In California, Geraldine Bazan participated in the Binational Encounter Mexico-USA where she was a moderator for the theme “Music through traditions and the importance of immigrants.” In Miami and Colombia, Geraldine has found a home and sensational companions. Here the diversity of nationalities allows her to expand her culture and all the places that she has visited. Now that she is spending more time outside of her country, she has gotten to know the people where she lives and she really feels at home. Her mother Rosalba Ortiz and her brother the actor Angel Claude, often visit her in Miami and Bogota during filming of the soap operas.

Y Tu Thespian También - Three successful actors discuss the long road up.
“A hugely diverse range of Latino talent works in Hollywood today. Take the trio of actors who participated in Back Stage’s Latino Report roundtable. Oscar Nuñez is probably best known for his sly comedic performance as beleaguered accountant Oscar Martinez on NBC’s The Office. He has also appeared on Reno 911! and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and he recently executive-produced and starred in the Comedy Central series Halfway Home. Earlier this year, he won a Daytime Emmy for his work in a series of Office webisodes. Nadine Velazquez, meanwhile, has earned critical acclaim and been nominated for two Alma Awards (presented by the National Council of La Raza, a Latino advocacy group) for playing sultry, sharp-tongued Catalina on My Name Is Earl. She has also appeared on Entourage and The Bold and the Beautiful and was recently featured in the film War. And with more than three decades of experience in the business, Lupe Ontiveros is the beloved veteran of the group. The actor has been featured in indie favorites such as Chuck & Buck and Real Women Have Curves, as well as mainstream fare such as As Good as It Gets and Desperate Housewives, which earned her an Emmy nod. These days, she’s moving into producing: the upcoming feature Universal Signs.
These three respected performers have very diverse backgrounds and résumés, but all are passionate when it comes to the various issues facing Latino actors who are trying to make their way in the entertainment industry. Recently, they sat down with Back Stage to discuss inspirations, stereotypes, and community.”
Promoting La Cultura Hispana at Arizona State University
“ASU’s Hispanic Research Center advances the arts and works to produce homegrown talent in the STEM fields.
Launched in 1985 at Arizona State University, the Hispanic Research Center’s efforts to promote Latino and Chicano art and issues have flourished in recent years. In 2004, the HRC hosted the Arizona International Latina/o Arts Festival in collaboration with the Mesa Southwest Museum. “The Dreamer,” an exhibition piece by artist and film set designer Patssi Valdez, created quite a stir in the art world and was most recently featured as a key backdrop for the 2007 ALMA Awards.”
“The all-star line up of todays hottest stars from the worlds of film, television and music continues to shine brighter with the announcements that multi-platinum performer Beyonce Knowles will perform and George Lopez and Los Lobos will be honored on “The 2007 ALMA Awards,” to be telecast TUESDAY, JUNE 5 9:00-11:00 p.m., ET, on the ABC Television Network.”
Brides-to-be Salma and Eva glow at Hispanic artist event
“She recently ventured out in a t-shirt saying Stylish, Sexy, Pregnant” and Salma Hayek certainly lived up to her glamorous reputation as she attended the ALMA awards in California last Friday. The radiant actress, whose baby is due this summer, was at the bash - which honours achievements by Hispanic artists - to pick up the outstanding television series gong for her hit show Ugly Betty. All in all the programme won four awards, including best actress for its star America Ferrera, and best supporting actress for her on-screen sibling Ana Ortiz.”
Alma awards returns with film nominees
“The Alma Awards, which began in 1995 as the Bravo Awards, may not have the cachet or name recognition of the NAACP Image or GLAAD Awards, but their purpose is just as important: to celebrate the achievements and concerns of a minority group in the media, in this case American Latinos.
Sponsored by the National Council of La Raza, the Almas salute achievement in film, television and music. But because the awards concentrate on American Latinos and their achievement in mainstream media, Almas are not handed out in all categories each year. The films must be English-language works, either by American Latinos or with subject matter of interest to American Latinos. No film was nominated for outstanding motion picture last year, for example.”
Eva Longoria Dances for the ALMA Awards - Tuesday, June 5, at 9 p.m. on ABC
“”Desperate Housewives” star EVA LONGORIA will be putting on her dancing shoes for “The 2007 Alma Awards,” airing Tuesday, June 5, at 9 p.m. on ABC. Eva, who is also the host and executive producer of the awards show, will partner with her co-host MARIO LOPEZ for a number with the “Dancing with the Stars” professional dancers KARINA SMIRNOFF, MAKSIM CHMERKOVSKIY and CHERYL BURKE.”
