"David Lucero grew up in Jamaica, Queens, and he was trying to connect with a group of students in a large classroom overflowing with plants and fish tanks at the High School for Environmental Studies on Manhattan’s West Side.

Mr. Lucero, 22, will soon begin a doctoral program in molecular biology and genetics at the University of Vermont. When he spent a day at the high school recently, his prime goal was to encourage other Latino students, as well as black and Asian-American students, to pursue environmental studies in college and as a career.

Three other Vermont seniors also made the trip, on a mission to recruit minority students from New York City to the state university in Burlington, overlooking Lake Champlain. It is not easy to sell 16- and 17-year-olds on the virtues of camping, hiking, ice skating and living in a small city near the Canadian border when they are more familiar with urban culture, like where to transfer from the E train to the A."

"The lawsuit has thrust this rural state with a socialist streak and miles of loamy farmlands into the center of the contentious debate over US-Cuban relations, which more typically simmers in the courtrooms and coffeehouses of exile epicenters like Miami. The economic embargo against Cuba is nearly 50 years old, but from 1999 to 2004 the US government allowed Cuban-Americans to visit an extended web of relatives at least once a year.

In 2004, under pressure from hard-line Cuban exiles who wanted to stem the flow of dollars to Cuba, President Bush limited visits to every three years and to immediate family only, excluding aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Supporters of the lawsuit reflect the complexities of today's debate over Cuba: The American Civil Liberties Union in Massachusetts, Florida, and Vermont and the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York have signed on to support the lawsuit. But the Cuban American National Foundation, a foe of the Cuban government, also praises the effort."

Vermont Public Radio: Farmers worry about federal crackdown on immigrant workforce

"The 2,000 immigrant workers on Vermont dairy farms have always had a risky job. Many of the dairy workers are here illegally, and they can be deported if caught by federal authorities.

But now the farmers who hire them are also worried. Federal officials have vowed to crack down on employers who knowingly hire illegal labor.

VPR's John Dillon has this report:

(Dillon) The milking is over by late morning at the Dodd farm in Sheldon in Franklin County. But there are still cows to be moved and corn to be chopped. All this work takes many hands. And Richard Dodd was two men short after an early morning raid by the U-S Border Patrol."

It’s not the only key piece of info that needs to be clearly understood by everyone on the farm to keep things running smoothly ”” and communication challenges have increased with a more diverse workforce. In Vermont, the need for farmers to understand at least some Spanish has grown dramatically over the past few years as more than 2,000 Latin Americans are now employed in the states dairy industry. Recognizing a communication gap between farmers and migrant workers, the university and the state joined forces to develop the Vermont Dairy Spanish Project with the help of a USDA grant."

"Members of the Burlington-area Hispanic/Latino community gathered Friday evening at the Flynndog for the opening of Primavera 2007, an exhibit featuring Hispanic artists and celebrating the spring spirit. With the exhibit, the fourth showcasing Hispanic art at the Burlington gallery, the community also celebrated the inauguration of the Flynndogs new Espacio Cultural Hispanico. Two women with Hispanic ties introduced the project, which intends to provide a space for cultural exchanges, educational opportunities and language learning"

Illegal workers use fake IDs, Social Security numbers to get Vermont jobs
