Award-winning author M. Padilla’s [www.mikempadilla.com] recent novel, The Girls from the Revolutionary Cantina, is continuing to receive high praise for its insightful and humorous portrayal of a group of Mexican-American women struggling to achieve success in California’s San Fernando Valley.

Latina Book Club calls the novel “funny, poignant, absorbing and hysterical,” and says readers “will laugh, cry and gasp at the shenanigans of these senoritas.”

Booklist, which praises the novel as “compulsively readable,” says, “Padilla’s second outing is a rollicking good ride with plenty of flare and heart."

The novel, published by Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Griffin, has also been featured at Huffington Post and at The Washington Times.

The story centers around Julia Juarez and Ime Benevides, best friends from the barrio who have risen from humble beginnings to brisk, career-oriented lives. Inspired by their good-natured rivalry, Julia and Ime have never let anything come between them.

But then both women fall for Julia’s new coworker Ilario, disrupting their friendship and bringing Julia's career to the brink of disaster. When her girlfriends’ risky scheme complicates her life even more, she must choose between loyalty to her friends and a chance to live the life she’s worked so hard to achieve.

The author says the story was inspired by his memories of Spanish-speaking aunts and cousins: “They brought such life and energy to our household whenever they would visit, and I wanted to capture their spirit in this book.”

M. Padilla [www.mikempadilla.com] is a winner of the Chicano/Latino Literary Prize and a California Artist Fellowship. The author lives in Los Angeles, California.

The Hispanic brand Tanner Gonzalez [http://www.tannergonzalez.com] announced today the Rising Star Collection. The collection is influenced by the Aztec god Quezacotl who represented a period of new existence for the Aztecs and features men's and women's clothing and accessories. The collection revives Gold as a bold fashion statement in conjunction with the Rising Star. Tanner Gonzalez will be hosting a launch party in Denver, Colorado on October 15th to showcase the Rising Star Collection and mark the close of Latino Heritage Month. [http://www.preservationnation.org/issues/diversity/latino-heritage-in-preservation/]

“Rising Star represents a lot to me.” Describes Gregory Tanner Founder and Creator, “First it's the new period representation for Hispanic Influence. Second it's a step away from the typical look of Hispanic Brands. I used Gold as an influence and I keep the namesake prominent but we have a strong crossover into mainstream consumers even though we are focused on Hispanic buyers. But, make no mistake we still want to be edgy and we want to draw attention - you will see that in the collection.”

Rising Star will host a pre-sale starting October 8th at Noon. Visit http://www.tannergonzalez.com

Confronted with a nursing shortage and healthcare disparities, Hispanic nurses from around the country will meet in Washington, DC for the National Association of Hispanic Nurses NAHN 35th Annual Conference. In the 37 years history of the organization, this is the first time NAHN will take its members, who represent 50,000 Hispanic nurses, to Capitol Hill to meet with Senators and House Representatives. The nurses and nursing students will advocate for legislation that eliminates the health and health education disparities among Latinos. Hispanics face considerable cultural, language, political, and financial barriers in regard to their health. So, quite rightly, the theme of the 35th conference is Transforming Policy to Support Healthy Communities for Latinos. “It is our responsibility to ensure that the Hispanic community not only knows about the new Health Care Reform bill, but also understands the changes that will occur because of it. We need to keep our communities informed of the resources that will be available to them,” said Dr. Norma Martinez Rogers, president of NAHN and professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. “Furthermore, we need to become more involved politically, so that Congress and the leadership of the United States knows who we are and the important role we play in our communities.” Keynote speakers include Carmen J. Portillo, PhD, RN, FAAN, a professor of nursing and the Chair of the Department of Community Health Systems at the University of California; Sr. Callista Roy, RN, PhD, FAAN, author, nurse theorist, and professor of nursing at the William F. Connell School of Nursing at Boston College and Barbara Aranda-Naranjo, PhD, RN, FAAN who directs the President’s Global AIDS Program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NAHN is actively involved in issues affecting Hispanic nurses and the health of Hispanic communities on local, state, regional, and national levels. The organization is committed to work towards providing equal access to education, professional and economic opportunities for Hispanic nurses and to improving the health and nursing care for Hispanic consumers. For more information, contact Martita Mestey at mmestey@iweev.com or visit www.thehispanicnurses.org. NAHN founded in 1975, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Hispanic nurses to improve the healthcare of our communities. NAHN has 40 chapters and nearly 1,900 members nationwide.
