music stars, as well.

Among those honored in the various categories were Oscar de la Hoya (Golden Eagle Award), Miguel Cotto (Boxer of the Year), Lorena Ochoa (Female Athlete of the Year), Carmelo Anthony (Basketball Player of the Year), Helio Castroneves (Auto Racer of the Year), Alex Rodriguez (Baseball Player of the Year), Mexican soccer great Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Athlete of the Year, North American Soccer Player of the Year), and Fernando Valenzuela (Sports Legend), to name a few.
