Hispanics play an important role in the world missions strategy of Southern Baptists in South America, Jerry Rankin, president of the International Mission Board, told more than 100 pastors and leaders at a June 9 luncheon prior to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Indianapolis.

“I feel very much at home with people who speak Spanish,” said Rankin, who recently returned from a two-week trip into the Amazon basin of Peru and Ecuador.

Noting his concern about the “remaining lostness of our world and the urgency of reaching [the lost] with the Gospel,” Rankin urged the audience not to shy away from the Great Commission.”*

Borrego decided to run for another term “after praying to seek God’s direction in my life and in the life of our Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas,” he said. He also considered the encouragement of “so many calls and e-mails from a lot of people” who asked him to continue, he added.

If re-elected, he will focus on strengthening the convention, which is the Hispanic affiliate of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, he said.”*

“Live Oak Baptist Church focuses on family. And in recent years, the family has expanded.

About three years ago, a group of Hispanics in the area joined several people at Live Oak Baptist Church and proposed to start a new Hispanic church. After meeting on their own for a few months, they were led to a 71-year-old retired pastor, Ruben Rios. He quickly joined in their vision and became the pastor of the new Hispanic congregation, now called Iglesia Hispana.

Rios led Bible studies nearly every night, teaching and praying with the group. The group grew so large during the next year, the church moved into the old sanctuary of Live Oak Baptist Church.”

“Hispanic Texas Baptists gathered at Primera Iglesia Bautista of Austin to worship and celebrate the theme of this year’s Baptist General Convention of Texas annual meeting, “One Family–One Mission.”

Alcides Guajardo, president of the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas, introduced BGCT President Albert Reyes, the convention’s first non-Anglo president, and First Vice President Michael Bell to the crowd. Bell was elected BGCT president the next day, becoming the first African-American to hold the post.”
