Mexico consul urges show of joint respect in Oklahoma

“Increased statewide immigration enforcement has accelerated human rights violations of Mexican nationals, a consul for the Mexican government said Monday in Oklahoma City.

Andres Chao said the U.S. and Mexican governments must work together to address the growing problem of illegal immigration in such a way that benefits both countries and their citizens.

He dismissed the notion that migration to the United States is an attempt by the Mexican government to export its poverty, and said Mexico sorely misses the young workers that cross daily into the United States.”*

‘English only’ bill defends against illegal executive order - Oklahoma

“A proposal to declare that English is the official language of Oklahoma is a defensive measure to protect the state from enforcement of an unconstitutional, extortionary executive order issued by former President Bill Clinton, said the bill’s author.

Executive Order 13166, issued by Clinton in August 2000, orders governmental entities that accept federal funding to “provide meaningful access” to their services to persons who are not proficient in the English language, also referred to as “limited English proficiency” or LEP persons.”*

Speaking ‘El Ingles’ - Another bad law headed for the Oklahoma books - Senate Bill 163

“
Unlike the Hispanics of 1933 Tulsa, those of 2008 have even more obstacles to overcome. Not only do they have the difficulty of adjusting to a new country, they have one law, House Bill 1804, and a pending law, Senate Bill 163, with which to deal.

HB 1804, known as one of the most strict and punitive anti-illegal immigration laws in the country, was the brainchild of Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, and easily passed through the state Legislature and over the governor’s desk.

This wrongheaded and mean-spirited piece of legislation is now followed up with SB 163, which would make English the official language of Oklahoma. Funny, I thought English already was the official language, although I often have my doubts after reading some responses and listening to telephone messages following any column written about 1804. “*

MAS MULTIMEDIA CORPORATION  is very  proud to announce the “Miss Latina Beauty of Oklahoma 2008″ and “Little Miss Latina Beauty of Oklahoma 2008″  Pageants.  Theses are two very attractive events, never seen before in our Latino Community, and of great importance, not only to the contestants, but also to the Hispanic community in our State.

We started about two years ago, in 2006, promoting and featuring the beauty, intelligence and talent of the Latinas living in Oklahoma, by means of our TV Show ESTILO LATINO, broadcasted by the local UNIVISION TV stations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Visit:  www.estilolatino.tv/demo/demo.html

In 2007, after more than a year running the show and the segment, we decided to invite the girls to participate in a Beauty Pageant, which would provide them a wonderful experience that would change their lives forever. With this goal in our minds we invited all the girls that had participated in the segment on TV, and also convoked to an open registration that took place on September 29th and 30th, 2007.

On October 12th, 2007 all the girls who registered had the opportunity to meet the judges and introduce themselves, and since that moment, they have been practicing their talents, learning about modeling in our modeling school, and getting ready for the Pageant that we decided to run close to the “NUESTRA BELLEZA LATINA 2008″, a Reality Show and Pageant organized and broadcasted nationwide by UNIVISION network in Miami, Florida.

Little Miss Latina Beauty  Pageant took place on Saturday, March 29th, at the  Kerr Mac Gee Auditorium at OCU, located on 2501 North Blackwelder Avenue, OKC.

Some illegal immigrants in Oklahoma feel heat from new laws

“Stronger state laws against them are making some illegal immigrants leave one area city behind. One area young man is fighting the pressure he feels to leave what he considers his hometown.

For ‘Jose,’ there is no place like the Oklahoma panhandle. This is home for me because I have never been back, he says. Never been back to Mexico since his parents brought him to the U.S. illegally when he was five. After Oklahoma enacted laws that punish employers who hire undocumented people, his family considered returning to Mexico.”*

Does immigration law unfairly affect state students? - Oklahoma

“Oklahoma’s immigration law unfairly punishes some of the state’s greatest assets: young people with the ability and desire to gain a college education, a University of Houston law professor said Tuesday.

The law that went into effect Nov. 1 makes it harder for illegal immigrants to qualify for in-state college tuition and bars them from state scholarships.

Michael Olivas said that is unfair because it targets the children of parents who brought them here illegally. Some teens do not know they are illegal until they are asked for proof of residency when they apply to college.”*

Hispanic student enrollment declines - Tulsa, Oklahoma

Hispanic student enrollment is down slightly for many area school districts since portions of the state’s new immigration law took effect Nov. 1, officials report.

For years, Tulsa Public Schools has seen its Hispanic student enrollment grow steadily after the first day of school. But the trend reversed in 2007-08, with enrollment in that category falling 257 students. “*

Oklahoma’s crackdown on illegal immigration draws Texas lawmakers’ interest

Filed under [ Hispanic News ] [ Immigration ] [ Politics ] [ Top Stories ] [ Oklahoma ] [ Texas ]
“Welcome to the nation’s laboratory for a crackdown on illegal immigration. Last year, Oklahoma’s Legislature passed, by huge margins, the nation’s toughest law on illegal immigrants, making it a felony to harbor, transport, shelter or conceal undocumented immigrants.

This summer, the same law also will allow U.S. citizens to sue employers if they think they were fired in favor of illegal workers. Employers in the state say they already see the results: “A total lack of workers,” said Doug Forrest, a Tulsa site-preparation contractor and golf course builder. “This is potentially sending our state into a recession.”"*

Was it because his brother was a top officer in El Salvador’s army battling the guerillas? Was it because Daniel had been a successful businessman, or because he was an evangelical Christian leader in the civil war-torn nation?

Now, 27 years later, Caceres (pronounced “Ka-se-res”) says he doesn’t care or want to know why he was targeted.”*

Where have the immigrants gone? - Oklahoma law targeting illegal workers had some unforeseen results

The branches are still here, many of the law’s critics say, because the undocumented workers who would have cleaned them up are not.”*
