The historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium was filled with stars from both the sports and entertainment worlds as the first-ever annual “Tecate Premios Deportes” (Tecate Sports Awards) honoring Hispanic athletes in nine different categories was broadcast last night by Univision, the most-watched Spanish-language television network in America.

Selected for their character, talent and perseverance, as well as their contributions to and impact on the Hispanic community, the “Tecate Premios Deportes” awards featured not only some of the biggest names in sports, but also performances by some of today’s biggest Latin music stars, as well.

The show itself proved to be as big as the stars it was honoring as the celebrity-filled audience was entertained by musical performances by such Latin music superstars as regional Mexican group Banda El Recodo, red-hot reggaeton crooner Flex, Mexican singer/actress Paty Manterola, Puerto Rican merengue great Elvis Crespo, duranguense singer Diana Reyes, and urban recording artists A.B. Quintanilla and the Kumbia All Starz.

The judging criteria for the awards included the athletes’ statistical excellence, participation in a televised professional sport in the United States during 2007, cumulative impact on their team and in the sport, and their reputation as a role model for the Hispanic community.

The Yankee Stadium Latinos remember

“After this baseball season, the arena that we know as Yankee Stadium, the one that has been an icon in New York City and the world, will no longer house the Bronx Bombers.

Since 1923, this town has witnessed record-breaking swings, pitches and catches in that stadium. Some of those legendary moments are especially carved into the memories of Latinos.

Last summer, Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player in major league history to hit 500 home runs. Only two players took fewer games to reach 500: Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth. A-Rod is one of only three players, along with Reggie Martinez Jackson and Darrell Evans, to hit 100 home runs for three different teams.”*

“In commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, LatinoBaseball.com along with sponsor Johnnie Walker, launched an exciting campaign to celebrate the prolific history of Latinos in baseball, including Hispanic Heritage Day at the Ballpark, a national radio campaign with future hall of famer David Concepción, and baseball trivia contests for readers of major national magazines. At six stadiums in major Hispanic regions – New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Houston, and Dallas – Latino players such as Alex Rodriguez, all-star Yankee and this season’s homerun leader; Miguel Cabrera, all-star third baseman of the Florida Marlins; and the Texas Rangers’ Sammy Sosa, currently fifth on the all-time homerun list, were honored for their contributions to baseball. The events drew particular excitement among fans, as they coincided with the approaching heat of the Major League Baseball playoff race.

Hispanic Heritage Day at the Ballpark asked fans over the age of 21 to vote online at LatinoBaseball.com for their favorite local Latino players. The players that received the most votes were then honored in a pre-game ceremony on-field before their hometown crowd as the 2007 Latino Player of the Year. Along with representatives from Johnnie Walker and LatinoBaseball.com, one lucky voter in each market was also given the opportunity to present the prestigious award directly to the player.

“It’s remarkable to see the impact that Latinos continue to have on baseball,” said Ralph Paniagua, President and Founder of LatinoBaseball.com. “We’re so proud to honor these incredible athletes who have not only changed the sport, but inspired millions of fans across the globe.”

The first ceremony took place at the Florida Marlins’ Pro-Player Stadium, followed by events at Texas Rangers Stadium in Arlington, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Houston Astros’ Minute Maid Park, and New York Yankee Stadium. The final award ceremony was held in Chicago at the White Sox’s U.S. Cellular Field.

During each ceremony, Latino baseball legends of the past were honored through a special video presentation displayed on the scoreboard. Many of the stadiums also featured live musical performances throughout the presentation.

Boras said he attempted to notify Yankees general manager Brian Cashman of the decision but couldn’t reach him, so he left a voice mail.”*

Zoot Suit Riots
Friday, October 12 at 12 noon, William G. McGowan Theater
In August 1942 the murder of a young Mexican-American man ignited a
firestorm in Los Angeles, California. In no time at all, ethnic and racial
tensions that had been building up over the years boiled over. Police
fanned out across the city in a dragnet that netted 600 Mexican Americans.
Among those accused of murder was a young “zoot-suiter” named Hank Leyvas
– the poster boy for an entire generation of rebellious Mexican kids who
refused to play by the old rules. These dramatic events are chronicled in
this 2001 documentary from the PBS series, American Experience. Written,
produced, and directed by Joseph Tovares. (60 minutes.)

Latin American players enrich baseball’s diversity

“A recent study bemoaned the fact that the number of African Americans playing Major League Baseball is slipping, having fallen to 8.4 percent of current players in 2006 after being as high as 19 percent in 1995.

But if the point being made is a drop in the games diversity, its a misleading argument; baseball is currently more colorful and diverse than it has ever been.

Thats because Latin American players have taken the game by storm. This years opening rosters included 217 players from Hispanic countries, more than a quarter of those participating. Throw in American-born players of Latin descent such as Alex Rodriguez, and the number is still higher.”

“The 30-second Pepsi commercial that aired last summer captured the changing mug of the nation’s pastime. Here you had Alex Rodriguez and Vladimir Guerrero — celebrated products of the Dominican Republic (though A-Rod grew up comfortably in South Florida) — in a whimsical home run derby, pitching the popular soft drink.

Before that, it was slugger Sammy Sosa flashing his effervescent smile for everything from Pepsi to Fila to Kmart. Mariano Rivera promoting Nike. Pedro Martinez pitching a McDonald’s lobster roll across New England. Ozzie Guillen doing the same for Subway in Chicago. Francisco Rodriguez selling Pepsi in Southern California and to countrymen in Venezuela. And let’s not forget Viagra pitchman Rafael Palmeiro.”

A-Rod won the award for the second time in three seasons in a vote that rewarded an all-around player over a designated hitter. In his second season as the New York Yankees’ third baseman, Rodriguez received 16 first-place votes, 11 seconds and one third for 331 points from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.”

“Introduction of the “Latino Legends Team” before Game 4 of the World Series last night was met with harsh criticism from Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen – but not because he wasn’t on it.

Guillen took exception to the entire infield – first baseman Albert Pujols, second baseman Rod Carew, shortstop Alex Rodriguez and third baseman Edgar Martinez – selected by a vote of baseball fans.”
