Lourdes Almeida, an accomplished photographer from Mexico City, captured the image depicting generations of heritage from the very old to the very young. Almeida’s work has been featured in more than 100 solo and 300 collective exhibitions around the world.

“Today we are celebrating Mexico’s rich history and culture, and at the heart of both are our people,” said Emiliano Escobedo, Marketing Director, Avocados from Mexico. “We felt there was no better way to honor Mexico’s history and commemorate the Bicentennial in Los Angeles than through the actual faces of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans representing our Latino community.”

The photograph was taken on Plaza Olvera, located within the El Pueblo Historic Monument in Los Angeles. Founded in September 1781, it is known as the birthplace of the City of Los Angeles. El Pueblo Historic Monument celebrates Mexican culture and diversity, and reflects the historical significance of the Bicentennial. Following the photo, participants celebrated with a Mariachi band and birthday cake, and were each given avocados from Mexico.

“It was very exciting to share my birthday amongst my raza with this historical photograph celebrating México's Bicentennial,” said Cristina Gonzalez, a participant from Menifee, California. “Our traditions and culture are very important to me, as is my birthplace in East Los Angeles, so this day will hold a special place in my heart.”

The photo will be unveiled tonight at the Los Angeles Mexican Consulate. There are plans to donate reprints to cultural institutions and local organizations to provide the community with a historical account of the Bicentennial in Los Angeles.
