Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32) and Dolores Huerta, Co-Founder of the United Farm Workers, joined Senator Hillary Clinton in Las Vegas yesterday to kick-off the “Juntos Con Hillary, Una Vida Mejor” (Together with Hillary, A Better Life) tour of Nevada. Solis and Huerta will continue their outreach efforts to Latino voters in Nevada today, particularly Latinas.
“I’m proud to join Dolores in campaigning for Senator Clinton. Our community needs Hillary because she has the strength and experience to deliver change on day one in the Oval Office,” said Solis. “She has always stood for America’s children and families and her record on the issues that matter most to the Latino community – education, health care, and the economy – is unmatched by any other candidate.”
After the kick-off event at the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 88 training center, Solis and Huerta walked precincts together and encouraged Latino voters to caucus for Clinton on January 19th. Today they will meet with precinct captains, attend local church services, and visit with Latino business owners. One of four residents in Nevada is of Hispanic or Latino descent.
Huerta led the kick-off crowd in chanting “Si se puede” (Yes, we can), the famous phrase she and Cesar Chavez coined. “Throughout her life Hillary has been a strong leader, working for issues that make a difference in every family’s life,” said Huerta. “She is the best qualified candidate and the one that’s ready to put our country back on track. The tremendous response she has received in Los Angeles and Nevada is a testament to the large support she has in the Latino community.”
Solis and Huerta have stumped extensively for Clinton in California, Nevada and elsewhere around the country. Solis, the first Latina appointed to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the first woman to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, serves as Co-Chair of the campaign’s Environmental and Energy Task Force and Co-Chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Council. Huerta, a renowned human rights activist, is Co-Chair of the campaign’s Hispanic Outreach.
