Joining President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team – Mario Molina, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UCSD, will help spearhead a group looking at the nation’s science and technology policies. Molina won the 1995 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research examining the threat posed by chlorofluorocarbon gases, or CFCs, to the Earth’s ozone layer.

How did Olga Diaz manage to beat a two-term incumbent and become the first self-described Latino council member in the 120-year history of Escondido? She swept the middle. Unofficial election results show that Diaz not only beat Ed Gallo, whom she will replace on the council, in all 25 precincts in central Escondido, but also had more votes there than Sam Abed, who finished first and won re-election. – California
