How did Olga Diaz manage to beat a two-term incumbent and become the first self-described Latino council member in the 120-year history of Escondido? She swept the middle. Unofficial election results show that Diaz not only beat Ed Gallo, whom she will replace on the council, in all 25 precincts in central Escondido, but also had more votes there than Sam Abed, who finished first and won re-election. – California
