Already a respected small businessman in the city of Hondo, Pete Pedroza first got involved in local politics because of flooding on the west side of town. Pedroza, the first Hispanic mayor of Hondo, died Friday of complications from diabetes. He was 91.

In late April, Alfredo Santos will publish his reference book, The 2009 Austin Hispanic Almanac, which will offer what he says is the first historical, statistical portrait of Austin’s Latino business and civic community as it’s evolved from the early 1900s to its status today as the city’s fastest-growing demographic component.

The career of Father Vicente Peña spanned time and distance from the Spanish Civil War to St. Ann’s Catholic Church in San Antonio. – Peña, in his 73rd year of the priesthood, died Thursday of natural causes. He was 96.

l Paso native Gilbert Solarzano didn’t set out to be a TV news cameraman. It just kind of worked out that way. Now Solarzano has a ringside seat at Tuesday’s inaugural festivities. He’ll be the guy behind NBC’s camera on the north lawn of the White House, where he’s worked for the past six years.

The day after the Ruiz family was welcomed into their dream home, courtesy of ABC’s “Extreme Make over: Home Edition,” their excitement was still strong but tempered by personal tragedy. While the Ruiz family was on an all-expenses-paid vacation to the Bahamas, courtesy of the TV show, Jesus Ruiz Sr.’s mother died in Juárez.
