Few immigrants but hot debate before West Virginia primary today

"Here in tiny Bruceton Mills — one of the least Hispanic towns in the union's least Hispanic state, which hosts a Democratic primary today — the subject of illegal immigration has become a hot topic.

"It's a terrible problem," said James Britton, who owns Things 'n Stuff, a combo restaurant-gift shop-hardware store in Bruceton Mills, which according to the U.S. Census has no Hispanic residents.

Britton, a Republican, remains a big fan of Fred Thompson and his anti-immigration sentiments. This fall, he said, he'll reluctantly vote for John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, whose support for legalization of illegal immigrants rankles many locals."

Labor to state: Get tougher on illegal workers – West Virginia

"Even as the state increases the number of inspectors working to crack down on undocumented workers, labor groups are calling for West Virginia to stiffen its laws to deal with illegal immigrants in the work force. The state Division of Labor announced last week it added five inspectors who will identify and cite employers who hire undocumented workers, who are typically illegal immigrants or those who are paid under the table by contractors to avoid taxes. "

West Virginia gets first Hispanic 4-H club

"Hispanic children in Berkeley County finally have their own 4-H club. West Virginia University Extension Service recently established Los Amigos 4-H club -- the first Hispanic 4-H club in the state of West Virginia."

"Anywhere in the United States physicians really need to know basic medical Spanish," John Walden, professor and associate dean of the school of medicine, said. Walden said physicians need to be able to ask a patient where they are hurting and get a brief medical history. "
